	9:33am still b/p: Power company sent email notification last evening, specifying my address, that they were aware power was off in my area for a few hundred customers. And, a little later, a notification, again with address, that power had been restored. But I never experienced even a flicker or failure in the lights or computer or dinner-cooking appliances. I'd heard what I believe was a transformer go boom nearby, however. Windows all the while rattling to beat the band, as nana used to say.

	10:11am TDK60: I'm reading 'Ecology of Fear' by Mike Davis. On the L.A. area's fire/earthquake/flood geology. I just read a page about Dick van Dyke fleeing a Malibu wildfire in 1993. Just yesterday I saw Dick had to flee a Malibu wildfire again! (I didn't know Dick was still with us!) I'm not necessarily recommending 'Fear' as gift. Hee. But Davis is great.

A friend recently told me he and some friends were in a New Jersey diner about 50 years ago, dosed up, and they had to leave because the food was snaking around on their plates and they lost their appetites. 	10:43am fm Mike: Imma have to read that book on witches. Reminds me about how I read that one of the reasons the Catholic church worked so hard to eliminate witches from Europe, was because of land accumulation. In local cultures, land passed through anyone. So the church worked to convert men to priesthood, so that by Catholic church culture, land ownership would pass through the male line, resulting in the local land falling into the church's lap. Subsequently, women would be encouraged to be nuns in the church, to further erode the power of local women leaders. That second point was two-fold, because it meant that the church could eliminate women leaders, while also chipping away at the local spiritual cultures, many of which had women as witches/shamans/healers. Very insidious.

When women became land owners (usually by death of a husband), they would become easy targets and be accused of being 'witches' so the church (or whoever was in power) could take her land. There were fees associated with jailing the "witch," paying a guard to look after her, paying a judge to determine her fate, etc... and the "witch" was responsible for paying all these fees. Don't have any money? It's fine, we'll take your house. YICK

	11:36am Trouble: hoopla doesn't have everything, but it has pushed me to read classics that i haven't read, so that is cool. but they have more than libby it appears. i never have to wait for a book. i listen to books when i commute. Just finished elena ferrante 'incidental inventions'- her weekly column from the guardian. pretty amazing to see how tremendously smart she is and how she can build up a short thing like a newspaper column then close it down quick as a wink.

I'd heard what I believe was a transformer go boom nearby, however. Windows all the while rattling to beat the band, as nana used to say.

	10:11am TDK60: I'm reading 'Ecology of Fear' by Mike Davis. On the L.A. area's fire/earthquake/flood geology. I just read a page about Dick van Dyke fleeing a Malibu wildfire in 1993. Just yesterday I saw Dick had to flee a Malibu wildfire again! (I didn't know Dick was still with us!) I'm not necessarily recommending 'Fear' as gift. Hee. But Davis is great.

	10:43am fm Mike: Imma have to read that book on witches. Reminds me about how I read that one of the reasons the Catholic church worked so hard to eliminate witches from Europe, was because of land accumulation. In local cultures, land passed through anyone. So the church worked to convert men to priesthood, so that by Catholic church culture, land ownership would pass through the male line, resulting in the local land falling into the church's lap. Subsequently, women would be encouraged to be nuns in the church, to further erode the power of local women leaders. That second point was two-fold, because it meant that the church could eliminate women leaders, while also chipping away at the local spiritual cultures, many of which had women as witches/shamans/healers. Very insidious.

When women became land owners (usually by death of a husband), they would become easy targets and be accused of being 'witches' so the church (or whoever was in power) could take her land. There were fees associated with jailing the "witch," paying a guard to look after her, paying a judge to determine her fate, etc... and the "witch" was responsible for paying all these fees. Don't have any money? It's fine, we'll take your house. YICK

	11:36am Trouble: hoopla doesn't have everything, but it has pushed me to read classics that i haven't read, so that is cool. but they have more than libby it appears. i never have to wait for a book. i listen to books when i commute. Just finished elena ferrante 'incidental inventions'- her weekly column from the guardian. pretty amazing to see how tremendously smart she is and how she can build up a short thing like a newspaper column then close it down quick as a wink.
