Obscure musical gems, avant experimentation, and classics worth rehearing. A conurbation of Leslie speakers, timbales, plungers, arch-tops, tablas, and squeaky reeds. Black ties, pork pies, Cuban boots, Nudie suits, bobbysocks, turtlenecks, and high-heeled sneakers. Jazz is the north star but it’s a wide universe, so says The Laughing Clock.

How did Wolfe get Paul Gonsalves to play on his album????
Actually, I got Nicole Glover's latest record, and it is quite good. I'm keeping it on rotation in my car. She is playing the saxophone chair in Artemis now.

WR: it does seem that Fleck's rhythmic sensibility melds well with Corea's. Sorry, Aeroc's.

Saw Sorey behind Vijay Iyer at The Village Vanguard, was sitting on his side of the room. I thought he was too busy, had trouble hearing Iyer.

Dean:

I saw Sorey at a house, a small living room, in Berkeley, with Roscoe Mitchell. Something tells me these guys, these masters, prefer the intimate venues.

I've been listening to the recent Iyer/Sorey/Linda May Han Oh record on ECM, and the balance is very good there (*In My Humble Opinion*). Not surprising that Manfred Eicher might turn down the drums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
DJ Peter:

BTW in addition to Hank Mobley & Joe Zawinul (whose birthdays were addressed by Stork), it's also Ringo Starr's 84th birthday. I didn't have time to locate that Benny Goodman record where he does "Octopus's Garden" but now I'm wishing I had searched more.
  8:08pm

For sure, LG, I'd love to hear Tyshawn et al. captured by the inspired Marc Rusch, to my mind the best engineer or our time, or one of them.

I do also recall hearing one ECM record, Charles Lloyd's Fish Out Of Water, on what at the time was a very fine stereo reproduction system, most importantly including the then new Mark Levinson 31, equipped with the 30 transport. Way out of my budget, but gorgeous.
