I bought a lot of cds a little bit after vinyl really took off cause I thought the same thing would happen to cds but I haven’t really seen that happen. Something about a lot of the cds I have just feels cheaper than vinyl, which is odd to me because my ps1 and dreamcast games which also come in jewel cases don’t have that quality. Maybe it’s just because I know they’re worth more?

Hi Gary and bodegans! I'm enjoying the show. I like CDs, but have never found a satisfactory way to store them along with their album art. Intact or compact, but both?
  7:38pm
wimpy:

Perhaps even more than cassette, cd should be the king for easily mass produced media for local bands, but I think that same cheapness keeps people away. Even though a cassette sounds worse something about it is just cooler to a lot of people.

Dean:

The Music Library at UC Berkeley has two tiny shelves devoted to free CDs, mostly vocal recitals, operas, show tunes, Americana, and the like. They try to cycle new material every so often, and so I drop by every couple weeks or so. I've probably snagged 50 CDs.

Blind Dog is operated by the son-in-law of the late Brian Hartsell, a retired architect who opened a store in San Jose, Analog Room. The store had no signage. Brian presided over a stream of customers, mostly guys, who rifled through his LP offerings and gazed lovingly at his gear, including amplification he had designed himself. Brian always wore a Hawaiian shirt and Bermuda shorts, and almost always chewed on a cigar. He took no guff from anybody, but was an encyclopedia of analog lore.

Before it moved to the Bowery, Downtown Music Gallery was on East 5th St, which is where I first came across it. I was looking for something in Other Music, and the clerk said, "Have you tried the Downtown Music Gallery?" thereby re-directing my disposable income from their store to DMG

A very obvious but maybe pertinent observation about the Japanese is that maybe they don't mess around with whatever they get into. They go deep, thorough & intense. Like they actually give a crap about things. There have variously been moments I thot the Japanese - SciFi, Animation, Rawk - were the only examples of these things that mattered & showed a way forward...

My first visit to Japan was in 1987. I was exited to get some stuff like the Miles Davis or other avante work that was only issued in Japan and the imports in the US were so expensive. I was shocked and disappointed to find that they were just as expensive in Japan. Didn't buy anything, I don't think. Except manga, shipped back by slow boat several boxes of manga.
