Good comparison, online reading is akin to instant mashed potatoes. Maybe instant potatoes from a fire hose - you can find and read a much larger variety online, but for your favored publications, the ones you actually LIKE? Only real, creamed, whipped potatoes (with *half-and-half* or fattier dairy!) will do.

I was surprised to learn of all the variations in US state motor vehicle agency names. In VA it's always been the DMV - "Department of Motor Vehicles", as it is in CA and NY (probably why American media always refers to it the same way). But an interesting number of variations in different states.

Not sure how the genre describers would describe it - evidently there's a term "proto-prog" for a wide range of '60s material, both psych rock and psych pop. "In the Court of the Crimson King" seems to be a "divided line" for many into the "prog rock" era. But I've noticed a transition period I call "Prog 1.0" at the end of the '60s, which Shine On Brightly probably qualifies.

Others I consider part of that period would be Keith Emerson's band The Nice, Dave Edmunds and Love Sculpture, transitionary Pink Floyd, etc. Then there's the Canterbury scene, which some even consider a parallel genre.

Maybe 'PetSounds' is the first Prawg. But even that is kind of a Phil Spector style of Production in many respects... Which was early 60s. Is Sgt. Pepper Prawg ? Revolver ? ForeverChanges ?
Or conversely - nothing til Crimson ?
Maybe a little like asking if BlueCheer was Metal before Sabbath...

...there was certainly "progressive rock" - as it's generally defined, long before 1967.
but where's the line? i don't think there is one.

True, while KC's ITCOTCK is often cited as the "crystallized" or "codified" version of what came before it into prog rock, like many things I would say the actual division is so fuzzy and broad as to be unobservable.

ChuckBerry influenced Dylan's writing in some ways as much as Kerouac & Ginsberg. If Prawg correlates to Rawk that is intelligent & 'serious'. Tho it was steering away from Berry's codification of teenage experience...

can't help but think the left banke was one of the influences that culminated in "prog" ...maybe a vital one.
prog wouldn't exist without classical music, and they merged classical and pop/rock as well as or better than anyone else

I think Procul were on the label themselves at some point weren't they?

Maybe for next years hellraiser someone can do a show of songs about record labels?

Pistols's EMI & Graham Parker's Mercury Poisoning spring to mind. & Nick Lowe has a non-specific one "I love my label (& my label loves me)".

I'm sure there must be others

Much has been made of Hendrix conceiving of a RawkOpera perhaps also a cartoon Film called 'Black Gold'. & of course getting quite near collaborating with Miles & GilEvans. Point being - where Jimi would've been in the Landscape after Sept. 18th, 1970 will forever be one of our greatest What Ifs ...even I posit, how the Landscape would've been different after that with him in it...
