Unsurprisingly, SNL was VERY slow to book rap acts as musical guests. Funky Four +1 notwithstanding as that was a Debbie Harry move. Despite SNL's rep for risk-taking, rap acts had to reach much higher bars than most other musical guests. And a TON of major rap acts never got booked on SNL.

Heya Mr. Wiliams and fellow listeners. Hope you all enjoyed the SNL special last eve. My wife played off Jane Curtin's absence to her advanced age (77), but Garrett Morris, at 88, was there. And where was Aykroyd? Burning questions ...

But weren't all American networks slow to book rap acts? With Debbie Harry's influence Funky Four +1 More was able to get on shortly after "Rapture" introduced the style to a wider mainstream audience. But local NYC TV programs, did they feature early rap and hip-hop? I imagine media coverage would start from there.

Looking back to that era I'm Sur eyou recall that MTV didn't even play Michael Jackson in any kind of rotation until Billie Jean/Beat it, Bowie shamed them to their face in an interview, and you know it better (and more accurately than my memory) but eventually they had to do a special format show with Freddy Braithwaite before they let rap find a place there

It's been written about before, but the MTV founder was a corporate white bro without much regard for musical diversity. Every advance in programming, showcasing musicians of color or women, came from outside pressure. Especially as cable's reach expanded, and their viewing audience expanded beyond the suburban white dudes it was originally designed for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

↳ Matt from Springfield @4:56
What's interesting is watching the Top of the Pops reruns from 1986 - perhaps with a more urbanized country where club playlists influenced the UK charts, there were several early NYC rap acts in the Top 40, and flown over to London to perform (or mime, usually). It's a fascinating look and an interesting time capsule, mapping the changing style of East Coast rap from '86 to '87 as it happened.

SNL booked only TWO rap acts in the 80s. Run DMC in '86 (performing Aerosmith hit "Walk This Way) and LL Cool J in '87. No Salt'N'Pepa, Beasties, PE, Fat Boys, Eric B+ Rakim, Kane, Slick Rick, De La, Latiah, and the list goes on. Again, SNL prided themselves on being risk takers. Ed Sullivan took more risks that SNL. Yo! came on in MTV and finally changed things there - not by design, they had no idea how big that show was gonna blow up. Anyway, two outlets that prided themselves on taking big musical swings... but not really.

Some of the ones I recall in TOTP performances:
Whistle - "(Nothin' Serious) Just Buggin'"
Doug E. Fresh & Slick Rick - "The Show"
The Real Roxanne - "Bang Zoom (Let's Go Go)"
These still retained the early, "party" style of rap, minimal sounds from one DJ. But I learned about that era from those reruns.

I'm a white guy, from Ireland and Northern California. I knew zip about rap until I hears/saw some rappers on SNL. I have since explored and learned a great deal. Grandmaster Flash was big when I discovered rap. Now it's come full circle for me with Kneecap, an Irish rap group who sing in their native tongue. Life is funny.

There was a "Metal Show" (on VH1 by that point) hosted by Scott Ian, and I learned of many classic and modern heavy bands from that. But those who remember say that it paled compared to the original "Headbangers Ball".

"120 Minutes"! The X-ers who were a bit older than me sang its praises.

Looking back, I can only be more disgusted at what "MTV" is now. They tried to bring "dumbasses" Beavis & Butthead back in 2011 - and it didn't work, because by that point they were WAY too clever for what MTV became!

I remember a musical pioneers segment on Toronto radio where the host was effectively calling out the stationā€™s bias by honouring Public Enemy. The segment always ended with a song by the featured artist. For PE the station played Cool Thing by Sonic Youth.

Fortunately all their eras are available on streaming - nowadays that's the best fit for B&B's thing. And (some of) Wonder Showzen is likewise available on Paramount now. The best part of MTV2 was their occasional marathons of those shows.

Back in the day I looked a fair bit like Neil.

Schoolkids would pretend to be Vivian & give me grief.

Once a kid actually threw half a brick at me from the other side of the road.

Time slowed as it sailed across & I was able to see him realise what he'd done & that the real world wasn't slapstick.

I was able to duck away, he d his mates screamed & ran away. I honestly think he was more scared & relieved than I was.

But whatever.

I'm going to have to claim I'm 100% Neil as the very day before the laundrette episode I'd actually exhorted my friends to help scrape up the washing powder on the hopper edges, just as Neil did on the episode the following night. :)
