Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

Isang Yun  Gasa (1963) for Violin & Piano   Favoriting Compositions of Isang Yun-8 (Akiko Tatsumi and Yuji Takahashi)  Camerata  1990  15 June 1983, Hadano Public Hall. Gasa is a Korean word meaning simply Song—Words and is the name of a Korean narrative art song. It is sung by a woman and is accompanied by a bamboo flute, the Taegum, and an hourglass drum, the Changgo. In Gasa the violin part is modeled on the character of the voice which contrasts such opposite as purity and coarseness, near and far, light and dark. Gasa exists in space. It takes no heed of time—each moment exists in space and that space is unending. Within this (space) however there exists a dramatic development. (Isang Yun) In Gasa Yun combines his central-tone technique with twelve note tone-fields. (Walter-Wolfgang Sparrer, trans. Michael Whiticker)

But there's cheese in there, right? And maple syrup?

Yeah, Nat A. totally underrated. Maybe not in Miles's league conceptually but technically arguably stronger?

Nat's probaly a stronger player than Miles (though Miles's chops varied over his career, he did get them together in some periods).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
DJ Peter:

↳ doctorjazz @7:12
Yeah, agreed on all counts.

Of course the main reason Gregory made that comment is that Nat played the theme (not Cannonball)... which come to think of it...
Avatar 🕰 7:18pm

↳ DJ Peter @7:13
Actually, it wasn't The Theme. I'd been listening to Miles live with the Second Quintet, and the arrangement and style of this just really sounded much like it, though minus Tony Williams. Miles was in great form on the set I heard (live at Newport, I believe).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
DJ Peter:

↳ JazzUpholsterer @7:43
Hey JazzUpholsterer exactly! It's supposedly a Cannonball album but Miles plays the head on "Autumn Leaves" and then takes the whole code/outtro to himself, no sax at all.
I always figured the album was conceived as "Miles Davis presents... Cannonball Adderley" but it isn't titled as such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
DJ Peter:

↳ adamdoesit @7:39
Aha that's it! If it's an LP then there has to be a jacket over the sleeve, but since it's a CD everyone... there's no sleeve... so the band is showing sleeve...
