A very critical record for me. I'd taped a song from it off the local college station in the 80s, never knew who the band was. Bought the record on the strength of the cover art a few years later and was floored to find the song on it. Been a fan ever since.

Charro!? (Wow)…:
“Jeopardy question”: who was John Charles Patrick Croghan Daly?

I gotta check more of those shows out - along with those old Groucho Marx hosted “you bet your life”.

Oof, I can't help thinking of Kevin Spacey singing this at some benefit for NYC not long after 9/11.

Oh god, that sounds dreadful. I don't talk about this much, but as someone who was A) around the corner from the Dakota on the night Lennon was murdered (I was 8), AND B) a 9/11 first responder who walked through the rubble and devastation in downtown NYC, this offends me on multiple levels.

Weird memory and formative childhood experience, for sure. One of my most vivid memories is seeing the squad car speed past us as my dad yanked me away from the curb. Lennon was slumped against the window in the back seat.

I think it's why I've always had an awkward relationship with the Beatles. The only record we had by them when I was growing up was "Let it Be", and the combo of the eulogistic tone of the title track and the memory of being front and center for Lennon's death set me on an uneasy path with them right out of the gate.

My dad had the White Album and Abbey Road in his collection. When I asked him why, since he wasn't generally a fan of rock music, he said he just wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
