Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from April 4, 2025 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

That trip, c.'80, maybe even '78 or '79, was to hear Peter Gabriel at the Berkeley Community Theatre, which is part of the High School. I recently saw the renovated BCT again, during a tour of the high school with my daughter, who will attend come fall. It's a cool high school. They have murals of celebrity alumni, e.g., Joshua Redman, who as a student was not a "Redman," as he didn't even know his father, Dewey. No mural of David Murray, though.

Further south on Sepulveda at Artesia in Manhattan Beach is Manhattan Fine Wines (formerly Manhattan Beach Liquor), probably my favorite wine outlet in the LA area. I used to visit semi-monthly. Joe, the proprietor, knew my palate and budget, and always had right-on recommendations. One visit he asked if I'd like to sample a single malt whisky they'd opened. It was one of the Macallan line, and it was yummy. Fast forward a couple decades, I'm in Berkeley visiting a cool mom-and-pop liquor store with a decent supply of beer. The Macallan I'd sampled was available, price tag around $2000.

If you're in the area, drop by and tell Joe that Dean sent you.

Please do, @egould! I know that Wine House is nearby, and High Times is just down 405 in Costa Mesa. Those are both humongous warehouses of all sorts of booze, and I find it almost overwhelming shopping there. MFW is a boutique in the best sense of the word, a tighter range of choices, but well-curated by Joe. Prices were usually cheaper than at WH or HT.

Speaking of LA landmarks, La Brea reminds me of a Greek deli in the vicinity on Pico, Papa Cristo's, which was recently featured in this story:
https://www.sfgate.com/la/article/papa-cristos-ja-rule-commercial-los-angeles-20190469.php

I've only been once, but would love to return. You guided my visit to Chicago's Greektown, UM. It's an entire neighborhood, to which one could devostayte an entire trip. In LA, Papa Cristo's is the only game in town, not counting the Eastern Orthodox cathedral across the street. Still, worth the trek.
