↳ Song: "Straight, No Chaser" by "Thelonious Monk"
While in middle school, the library in my hometown of Traverse City, MI had a surprisingly expansive collection of CDs. I, along with another friend of mine who had also decided to dispense with any aspirations of popularity and instead lean into jazz, would regularly borrow the limit, and we'd convene in the band room after school to blast our hauls on the stereo and jam out. This record was one of the ones we found, a particular hit. Funny how much of it is still lodged in my mind, 30+ years later. That inverted counterpoint on the last chorus blew our little pre-teen minds back then, sounds just as godly these days.
