Just going by my addled memory here... When I was kid, novelty records periodically had massive chart success (e.g., The Streak, Mr. Jaws, etc.) , but... the real runaway success happened with Steve Martin's "King Tut."

After that, I think some comedians, who always released LPs of their material, became more focused on the novelty, goofy single geared for chart action.

This is just anecdotal to my own small world at the time!

@Barrie_ from that unimpeachable source, Wikipedia:

The sketch was conceived when SCTV moved to the CBC television network. Due to the difference in the amount of time allocated for commercials, each episode to be broadcast on that network was two minutes longer than those syndicated to the United States. The CBC network heads asked the show's producers to add specifically identifiably Canadian content for those two minutes, in line with government broadcast regulations. Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas thought that this was a ridiculous request, given that the show had been taped in Canada, with a mostly Canadian cast and crew, for two years.[2] The request inspired them to create a parody that would incorporate every aspect of the humorous stereotype of Canadians.[3][4]

From their wiki

"The name was taken from the Magic Theatre referenced in Herman Hesse's novel Steppenwolf, and from Principal Thomas Charles Edwards, a theologian who was the first Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and an ancestor of Lyn Edwards"

Lyn Edwards was in the band.

John Peel has a lot to answer for, neither his business partner Selwood not his radio show producer Walters rated this lot at all. I think it msy've been the 'collective' nature of the group that he wished to foster/support.

But whatever
