Seesters  Gash   Favoriting Gash EP  Seesters  2024  Seesters are from France! "In a world full of business, w try to play music"....their hashtags are #comedy and #france Which is pretty funny. "Emerging French garage psych/psych punks Seesters — The Parisians‘ and Crush of Souls‘ Stevan Dinet and Sam Kaperski — pair political lyrics with garage and psych inspired sounds. Their second single “Gash” is a noisy and forceful ripper that brings a synthesis of The MC5, The White Stripes and The Stooges."...they have also recently played with Toronto's Wine Lips...which makes sense!  *   0:01:46 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Getdown Services  Dog Dribble   Favoriting Dog Dribble Single  Breakfast Records  2024  Meet Getdown Services, the Bristol duo who fuse ‘power disco’ with unrepentant silliness. The pair originally started the group as an attempt to escape the drudgery of their everyday circumstances, but with a burgeoning cult fandom behind them, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before they land in the big time. "When we started playing live early on it became quite obvious that this was a thing about us trying to make each other laugh, really. And that’s how the recording started and the whole thing felt ridiculous. It started to feel like, well, if other people can get something out of it then everyone’s a winner. We can have a good time and so can they. Even if people don’t enjoy it, I think they secretly do a bit!"  *   0:08:13 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Hickeys  Blink Blink   Favoriting Fragile Structure  Hickeys  2022  Madrid-based four-piece Hickeys began their musical journey in 2018, bursting onto the Spanish music scene with a sound that simultaneously embraces the darkest post-punk and the finest alternative rock, influenced, above all, by British post-punk bands. With a style that successfully marries forcefulness with sensitivity, they are committed to powerful instrumentals and disconformity. Hickeys have so far toured homeland Spain, Portugal, the UK, Italy, Germany, Norway, Holland (Eurosonic), and the United States, with performances at SXSW and the New Colossus Festival already under their belts. Hickeys have rolled out the heavy artillery with their first full-length album, Fragile Structure, released in September 2022. Fragile Structure: consisting of 10 songs and 3 interludes, this is a record about breaking points, about frustration, lack of desire. A structure that symbolizes each one of them and them altogether: what they have felt, lived, thought, appreciated and suffered. “Fragile Structure holds clues, puzzles, messages… we have designed an album as if it were an artifact to be assembled and disassembled. The album explores different points of rupture and the resulting figure that emerges from a crack.”    0:15:16 (MP3 | Pop-up)

2024

Released November 29, 2024. "Nick Storring is a composer and musician residing in Toronto. His music has been presented and performed by Eve Egoyan, Quatuor Bozzini, Beijing's Musicacoustica Festival, AKOUSMA, Arraymusic and appeared on labels such as Entr'acte, Scissor Tail, Notice Recordings and Orange Milk.//// "Storring HAS IT, his compositional prowess only eclipsed by his sense of atmosphere and space." -Tiny Mix Tapes" /////////// "During the early stages of the pandemic, I took to going on long walks with much greater frequency and the neighbourhood where I live in Toronto is super conducive to that. It's not far from High Park, and directly beside the Humber River, where there's a whole system of trails—even the streets themselves have little passageways and staircases that connect them. //////// These walks also coincided with my interest in humbucker pickups—the ones you stick in the soundholes of acoustic guitars. It turns out they're a very interesting way to amplify (ferromagnetic) metal objects. Stick them directly to the object, it's like a bit like a contact mic; hover a half inch away from the vibrating item, and you get a different tone altogether—often one with a rich low end. //////// My explorations started in my home studio with everything from barbecue skewers to a Slinky, streetsweeper bristles to steelwool, but soon I graduated to various larger metal structures I'd encounter on walks—signs, fences, sculptures, railings. Armed with my Zoom recorder, percussion mallets, bows, and guitar picks, I'd wander around scavenging for sounds. //////// Not long after I started making these performance-field recordings, they installed a pedestrian bridge in some woods (the ones in the title of this piece) just northwest of me. The first time I crossed that bridge, I instantly knew it would make a fruitful sound source. Even before I started playing on it, part of me had decided that I would make some sort of long-ish piece using it as the only “instrument.”"... https://nickstorring.bandcamp.com/

The Bleak Engineers  Morphidae Fly   Favoriting The Mystical Dream  Ufological Club Records  2024  Chups), ‘The Bleak Engineers’ has gone on to provide a home for avant-garde music experiments. Both artists have been working on the music scene for more than twenty years. They is in no hurry and has chosen the path of an independent vision of New Wave, DIY, Flexipop, 80’s soundscapes and minimal synths. Although synthesizers grew into great knob-covered beasts there are still plenty of bands like ‘The Bleak Engineers’ that are thankfully in thrall to the early synth sounds. They have a new album ‘The Mystical Dream’ coming out this fall in November 2024. Featuring 8 tracks of proto-electro punk, synth pop, analogue wave and retro-futuristic workouts. The album is made with a great love for early electronic music while never being confined to a genre. Also vintage synthesizers and garage rock'n'roll coexist here. The big charm is mixing on old analogue equipment, which gives the album a sophisticated sound. ‘The Mystical Dream’ album are both a return and an evolution for the band. The duo building a space between the melancholy, noir art and nostalgia. They don't sing about sad things and problems, they explore an imaginary world full of emotions and different magic. Opener 'Morphidae Fly' is a huge garage electro punk track with dirty precision bass line, classic drum beats from early machine and lyric from Zombierella. You might have heard something similar from Bryan Ferry's, Blondie's or Suicide's (Alan Vega / Martin Rev) - but it's definitely not them. Enjoy!  *   1:02:57 (MP3 | Pop-up)
3eme Sexe  Mon Petit Meutre   Favoriting Je T'aime Que Vous Voulez  3eme Sexe Media  2009  Presumably named after the first track of French New Wave Band Indochine's 3rd record...With simple recording technology and using only original vintage material (analogue keyboards, synths and effects devices) as well as rock'n'roll guitars and classic 60s female vocals, 3eme Sexe create their own anarchic cosmos. The influences are Sixties Beat, Seventies Pop, Yeah Yeah Style and French Song. The musical mastermind behind the 3rd Sex is the musician, composer and producer Justin Schoening. Justin has been active in the electronic scene with 3eme Sexe in various line-ups since 2006.    1:06:20 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Limiñanas feat. Bertrand Belin  J'adore Le Monde   Favoriting J'adore Le Monde Single  Berreto Music  2024  The Limiñanas are a French rock band from Cabestany, Pyrénées-Orientales, active since 2009. During their early years, distributed exclusively by American labels, the duo gained greater notoriety in the United States than in France. In 2018, the release of Shadow People, produced in Berlin by Anton Newcombe, gained the band a wider audience: magazine Rock & Folk offered the duo the cover of their January issue, and Canal+ made Shadow People its album of the week. In 2019, their debut album single Migas 2000 was chosen as one of the recurring themes in the American Netflix series Russian Doll. Later that year, The Limiñanas collaborated with actress Emmanuelle Seigner's next album and Anton Newcombe in the group "L'Épée" to release an album Diabolique. Bertrand Belin (1970) is a singer, songwriter, comedian, actor and writer. His latest, and seventh, album Tambour Vision was released in 2022, and is accompanied by a French and international tour of venues and festivals, with over 130 dates until summer 2024.  *   1:09:40 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Fleur  Je T'en Pris   Favoriting Fille Sauvage  Soundflat Recordings  2024  Known for her sweet, nostalgic blend of French 60s pop and beat sounds, Fleur has already won over hearts with her charming voice reminiscent of icons like Françoise Hardy and Sylvie Vartan. But ‘Fille Sauvage’ is a whole new chapter—one where Fleur takes her signature Yé-yé vibe straight into the garage. “I wanted to cut loose and show everyone I can get wild,” says Fleur. The album, written by Dutch garage legend Mark ten Hoor of The Kryng, promises raw energy with scratchy guitars, thundering drums, and even a touch of piano from Fleur herself. It’s a gritty, thrilling ride that blends the fire of The Troggs and The Kinks with the elegance of Françoise Hardy.  *   1:13:12 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Olivier Despax  Si Loin D'engleterre   Favoriting Olivier in London  Riviera  1966  Olivier Despax (born Olivier Despax de Kerver; 28 February 1939 – 10 April 1974) was a French guitarist, singer and film actor. The Routes  Transmission   Favoriting Surfin' Pleasures  Topsy Turvy  2024  Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, THE ROUTES are back with their unique blend of ‘beat-you-to-death surf music’ (IGGY POP). Their latest target: the music of JOY DIVISION! Having previously surfy-fied the songs of KRAFTWERK and BUZZCOCKS, ‘Surfin’ Pleasures’ sees THE ROUTES take on the music of JOY DIVISION. As with their previous ‘tributes’, this is not an album of note for note cover versions. THE ROUTES have only taken subtle melodic and rhythmic hints from the original songs; rearranging them into songs of their own, respectfully and lovingly translating the music of JOY DIVSION into a different musical language.  *   1:17:22 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Sababa 5, Inbar Nur Dekel  Bitter Moon   Favoriting Bitter Moon Single  Batov Records  2024  “Bitter Moon” is the second single to emerge from the collaboration between Middle Eastern funk specialists Sababa 5 and singer-songwriter Inbal Nur Dekel. Hot on the heels of, “Yam”, “Bitter Moon” is a melancholic yet striking ballad, counterbalanced by an irresistible Middle Eastern groove. Sung in Hebrew, "Bitter Moon" is a longing ode to an absent lover. “My heart calls your name in the distance,” sings Inbal, with longing and sadness, yet also with a deep strength matched by Sababa 5 marching rhythm and groove. Eitan Darbkin’s synths tug at the heartstrings, while Amir Sadot’s skipping bassline and Itamar Weinstein’s shuffling Middle Eastern rhythm drive the track and the listener forward.  *   1:20:58 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Ismatic Guru  Manic Vision   Favoriting An Incredible Amount of Overwhelming Information  Swimming Faith Records / Swish Swash Records  2025  Releases January 10, 2025. This is the advanced single, released Nov 29. "ISMATIC GURU is the ongoing recording project between Buffalo, NY's John Toohill (Science Man) and Bran Schlia (Helmsley). A wildly dense and completely off-leash, scrambled-egg, idiot-prog punk adventure. Groovy, freaked out new wave/post-punk littered with psychedelic flashes, punctuated by snarky, strange, slice of life lyrics about intentionally over inflating a tire, a robotic peeping tom, urban legends about drugs, shunning self-improvement, an annoying bug, going to the dentist, and the thrill of trying something new. "An Incredible Amount of Overwhelming Information" is an odyssey of ideas in 35 mins that is as unique as it is catchy and represents a culmination of 4 years, 4 EPs, and 5 new songs worth of work." https://ismaticguru.bandcamp.com/  *   1:40:40 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Circulators  Frigid Love   Favoriting Insufficient Fun  Total Punk Records  2024  Released Nov 15. Total Punk were swell & reached out to us before this came out, but unfortunately an avalanche of special & thematic programming delayed us from playing it for you before-the-fact... So here it is now, past its release date. The Circulators are from San Francisco. Their line-up for this recording consisted of Vinnie-vocals, guitar /Jimmy-vocals, bass / Giuliano-guitar / Jerj-drums. Vinnie says the following about the band (via paperfacezine) "I started the band with my friend Blake who I'd played with in a previous band after a period of musical inactivity and wanting to play in a punk band again. I met Jimmy through a mutual friend and we found out we liked a lot of the same music, so when I told him about starting a band, naturally he wanted in. Our first drummer, Nicky, came through Jimmy. After Blake left, we became a three-piece, then Jerj came in after Nicky left. Since he lived with Jimmy and we had seen him play in one of our favorite bands, The Losers, it made sense to bring him on. Then Giuliano, who was an early supporter of ours, came on board to play second guitar. We're back to being a three-piece since Giuliano went back to LA." --- & re: the album --- " I couldn't put much significance behind it other than just wanting to document those songs and make something that we could be proud of and say, "Hey, we made an actual record!" I think it's a pretty good snapshot. I'm really glad we did it ourselves. We did it in our practice space with pretty much no outside influence so it still has that sorta homemade, self-contained quality. We got lucky since Giuliano is very good at recording and knew what he was doing." https://thecirculators.bandcamp.com/  *   1:41:56 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Sleepwalking Through Lambton Woods

Self Released (Bandcamp)

2024

Released November 29, 2024. ..."worked sporadically from 2021 to 2023 on “Sleepwalking Through Lambton Woods,” and discovered various different techniques to play and record the bridge along the way. I started out in the same way that I had been making outdoor recordings before: with only my pair of Dean Markley humbuckers and a bunch of percussion implements. Eventually, when I bought a recorder with more inputs, my input arsenal grew to include a LOM Geofón, which captured the bridge's low frequencies impeccably, and a pair of contact condenser mics, that preseneted additional perspectives in vivid detail. Typically, I would distribute the various pickups to different locations on the bridge to get a full-sounding composite image, while also ensuring that each individual input was engaging on its own. //////// The performance side of things grew in parallel, the humbuckers themselves became a wonderful tool for striking or rubbing the bridge and provided grittier textures that would often defy their acoustic origins. I also started incorporating chains, brushes, bows and even e-bowed streetsweeper bristles, that would rapidly slap agains the bridge's surfaces, generating sustained tones of various kinds. //////// This work ended up being quite a challenge for me and yielded one of the oddest pieces I've made. I named it the way I did because of its peculiar form—I felt as though a good part of its creation was almost sub- or semi-conscious in some strange way. The fact that recording the material opened me up to so much scrutiny only amplified the piece's weirdness to me. I had everything from quizzical looks to fascinated conversations. Once, someone even accused me of recording her children! //////// As much as my compositions usually employ a wide variety of different instruments, I am also fascinated by limitation. That being said, I had never before made a piece of such a large scope that relied so little on pitch, and only used sounds from a single source (with next to no processing)." https://nickstorring.bandcamp.com/
