I did my usual clean-up of this show, and really did as much as I could to improve the overall sound. However, I couldn't get rid of some "pops" in the recording, no matter how hard I tried. Consider it an artifact of the era.

As you can hear, they are switching the radio service between different cities, to a local "hitmaker" who can then play one song each, at all the various locations. I can only imagine the technology that was required to do this in 1945, and have it sound anywhere remotely good enough to listen to.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Austin Rich:

You can tell that they are really changing to different locations, because the sound of the bands and the sound of the audiences are different from song to song.

As you can imagine, a recording like this does not have the best "voices" on it. I used some digital tools to help beef up the announcers, so you could actually sort of hear Count Baisie. (In the original, his voice is all but buried in audience noise.)

A lot of these AFRS recordings are not well documented, so you don't always know what you're gonna get when you listen to them. When I put this on, I had the vague impression that this would be more of a variety show, based on the descriptions I found online. Turns out it's just a "Dance Party," as they were called back then. Which is fine by me; on NYE, why not just get up and dance!

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Austin Rich:

I'm sure some nerd online has probably documented this, but I should read up on how they would actually do shows like this back in 1945. It seems so bonkers to me that they would just switch back and forth between cities with such ease in 1945, but maybe it was really hard, and they're making it sound easy? Or maybe it was easy back then, and I just don't realize...

Hey, Austin! This is great. One of those bands, I think the Count Basie one, was introduced as playing at the Coconut Grove, at the Ambassador hotel in LA. Very famous spot, the real hip place to be for years. Although Robert Kennedy getting assassinated there was no fun.

Hi Rich and folks. Have been listening while heating up soup etc.

Regarding the multi-location broadcasts: There were special telephone circuits that connected the various radio network stations. Local lines to the local station would be used to connect the performance locations. Regular programs would be from single location and fed via the network to other stations. Something like the NYE broacasts took days of prep by technicians at each location and scripted coordination on the nights of the broadcasts.

Austin Rich:

When you listen to recordings from 70ish years ago, a lot of the hard consonants sound "rounded off," and a lot of words sound a little "mushy." So, when you use software to improve the voices of shows like this, they can only be as good as the mushy versions of these preserved recordings. I try to balance the improved recordings as best I can so the voices still sound natural, but occasionally the words sound a little muddled, as much as they do on the original recordings, anyway.
