yeah i used to peruse the famous pop culture library holdings in college at bgsu. i think it was first of its kind. anyway the holdings are massive and wide, including bootlegged studio and live music too.

its funny to see the performing arts access library works just like the bg pop culture library did back in the 1980s — that is, its all done by hand lol -- so my question is is there any team or anybody trying to digitally archive all this material? i imagine it would take a few supercomputers to hold it, much less the work to digitize anything!!! but still i would hope something is being done in that direction???

I believe the NYPL sale is documented in Elijah Wald's recent Harry Smith bio. There are tales of Mike Seeger finding out at the time and making copies (including sneaking records out of the library when told to stop copying records).

@TerrDD i dk about performing arts but i do know about library of congress in dc. you have to pay a fee in advance and you can take general notes, but thats it. and i believe the notes are reviewed, so you can’t directly write lyrics and the like. i know about this because somebody explained it when they did it to hear copyright holdings music of unreleased springsteen songs.
