Favoriting The Radio Is Broken with Rich In Washington: Playlist from September 13, 2024 Favoriting

The Radio Is Broken is a three-hour spelunk through the canyons and fissures of humanity's collective unconscious. It sounds as if a field recording of the Culture Industry were a sonic juggernaut barreling down a rickety track—except that tunnel ahead is just painted onto a sheer cliff wall. With occasional forays into what might pass for "normal" music. Prerequisite journey: Cratedigger's Lung

↳ Song: "Emergency 911 Pt.1" by "DJ Zero & Robo"
The backstory to this recording is interesting: DJ Zero was slated to DJ a show on the evening of 9/11/01 and when he called the venue to see if the show was cancelled - it wasn't - but all the other acts bailed. So he called Robo (from Big City Orchestra), who had apparently been glued to his TV and sampling lots of audio (as one does).
This is their set.

Chicago. I actually tried to go to work but we ended up going home anyway. That was during my bad marriage, so going home to hear my creepy husband spout his theories about the situation wasn't too comforting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember where I was working, few people had cell phones, so everyone was glued to a radio in our immediate work place. Someone brought a little portable TV from an office. It was like another time entirely. I think now everyone would be intensely glued to their phones and not even communicating with each other.

I had to go visit my kids because their mom always had the TV on and I just knew they'd be watching it in their house and worrying. I took them out to eat and tried best to explain and tell them they were safe, but EVERYONE out in public was just stunned and strange acting.

WR:

Here's my 9/11 story, or one version of it. I've lived in NYC since 1992. On 9/11 I was in Madison WI for work. I did (and do) installation and training for software that records telephone calls. I had just barely got the system running the night before and was barely prepared for the training session that was to happen that morning. I arrived a bit late and went to the meeting room for the training. No one in there. I went to my contact and asked if we were still scheduled for training. They said, go into the meeting room and turn on the TV. I turned on the TV just in time to see the 2nd tower go down. My Verizon cell phone didn't work for a couple of days.

Hi Rich & Broken Radiots!
My 9/11 story is likely going to be more interesting than everyone else's here. I actually was at the WTC 11 days before the attacks. And it was absolutely by accident, because I meant to take the PATH train line to 6th Ave. & W. 4th St., where I would've stopped at a record shop nearby, stopped over my favorite hot dog place for a nosh, then walk across town to go see a show at the Bowery Ballroom. So since I ended up at the WTC instead, I decided to buy something to eat at the Sbarro's in the ground plaza, then walk acroiss town past City Hall and up East Broadway to the Bowery Ballroom, not even having the slightest hint as to how I could've made such a mistake or the significance of my being there, considering the fate that was awaitiing the Twin Towers.

I caught a bit of "Tetsuo" once on a nightclub's TV screen as part of a video montage. It looked freaky and surreal with all the quick edits of tight shots and stop-motion animation bits.

Tetsuo rocks, I don’t think the human psyche had taken enough damage yet to make it in the 60s though lol

I'd consider it Japan's counterpart to "Eraserhead".
  11:31pm
wimpy:

Man it’s been way too long since I last saw eraserhead, I should do that extremely soon. Might even do that tonight after the show. Watched blue velvet with my partner recently and they absolutely hated it lol, idk what they’d think of eraserhead

I would say that there are political forces at work in the USA (and internationally) which are demonstratively fascist in nature. Not just in the hippy insult sense.

true, and talking among reactionary, closed-minded idiots the term has basically no meaning...just a trigger, an insult.
- but i'd like to think that HERE the word was NOT used among idiots, and the word should be taken literally, for it's actual value and usefulness.
