July 7, 2024: Hank Mobley, Joe Zawinul, and a Chilling Tale
Georgia-born, Jersey-raised tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley started with Max Roach, recorded a mess of warm and cool Blue Note leader sessions and played with the usual cast of greats over a sadly foreshortened career. We'll just wet our toes briefly in the tide, as we will with the massively prolific Joe Zawinul, Vienna-born pianist, composer, Miles and Cannonball veteran, and co-founder of Weather Report. Plus a story to cool your cockles in this July heat wave.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
' Henry Mobley (July 7, 1930 – May 30, 1986) was an American tenor saxophonist and composer. Mobley was described by Leonard Feather as the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone", a metaphor used to describe his tone, that was neither as aggressive as John Coltrane nor as mellow as Lester Young, and his style that was laid-back, subtle and melodic, especially in contrast with players such as Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. The critic Stacia Proefrock claimed him "one of the most underrated musicians of the bop era." Mobley's compositions include "Double Exposure", "Soul Station", and "Dig Dis" '...

' Josef Erich Zawinul (⫽ˈzɒvɪnəl⫽ ZOV-in-əl; 7 July 1932 – 11 September 2007) was an Austrian jazz and jazz fusion keyboardist and composer. First coming to prominence with saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, Zawinul went on to play with Miles Davis and to become one of the creators of jazz fusion, a musical genre that combined jazz with rock. He co-founded the groups Weather Report and The Zawinul Syndicate. He pioneered the use of electric piano and synthesizer, and was named "Best Electric Keyboardist" twenty-eight times by the readers of DownBeat magazine '...

...as a Beatlenerd, became familiar with his article in Playboy about TheBeatles early on when they got to the USA.
Today being Ringo's B-Day & all.
He was very dismissive. Props maybe for being 'intellectual' enuff to counter the trend - but then he missed what all the Magic about them was. So now I'm agnostic on him...

If the content is 'mundane'. A kind of extraordinary everyman.
It's maybe a bit like the difference between me & Kerouac. He Loved the USA in a way I never can after Nixon & Nam & so on. He's like Prairie Home - but I'd rather have a beer with Jean than Keilor by some measure, manner of speaking...

in any case my brother was by far their favorite and was considered "intellectual" (they, apparently clueless to the person they'd actually spawned!)
so they probably considered it an intellectual pursuit.
-and probably considered what we *might* have been listening to
