I do believe that most Canadians and UK dwellers are horrified by marshmallows on anything that's supposed to be savoury... but I had two American aunts that would make that all the time and I just LOOOOVED it! It was like the most amazing dish human beings ever concocted! :D

As you can hear, the recording of this show is not great. I used a number of tools to clean it up, and did a little editing to cut out a few skips and other bits that didn't age well. Hopefully this version sounds a little better, in spite of some bits that are a little crinkly and noisy. In particular, I had to cut a couple bits of Don Ameche's hosting, as one section was mangled. And I had to use AI to repair a section of an Elgin Watch Commercial that was mangled, too. More on that later...

I also appreciate that Durante is not a conventionally attractive person. He's got his own charm and charisma, but he was not conventionally handsome. And yet: he was a huge star! These days, if you are a comedian, you also have to be handsome. There's no unusual faces in the entertainment world anymore.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Song: "Elgin Commercial"
The commercials in this production are sort of integrated into show in a way that I didn't want to cut or ruin. So, all the "ads" are left in. Some are part of the show, with SFX and other bits, even.

On one Elgin commercial, the tape had a huge "hole" in the song. The tape had worn away, and the archivist just left the recording as is. I decided to use suno.com to create "new verses" of the commercial ad, and then cut in a bit from one of the new verses to repair the broken bit of the ad. Let me know if you can tell which one...

Stan Freberg entered radio at the end of its Golden Age. I believe he filled the CBS timeslot made vacant when Jack Benny left for television.

I seem to recall seeing that for sale, back in the day. I should finally give him a chance. You know how it is when you're young: you think you know better, and you write-off most of the culture of the past at first. ("What about the art of MY generation?")

Now I could give a shit about my generation.

One of the problems with Jack's jokes is that he can really play violin very well. But most of the jokes around his character is that he can't play well. He has to pretend he can't play as well as he actually can... which is sort of hard to do unless you're REALLY good.

Daws Butler and June Foray also acted on the Stan Freberg Show. They’d all worked in Warner Brothers cartoons, though they weren’t credited like Mel Blanc.
Stan voiced such characters as Chuck Jones’ Baby Bear and Robert McKimson’s Pete Puma. He acted all the parts (and sang the narration) in the 1957 Friz Freleng short “Three Little Bops” that was scored by Shorty Rogers!

Even as recently as the 60's, you would have essentially "formatless" music stations, that would play songs from any genre by any kind of artist back to back to back. It's isn't until the 70's that you start to find radio stations that really specialize in one kind of music, and only played that. It was an innovation in the 70's, but I think it set back music a couple decades.

When I was a kid Red Skelton was still performing, but he would do these long silent clown routines that I found completely befuddling.

Gotta slip in that pro-American sentiment.

At this point in my life I find almost all pro-American sentiments to be revolting. Which is what we all should be doing: Revolting.

(This is a revision of a joke that I stole from myself; my first band, Cathead, had an album called, "The Youth of America are Revolting (And They Don't Like The Government, Either)" )

↳ Song: "...Elgin Scene..." by "Clem Kadiddlehopper"
While the announcer mentioned this, and I think it might be obvious, Clem is played by Red Skelton.

↳ Song: "Scene with Don Ameche" by "Mary Jane Smith"
I can’t find any information on who this Mary Jane Smith was!
There is a modern Swedish singer named Maria Jane Smith.
And a 70’s Doctor Who companion called Sarah Jane Smith.
