I actually got to interview Richard Thompson once (actually, I was accompanying a friend who was the main interviewer). It was a Legends of Guitar festival in Seville, Spain. I was accompanying a friend who edited Guitar World Magazine at the time. He was very sweet to talk to (I put my foot in my mouth-he plays Ellington's Rockin' In Rhythm on Henry The Human Fly-I asked him if he played it in real time. If I paid more attention, it was obviously overdubbed. RT was a bit embarassed, said no, it had to be overdubbed, but was kind to me...)

Read Thompson's auto bio a few months ago. It was very illuminating regarding Fairport's founding and the Brit folk rock evolution.

At one request show (he places slips of paper at every table, has you write in 2 requests, then draws them at random from a bowl and plays them), he got a request for The Beatles "And Your Bird Can Sing", with it's multiple fast guitar lines. He ALMOST pulled it off...
