Interesting to hear that almost everyone covering this song takes the Hendrix version as a kind of definitive template and borrows from it.
Avatar 1:39pm
Mr Fab:

I have a special love for "Hey Joe," as the band with the original hit version, The Leaves, were from my neighborhood, and attended my university. When i was a student, I floated the idea of making it the school song since it was so famous, covered by everyone from Hendrix on down, but was told that a song about murder didn't seem appropriate. Go figure!

ah but we have bandages for when you accidentally cut your arm on the inside of the hood/bonnet and salves for the burns when you forget to disconnect that cable and electrocute yourself

↳ Song: "Hey Joe" by "Black Uhuru"
I think the first time I heard "Hey Joe" was the Hendrix version on his first album. I was working overnight at a grocery store, assisting with thorough cleaning of the floor. Someone put on a then new FM radio station. For some reason the DJ said they only had 2 albums to play from. One was an album by The Bryds, the other the Hendrix album. The only track on the Hendrix album the DJ liked was Hey Joe, the DJ liked all of the Byrds album so from midnight to 6AM the DJ played Hey Joe and then a track from the Byrds album, Hey Joe and then another track from the Byrds album. So we heard the Byrds album a few times, one track at a time alternating with Hey Joe. By 6AM I had heard enough of Hey Joe and the "experience" made me adverse to hearing Hendrix and I declined to go see Hendrix a few months later, which meant I missed seeing the early Soft Machine trio that opened for Hendrix. Pic a friend of a friend made of Soft Machine at the show I didn't go to:

If you buy all those "Pebbles"-type comps, you'll hear a lot of versions based on the Leaves' fast, garage-y version (like Los Locos Del Ritmo). That's how it was played for a couple years until Jimi transmogrified it. Then the '80s garage revival took it back to The Leaves.
I love it in both styles.

I think Willy DeVille also did a good job of reviving at least the complete lyrics. And he didn't borrow any riff or lick from the Hendrix version.
