My Dad loved to talk about how when he was a teenager he saw Lionel Hampton at Pleasure Beach (the Coney Island of Bridgeport, if you can imagine that). He eventually dug up a newspaper ad for the show that he had kept and my brother and I saw that Charlie Parker was on the bill. We went into high gear "OH MY GOD DAD YOU SAW CHARLIE PARKER LIVE TELL US EVERY LITTLE DETAIL THAT YOU REMEMBER" and all he remembered was Hampton.

Hello Doug and drummer streamers.

I saw Lionel Hampton in the early 80s at a nice supper club. He was an evervescent (sp?) host. Don't recall his doing that drum stick trick. I like how one of the band members appears so blasé.

Hello Doug and Drumizens! Supposedly Hampton was playing on a barge on the Potomac in the late '40s and ordered his bassist to "hit the water." The bassist apparently obliged, taking his upright with him

Funny, the mention of having their mother, because last night in my dream I was a child and kissed Mother in bed to wake her in the morning -- and Daddy was not even in the bedroom and I had a twin brother and no sister in evidence. But the odd bit is that I hadn't had Mother in a dream since I can't remember when! Enchiladas sound so good. Right now, I have an amazing turkey and provolone sub with mild and hot giardinara peppers sitting in the fridge.

I went to U.ofA. one year. Dropped out. At the time it was the '60s-'70s protest ferment. Hippies. Also Anglo "conservatives." My first time around Mex.Americans, Natives. The desert and mountain landscape was great. The SW was new to me from the East.

I had a minor surgery yesterday (cancer taken from my nose--I'm okay, all is well) but I am trying to "eat myself well" as the Brits say. And taters are a fundamental thing to me

↳ Song: "Men of War" by "The Rouzan Sisters"
Wow, The Rouzan Sisters. When I lived in NOLA Wanda Rouzan was active both as a singer and as a musician. Saw her many times in different contexts. Last time I saw her was when we both happened to take the same flights from NOLA to Japan. When we transferred planes in L.A. I helped her with her baggage. She was going to Japan to perform at several small music clubs. Memories...

oh, did you end up going back to school? I hope you didn't have any scary incidents while hitchhiking.. I hitchhiked once with a friend who was a "bad influence" at age 13 and had a bad experience but came out unscathed
