A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

The single biggest obstacle, IMO, to a real massive class consciousness being cemented is the relentless capitalist propaganda about the Rich.

They’ve worked very hard for centuries, spending billions and billions, in convincing people to either Worship, or Emulate, the Rich. Which is basically the basis for all advertising, and the CIA working with Hollywood/tv to churn out both nationalistic tripe (supporting the American Dream lie), Copaganda and Who Wants to be Rich & Famous garbage (think of 80’s tv and films).

But we’re truly, maybe just maybe, on the cusp of a new dawn. Have never seen anything more convincing than the public’s overwhelming reaction to the CEO assassination.

One of the keys going forward will be the public’s capacity for and involvement with instead of worship relentless mockery and ridicule of them. That, along with the implicit threat of us coming after them, I’m afraid to say looks like the way forward.

On the left side, an increasing obsession with advocacy and mobilization at the expense of organization has also been a big factor. I hope we can learn the lesson and start doing some real power analysis with respect to both our enemies and our allies. But I fear that a Trump administration will produce a lot more short-term fire-quenching strategy.

That last part. I thought about that thr other day. The memes of Luigi feel like that episode of Black Mirror, where thr guy threatens to slit his own throat of he doesn't get his girl rescued. Then, at the end of the episode, you see he is living in a high rise, and you wonder if he played the system to get closer to rescuing her, or if he just cashed in and dropped out of the idea of revolution.

A younger colleague of mine just sent around an e-mail saying she'd established a "Google Space" to talk about books. I love the idea but can't do Google products. I just e-mailed back the pile I've got going for the break:

Finishing the latest issue of The Baffler (thebaffler.com) and just started Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune, 2052–2072 (www.commonnotions.org...).

Also in the pile are

Susan Cooper, Silver on the Tree
Ananda Lima, Craft: Stories I Wrote for the Devil
David Gibbs, Revolt of the Rich (CUP)
Alvaro Enrigue, You Dreamed of Empires
Todd McGowan, Pure Excess (CUP)
James B. Haille III, The Dark Delight of Being Strange (CUP)
David J. Goodwin, Midnight Rambles: H. P. Lovecraft in Gotham

bixa, it looks like Common Notions, the press that put out Everything for Everyone, is partly based in Philly. My colleague wrote back to say that it's her favorite book of the year and she'd met the founder at the American Studies Conference. She's in Philly, so they must have talked about that.

If you show up on the Continental Subway chatboard (starting at noon JC time on the Drummer stream), I'm sure listener Bas will show up. He's in Utrecht. Amsterdam Eric is often there as well. I bet they'd have recs.

As we all know the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls:

“One person with a pistol just shook the ruling class more than decades of peaceful organizing.”

And, as we’ve seen for the past two weeks the words of the Prophet Seers on the proverbial walls of TikTok, YouTube, Twitter etc are totally in sync with the subway walls, wheat-pasted posters and banners of comrades all over NYC (and the world!).

The Profiteers are reeling in fear.

In another irony we of the 99%, to take a page out of an MBA course, need to capitalize on this crisis.

Luigi’s act is the launch pad for the rocket that is the vast, previously somnambulant majority of people who haven’t been able until now to articulate how much they desire a non-capitalist society. For those working inside in political campaigns and advocacy work you’ve never had a better opportunity to get results, probably ever.

Thanks for that excellent suggestion, HH!

During the Bernie campaigns I began writing a utopian piece describing what everyday life would look like in an America socialist economy, inspired by Edward Bellamy’s “Looking Backward” (which incidentally was one of Martin Luther King‘s favorite books).

Looking forward to this later as soon as I’m done cooking and then eating with a class of 4th graders. Teacher asked for the accompanying recipe. Mine’s called “Puttanesca for the People (including prominently Luigi Mangione).”

My latest addition: fennel seeds.

Try it! Sort of fills in in a meatless sauce with an undertone of sausage flavor, when combined with smoked paprika, another favorite ingredient.
