Favoriting August 4, 2024: Hello, Herbie

Today’s party is for Texas gih-tar slinger, the fabulous, melodious Herb Ellis, on his 103rd birthday. He covered a lotta ground - in Tommy Dorsey’s band in his early 20's, to accompanying Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and other songbirds; years in Oscar Peterson’s trio with Ray Brown; frequently playing with Ben Webster, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Getz, Gillespie, Eldridge- and with guitarists Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Charlie Byrd, to name three; studio work galore, and a big old discography as a leader.

That makes complete sense, fred. LA is enormous. When I lived on the east side, I was hardly aware of stuff going on elsewhere in the city, e.g., the riots after the Rodney King verdict. I was working downtown that day, caught my bus home and noticed the mostly vacant streets as we proceeded east, away from the fires.

Hi Stork and swells! I’m listening from the Metro North train from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central. Barkeep, toast me up a Glen Passaic Pullman Porter* please!

* Glen Passaic Pullman Porter
2oz Glen Passaic
1 pint best porter or stout
1 loaf white sandwich bread, sliced
butter, softened

Lay bread slices across two sheet pans and bake at 350F until golden brown. Butter thoroughly. Using an inverted pint glass, punch out a circle from each. Pull pint of porter or stout, and set on a plate. Drop bread slice by slice around the pint of porter until level with the rim. Pour shot of Glen Passaic, and drop depth charge style into porter, allowing buttered toast to soak up excess ale. Serve warm (toast), cool (porter), and toxic (Glen Passaic).

Oh, this old thing?

Plush Flambé
2oz Glen Passaic
1 small plush stuffed animal, 3-5in high
Gutta percha
Asbestos glove

With a sharp knife, slit open belly of stuffed animal. After removing enough stuffing, fit shot glass of Glen Passaic inside, and sew belly back up with gutta percha. Set before customer on a fireproof plate, briefly invert, and ignite with a long match. Customer should don asbestos glove and consume flambé before polymers resolidify.

As a youngster, I always misheard the line from Brian Eno's Third Uncle - "burn his books, burn his shoes" - as 'Bugs Bunny shoes'. It was years before I realised my mistake. Those soft shoes on the cover are exactly what I pictured Bugs Bunny shoes as being like.
