We've played some AFRS broadcasts before. AFRS was a radio service for Military Bases, and was usually only heard on base, or nearby. But in the years since, most of the AFRS broadcasts also made it out into other Old Time Radio Collector hands, and there were some stations in the US who would air AFRS broadcasts. This was a very popular show, when it aired, and it was re-aired, often.

I'm usually anti-war, and anti-government, but I'm pro-veteran. Most of them didn't want to serve, were drafted, and then had to deal with the life they were left with, afterwards. It's terrible what many of them went through after returning home.

WWII had ended in Europe in May, and the official end of the war wasn't until the 2nd of September, 1945. But on August 6th and 9th of 1945 we dropped atomic bombs on Japan, and it was clear that the war was over, after that. While Japan wouldn't surrender until the next day, and they wouldn't officially surrender until the 2nd, for diplomatic reasons.

Of course, the people running radio for the war effort knew what had happened, and began celebrating on air on the 14th, as soon as it was obvious to everyone.

I was expecting that tonight we’d hear the dramatization of Theodore Sturgeon’s “The Stars Are the Styx” which was scheduled for last week’s aborted broadcast. Obviously not though.
Too bad, because I had prepared by reading that 1950 story from the eponymous 1979 collection whose cover painting was displayed in the chat last week (Charon, painted with Sturgeon’s face, rows a boat full of dead people as a 3-headed bulldog watches on a bank).
It was stored in the county library headquarters’ extension and hadn’t been borrowed since 2001. It was likely to be discarded during the next inventory, but I may have forestalled that.

Mr Fab:

Austin! Did family stuff on our day off, so only tuned in about five minutes ago.

But so psyched you found another version of the song “San Fernando Valley“. As a Valley boy, always happy to hear it. And of course, it predates Frank n Moon Unit by decades.

Did you ever read Harlan Ellison’s "Paladin of the Lost Hour"? Danny Kaye’s 2nd last acting job was a TV adaptation of that.

I have not! I was thinking, since we have a bunch of his books at work, that I should read more of him. I'm painfully under-read with his stuff.

Though my 2025 goal is to start over re-reading all of William Gibson's books in order. That might take a while...

Gotta love those Christmas songs you hear on the radio... in August. (When this originally aired...)

I might have accidentally played the first Christmas song of the season on Sheena's this year. Sorry 'bout that!

↳ Song: "Claudette Colbert & Archie of Duffy's Tavern"
"Duffy's Tavern" was a great long-running radio sitcom. The TV version didn't do as well.
Daws Butler imitated Ed Gardner when voicing the Hanna-Barbera character Super Snooper.

I've been meaning to listen to it more. I think I only know it by reputation.
