Up to the point where I watched the doc I'd not heard one note of their music.

Afterwards I can say it's not my cup of tea musically, but I found Gira to be a really intelligent guy, super passionate about the music he creates and dedicated strongly to his live performances and also very generous with his time towards his audience. Those things all endear me to him. Much respect.

I read that as "horses" on several continents - but that works, too.

...although if you insist on continuing to torture yourselves with Windows, don't let anybody try to replace those big black computers I built. They should still have enough compute power for newer OSes, and if they don't, the cases are completely standard sizes you can swap new motherboards into. They should last through multiple computer generations.

But really, you need a couple of current-gen Mac Minis in each studio to reduce maintenance nightmares.

Yeah, I've barely touched a Windows or Mac machine in 20 years, so my impulse is to suggest Linux. But people roll their eyes.

And almost none of the mainstream audio software is available in Linux versions. There are useable Linux substitutes for a lot of things, but if you want to use, say Pro Tools™®, y'r outta luck. This isn't Linux's fault; it's the companies like Avid who write software, and don't bother doing Linux versions.

↳ McGroovey @5:11
Yeah. All the main headless servers running infrastructure services for the station are running flavors of Linux.

But for studio DAWs, one of the commercial desktop platforms (macOS or *cough* Windows) is a much better fit, so the accustomed polished commercial applications can run there.

McGroovey:

Sometimes you encounter dumb stuff in Linux. That is, stuff that's a problem for a dumb reason. Like, I've been using the Opera browser for 25+ years. Because of software licensing issues, the current Linux version of Opera doesn't ship (can't ship) with a working version of libffmpeg, which is the extension that lets you watch most embedded videos. So, YouTube doesn't usually work in Opera. So you have to go hunting for bootleg libffmpeg.so files and try them until you find one that works. I haven't found one yet for the current version of Opera I have. No great loss, in this case.

This is the only little dumb mad-making thing I can think of right now. Everything else I need just works on my Linux machine.

The other aggravating thing is that I bought a keyboard controller last winter. It works fine with all the Linux midi software I have, but I can't install the software suite provided with the keyboard, so I can't use all the sounds in the sound library that came with the keyboard (and of course there's no reason for me to buy library extensions for more sounds, because they won't work outside their software suite, which only exists for Linux and Mac machines).

Don't bother McGroovy! It's not a free program and it's geared for studio usage.

I just tried to run it, and it's coughing. It seems like it wants me to change my sound server configuration. I don't want to change my configuration and perhaps mess up the software I do use, just so I can run trial software I probably will never pay for.
