This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Pinto Varez shows up all over Vedette, especially in their run of non-library latin exploitation records - it's a pseudonym for Francesco Anselmo, who recorded plenty under his own name & was art director for Vedette

Such a beguiling thing to ponder.
If Soundtrack represents a Music freed from the usual constraints of palettes ...but bound to specific Imagery &/or Narrative
...then if Library Musics are the opposite end of that telescope - using any palette to conjure Imagery &/or Narrative that are not specific - that don't exist - yet...

another possible definition of library music i that its just sonic carpentry making "furniture" music, leaving a space for interpretation, awaiting a user to really complete it....

does the fact that the library music's musicians were punching a clock change or add a layer of meaning to the music? does it bring authorship into question? or to use a big small word is library music "thingafied" or reified in a different way than say thelonius monk

i think the answer to that would really change depending on who ran the studio and who was running the session - some of this stuff contains personal experiments that would be much less clock-punchy than the nightclub music they would have come up playing. some of it is pure kitsch, the clunkiness of which makes it interesting later. it's just a big world. lots of studios were run by artists, others were big conglomerates. Umiliani recorded a lot of stuff in his personal dungeon

Reification is one of those terms from Marxist cultural analysis, like Walter Benjamin's 'aura'. Is 'library music' less real than other musics? Is it just clunky non-art? Is it any less representative of complex social/psychological relationships than Wagner? My feeling is that those notions always have to co-exist with something 'over there', which is just being a sensual being and opening your leaves to the sun. Nailing it down with language kinda kills the joy, as much as I do like to think in terms.
Avatar 9:17pm
Flash Strap:

↳ tom tom the pipers son @9:15
i think there's generally the same impulses in this as in any other music, it just has a weird distribution system & lends itself to more prolific recording, which puts it somewhere between say, muzak ensembles on one hand and jazz combos that all work with each other on the other

yeah, for example a pop group has to serve the master of the audience AND the label - a library musician maybe just has to record whatever the hell they feel like that day - especially if they're their own boss, like Sciascia. the audience is much less important. what is the more free or true art, who knows. just depends
