Bonjour Fred. Yes, I'll leave categories to the music critics and the AI. Yet, there is one place where I like categories, the record store. I get really miffed if I see, say, Dizzy Gillespie in the Freak Folk section. I'll even take LPs that are lost in the wrong section and place them in the proper one. I never tell the person at the cash register because they seem too grumpy; it wouldn't lighten their day at all. No.

I was just starting to get into jazz, early 80s, an older resident in my program was heavily into jazz. He took me to J&R Records, downtown NYC, had me hold my arms out and loaded me up with "essential" albums, Point of Departure was one. Took me a while to "get" it, though.

I've already switched to using mass transit to go to NYC most of the time (except when I'm working in Staten Island, there is no mass transit to there, so if I go to the City after work, I need to drive). I was a bit leery of the Congestion Pricing,, but it already costs a kazillion bucks to drive/park/do something in NYC. But, if they want people to use mass transit, they need to make it more user friendly (looking at you, NJ Transit)

Yeah. And I understand the lack of faith that the $$ from congestion pricing fees will be put to good use by the MTA, but I feel like it's our only hope and the best available option. And as someone who works in NJ alongside many NJ Transit riders, I can confirm that NJ Transit SUCKS.

...this is perhaps, in part, why NJ's gov is so against the congestion pricing plan, as it will reveal to his constituents just how horrible the state's mass transit is. (Also probs because the people with money who drive are against it.)

Not really, Rev. Article IV, Section 2, Clause 1, of the US Constitution reads, "The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States." This includes the right to travel, at least from one state to another.

True-and either the system isn't big enough to accomodate more trains, or not enough are available, but once an hour schedule, last train back to NJ 11 PM is just nuts! Not to mention breakdowns-I've been stranded at the Newark system (had to Uber from there, reaally late home). I've been on trains that had been in the station for 4 hours (fortunately I got on close to the end of the 4 hours, some riders had been there the whole time). I've been told to get off the train for problems, bussed to another train station, then took another train home. There must be something that can be done (but, of course, it would cost money, which governments are loath to spend these days, as it requires more taxes...)

One can wile away a long afternoon reading the notes of the various constitutional conventions. You think politics are divisive today?!

Today's right-wing originalists are notoriously hypocritical. For them, history matters only when it matters. A sad thing, or maybe a good thing, is that I don't acquire albums (whatever format) anymore largely because I can't deal with absorbing them properly. If I sit down to listen to an album in my classic music appreciation mode, I will be asleep with 12 minutes. It's hopeless. But unlike, apparently most (?) aging people, I DON'T want to hear the stuff I've already heard. So mostly I have 'FMU streaming things I haven't heard. The falling asleep part I hope doesn't portend anything; but the "too much to absorb" part I get, and that's why WFMU is so great!

I've been thinking a lot about "attention" and how much we can give; and whether younger people need to re-learn how to pay attention...

But also thinking a lot about the new book "Why we Remember" that makes the point: remembering is the weird part, not forgetting. Our memories were not designed to remember the name of that guy who you met at the thing last week. We can't hold onto all of it. So I think it follows that we can't appreciate new music the way we did when we were younger and sponging it all up.

I definitely don't have the focus for new music/records I had when I was younger (though I still want to hear new stuff more than replay older stuff). It's partly the age of staring at your phone/computer (probably partly just age, but don't tell anyone). But it's also a function of being able to buy stuff I hear more easily than when I didn't have much disposable income. It's easier to absorb 1-2 albums every 1-2 months, than it is to absorb much higher volumes of incoming music. (I also think the old way of listening to LPs, one side at a time, made it easier to absorb the music than the current CD/download way of having 60 minutes, more or less, of music to absorb in 1 listen).
