Favoriting July 21, 2024: Jelena Ana Milcetic and Conrad Yeatis Clark

A Sunday birthday twin-bill featuring 95-year old singer Helen Merrill from New York, happily still in our mortal midst, a fearless explorer of many musics - and from the Pittsburgh region hard-bop pianist Sonny Clark, sadly whipped off HIS mortal coil at 31. But what a sweet legacy. This show is especially recommended for people who like people named Sonny... and/or Clark ... have a ball countin' 'em up on the playlist!

' Helen Merrill (born Jelena Ana Milcetic; July 21, 1929) is an American jazz vocalist. Her first album, the eponymous 1954 recording Helen Merrill (with Clifford Brown on EmArcy), was an immediate success and associated her with the first generation of bebop jazz musicians. After an active 1950s and 1960s, Merrill spent time recording and touring in Europe and Japan, falling into obscurity in the United States. In the 1980s and 1990s, she was recorded by EmArcy, JVC and Verve, and her performances in America revived her profile. Known for her emotional, sensual vocal performances, she continues to perform today, her career now in its sixth decade of concerts and recordings '...

In New York, Clark was often requested as a sideman by many musicians, partly because of his rhythmic comping. He frequently recorded for Blue Note Records as one of their house musicians, playing as a sideman with many hard bop players '...

Was in Monterey earlier this week, where I dropped into Kurt Heisig Music, a tiny shop on Polk St. downtown. Heisig makes and repairs saxophones and other reed instruments. The shop is lined with photos, many signed, of his customers: Steve Berlin from Los Lobos, Pharoah Sanders, Odean Pope, Prince Lasha... Had an amazing time visiting with him.
