The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz was the "textbook" for a great jazz history class I took in college (taught by Chuck Israels, who played bass for Bill Evans, among other things. Though I had no idea he was anything special at the time. He did teach a great class, though, changed my listening).

first step would be to find an audio engineer who specializes in mastering from cassette source haha.. well maybe second, if you count locating the rights-holders, and if you find them they might have access to the masters (but that's not really your question)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm

Dean:

Somewhere along or beyond the spectrum "crass...to...preservation" we'll have to situate scholarship, namely, liner notes. The almost unique example that comes to mind is Graham Johnson's series on Hyperion of the complete Schubert lieder, coupled with an assortment of related works. These appeared from the '80s into the '00s, each with a CD booklet so fat that most wouldn't survive the jewel case. After its completion, Johnson published a book consisting of the compiled booklet texts. So, while not a vinyl release, it is a striking instance of liner note as a medium for scholarship.

Re Wyatt, indeed! -good catch.
As a kid, I hadn’t yet been aware of Wyatt’s legacy career, & it was pretty bizarre finding out that my 1st intro to him was his stunningly emotional cover version take of Chic’s “At Last I Am Free”. Of course, it would be a few years before I would even know that & collect those great Chic albums. Of course, immediately beguiled by Wyatt - perused his entire career as fast as possible… Mind thoroughly Blown = Forever ♾️ 😃.

Oh, shoot, yes, ngh! Thanks for the reminder. I'm also poised to start bidding for Marston Records on eBay. They have a few old issues up for grab$.

Listener Gregory:

@Dean, does it have lyrics? Or is the action of the strings towards the trombones just highly suggestive?

it's played withy a rusty trombone

Listener Gregory:

@tom tom, I came home and found another viola kicking in my stall?
  9:32pm
Dean:

@LG, the latter, I think, as I have to confess that I don't hear Strauss's "van a'rockin'" when I listen. No lyrics, all symphonic instrumental.

Here's the Strauss. Make sure the children leave the room. This will make Cardi B blush.

@dean, there’s an avant-garde feminist composition from a few decades back that features a tape of what is clearly a woman uhhh… experiencing carnal pleasure shall we say. The liner notes describe this as, “this composition features the sounds of a woman’s breathing.” Maybe it could be performed with the Strauss piece.

I'm reminded, LG, of morning FM radio featuring pairs of barely talented DJs who yuck it up while enlisting listeners to call the station in flagrante delicto. It's funny once or twice and then just stupidly exploitative.

Being of the tribe of Andrea Dworkin, whose absence I mourn if not daily, then weekly, I eschew pornography.

What would andrea dworkin think of cardi b...?
  9:56pm
Dean:

I can't speak for her, of course, but I think she would admire her as much as I do. Cardi B is smart, talented, beautiful, brave, and in your face.

I met Dworkin at the late lamented Sisterhood Bookstore in Westwood. One of the happiest days of my life.
