I looked at a lot of tambourines today since earlier discussion, some 10" some 11" different metals in the um, metal part...was thinking about one with instead of goat skin, a hammered metal top like a steel drum, with a new different tones or notes depending where struck. Pursue it, or abandon?

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's the top of a Gittar that is your prime Resonator. & if it - & /or your fretboard - stretches - your intonation will not work (your notes will be all over the place). To say nothing of the 'action' (pressure to press strings against neck because of distance & string tension). In fact you will not have string tension cause the strings will bend it completely. You might as well make a chair of jello.

I agree rubber is a very unsatisfactory body material, acoustically, but I assume a rubber guitar is asking a different set of questions anyway, so then well what would it take to make one and what properties could it have, would tensioning the rubber in different ways be a useful option... Today on an online scavenger hunt, i learned my library lends 11" tambourines. You may if you choose take that as a sign.

You could make the back & sides of a Gittar out of some stiff rubber to prove some point. But what point I'm not sure. & the top face being a resonator is less relevant for an Electric. But I'd leave it all to the Cartoon Surrealists.

"part of an installation of a series of 'impossible musical instruments': a thirteen-foot-tall drum kit, an absurdly long accordion, an acoustic guitar with a bent neck, and a tuba fused with a trumpet"

Somebody get Iggy Pop, that drum set is just asking for it.

the neck doesnt have to be rubber, I was thinking a through the body neck already. Even the bridge could float independent of the rubber sking (cant say soundboard)

It might help an Electric stay Grounded. But that's mostly in your Strings anyhow. Nylon strings have less tension, btw...

there's an album cover with a guitar on a table and the neck is hanging off the table, as if it's either rubber, or melted
- can't recall...(be bop deluxe?)

rubber will never behave like wood, asking it to would be futile, but asking what it can do is where it all starts

A favorite thing is how they put a steel skeleton in Pianos - those 88 metal Strings produce enormous tension. Before that - Pianos would periodically implode dramatically in polite homes @ 3 A.M. ...

a friend read somewhere of a man that took a sledge hammer to a piano. it broke, folded and killed him.
i'd always wondered about this but if it was an early piano without the metal frame it makes sense.
