Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from December 6, 2024 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Apparently there's a traditional soldier's song called "The Girl I Left Behind Me" with completely different lyrics. I wonder if this was what Bob Brainen would call a songonym, or if Fats was just like, "Yeah, I know that one!" and made it up as he went along.

I would suggest that anyone would be wise to take anything ever stated by both Richard Meltzer and Robert Christgau with a grain of salt. They (cleverly, I think) tended to make provocative statements that sometimes bordered on pranks, in keeping with the Lester Bangs template. **the essential message is,'Hey kid, wake up and think. Use your head. Don't just passively listen to guys like me. Wise up."

Thick as a Brick [Reprise, 1972]
Ian Anderson is the type of guy who'll tell you on one album that a whole side is one theme and then tell you on the next that the whole album is one song. The usual shit--rock (getting heavier), folk (getting feyer), classical (getting schlockier), flute (getting better because it has no choice), words. C-

Christgau obviously didn't realize that he and every critic was being trolled because that was Ian Anderson's entire point, to pervert the prog rock genre and mess with their minds.

Rawk Critic as irritant. I realize this more & more about those early guys who are exalted as pioneering even the idea of anyone Writing about Rawk seriously... Being able to Write reasonably (or even very) well - & having an Opinion that should be honored are different skills. How often Critics even actually give attention to what they (supposedly) Review is a controversy...
& then yeah - Christgau will come out with a pithy observation I even reference later...
I suppose there is an anxiety built into being conspicuously Literary & elbowing into Rawk Culture that made them think offense was a good defense ...or who knows what...

Bob Christgau's very smart. So is Ian Anderson. They both wanted to write. Neither had a Dr. Evil plan. All the blah blah blah is a prepostersous shit-show. The pseudo-science of connecting all the dots and lining out the semiotics is just a slug trail behind the moving artifact, the only real thing that's there. And the core substance that thing exists largely in the mind of each individual.
