The Nightingales |
The Gates Of Heaven Ajar
![]() |
The Awful Truth | Fire Records | 2025 | Released April 4. -- "U.K. group the Nightingales has an especially angular approach to punk, one that set them apart from the rest of the genre even as it was taking shape. Developing in the late 1970s and through the '80s alongside both the loud, fast, snotty punkers and anarcho post-punks, the Nightingales took as many cues from peers like the Clash and Alternative TV as they did Captain Beefheart or Faust. Though their initial run was short lived and produced just a few documents of their ever-mutating sound, the band re-formed in 2004 for a much more productive second act. They performed and recorded often, releasing multiple albums like 2020's Four Against Fate, while revisiting earlier music with the 2021 reissue of their 1982 debut, Pigs on Purpose. In 2025, the band released The Awful Truth, their first album with new label Fire Records. /////////////// The Nightingales were formed out of the ashes of early U.K. punk band the Prefects, who had been best known as the support act on the Clash's White Riot Tour in 1977. When the Prefects split up in 1979, four of the band's members regrouped as the Nightingales, centering around vocalist and bandleader Robert Lloyd. He would go on to be the only consistent member of the group as lineups shifted over the years, but the initial version consisted of Lloyd on vocals, drummer Paul Apperley, guitarist Joe Crow, and bassist Eamonn Duffy. They were ably championed by BBC Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel and released their debut single, "Idiot Strength," in 1981 on the band's own Vindaloo label in association with Rough Trade Records. The group shifted lineups before recording their debut full-length, Pigs on Purpose, and they signed to Cherry Red Records for its 1982 release. Second album Hysterics followed in 1983, and third LP In the Good Old Country Way came after it in 1986, each with different personnel. By 1986, Lloyd dissolved the Nightingales to focus on work as a songwriter, producer, label manager, and solo artist. /////////////// The Nightingales re-formed in 2004 and released four 7" singles as well as playing several select concert dates. In 2006, they released Out of True, their fourth full-length effort and first in 20 years. From that point forward, the band were more active than before, releasing new material steadily with albums like 2008's Insult to Injury and 2012's No Love Lost. They performed often and lineups still shifted around Lloyd, but the Nightingales released new music throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s, kicking off the new decade with 2020's Four Against Fate and a 2021 reissue of their debut album Pigs on Purpose, extended to include early singles and unreleased demos. Also in 2021, the feature-length documentary film King Rocker was released, focusing on vocalist Lloyd and his work in both the Prefects and the Nightingales. The Nightingales were especially productive in the wake of King Rocker, releasing a soundtrack-styled compilation for the film, 2022 EP The New Nonsense as well as their 2022 full-length The Last Laugh, a live album, and in 2025 a new set of riff-heavy acerbic rockers entitled The Awful Truth. ~ Fred Thomas" https://thenightingalesuk.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:02:31 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Entertainment! | EMI / Warner Bros. | 1979 | "Influential rock band member dead at 69 ahead of farewell tour... Dave Allen, the bass guitarist for Gang of Four’s first two albums, died on Saturday at his home while surrounded by his family, former bandmate Hugo Burnham announced. A cause of death was not given, but Burnham said Allen had suffered from early-onset dementia for years. “It is with broken yet full hearts that we share the news that Dave Allen, our old music partner, friend, and brilliant musician, died on Saturday morning,” Burnham wrote on Instagram. “[Gang of Four singer] Jon [King] and I went to see him and spent a lovely afternoon with him and the family. We talked and laughed for hours, sharing rich and vivid memories of good times together. Adventures, careers in music, raising families, our interwoven lives spanning half a century. We’ve been so very lucky to have had the Ace of Bass in our lives. We know that Dave would have wanted nothing more than to step onstage with us again in Portland on our farewell US tour. But it’s now a bridge too far. Goodbye, Old Friend.” According to Billboard, Gang of Four formed in the 1970s with a lineup that included Allen, Burnham, King and guitarist Andy Gill, who died in 2020. Allen performed on the English post-punk band’s early works, including 1979’s “Entertainment!” and 1981’s “Solid Gold"" | 0:05:39 (MP3 | Pop-up)

If Your Mirror Breaks | Ex Records | 2025 | In my estimation, The Ex are the other only band that ever mattered. Almost like an April Fool's joke, on April 1, The Ex dropped a new track & announced a new album for that week's end. Unlike morning pranks revealed by noon, this gift kept giving. "This one's for Steve" says the dedication on the back cover, in reference to friend & former recorder Steve Albini. Fittingly "The Loss" can be found on track 7. The chorus also features seven repetitions of the word 'loss'. ////////// Per BC: "The Ex started playing in 1979. Using guitars, bass, drums and voice as their starting point The Ex have continued to musically explore undiscovered areas right up to the present day: collaborations with jazz musicians and an Iraqi-Kurdish band, Kamagurka, Tom Cora, Sonic Youth, Han Bennink, Jan Mulder, Shellac and Wolter Wierbos. In 2002 The Ex set up a lively musical exchange with Ethiopia." //////////////////// ---> "In true ‘Ex fashion’, If Your Mirror Breaks picks up where 27 Passports left off, and erupts like a musical short story collection, a ten-part series of surrealist daydreams, calls to action, ominous warnings and bursts of vitality tapped into the pulse of time. What time could be more appropriate to release this album in, as the current one? Arnold de Boer, Katherina Bornefeld, Andy Moor and Terrie Hessels once again impress with their trademark urgency and creativity." ---- The Ex - Bandcamp | * | 0:09:31 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

The former journalist made a name for herself in the electronic music scene, with her experimental sound collages, confrontational texts and unique way of performing live solo. She interweaves dub, post-punk, and psychedelic with shadows of dnb and a strong emphasis on the voice. ////// Anika channels her frustration, anger, and confusion with the world into her third album, Abyss. //////// Recorded live to tape at Berlin's legendary Hansa Studios, the album captures raw energy with minimal overdubs, resulting in a visceral and urgent 10-track journey fueled by intense emotions. The recording process, done in just a few days with a live band, emphasizes immediacy, offering a sound that’s both physical and direct." https://anika.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:13:24 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Horror | Fire Records | 2025 | Interview w/ Jon Langford ahead! (Near Future) -- This song starts unlike any Mekons song in their 50 year [and counting] career, sounding as fresh & vital as ever, while keeping true to form. Another truly D.I.Y. "original wave of punk" band that quickly tread new ground and never stopped. ////////// "Review: April 3, 2025 ~ THE HOBBLEDEHOY - By Simon Coffey ---> "Horror has rekindled my love affair with The Mekons... ...UK Punks Mekons were born in 1976, during 1970s crisis Britain, their resistance narrative was steeped in Cultural Marxism (think Democratic Socialism in the 21st Century) and shaped by music, art and literature. --- Their Leeds-based collectivist neighbours were The Gang of Four, Delta 5, Scritti Politti and Fad Gadget, all were inspired by the Sex Pistols, some, like them, fell by the side, but the (Mighty) Mekons have kept the punk rock message of resistance in tenacious stead for almost 50 years! --- 50 years, well somethings have changed, with only two original members from Mekons Story years (1977-82), Jon Langford and Tom Greenhalgh, along the way many have joined, including luminaries such as Lu Edmonds (Shriekback, Public Image Ltd and The Damned) and drummer – Steve Goulding (who played on The Cure’s Let’s Go to Bed, and Elvis Costello’s Watching the Detectives) --- What hasn’t fallen by the wayside is Mekons collective anarcho-communist sociopolitical resistance to the dissonant state of the world around them. Horror abounds with resistance to (British) Imperialism, arms dealing, geopolitical bullies (think Trump and Putin) and even the fascicle nature of modern-day punk rock (lazy love songs with flaccid-oomph). --- Horror, Mekons' 20th (proper) album, their first in five years, and first on Fire Records, is not a million miles away from their 1978 (almost) smash hit Where Were You?, a Marxist love song, possibly the greatest punk rock love song ever written. But as the decades have passed Mekons have adopted, adapted, consumed and revelled in musical genres, adding to their punk/post-punk origins from (English) folk, (early American) country and roots dub. --- Mekons have been teasing Horror since last year with singles You’re Not Singing Anymore, Mudcrawlers, War Economy and The Western Design (which leads Horror) being released online strategically since late 2024. As exemplars, these four offer wide-ranging glimpses into the diversity that inhabits the Mekons creative ID. Horror is almost a microcosm of 50 years of Mekon-ism. It’s switching lead male/female (Sally Timms crystalline tones are unsurpassed) vocals, harmonious-violin versus noise-guitar, voracious beats mirrored by gentle rhythms, the personal (Glasgow) versus the political (War Economy), all of which have created an album that rivals (or maybe compliments) the mighty two: The Quality of Mercy Is Not Strnen (1977) and The Edge of the World (1986) --- Horror has rekindled my love affair with Mekons, a fanboy, I am, of the Mekons Story years and endeared by the Sin City (84-88) period, I am hopeful that Horror is a reason to keep the Red & Black flag flying." https://mekons.bandcamp.com/ | * | 0:20:40 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

On the Quarter Days

On the Quarter Days [EP] | Tapete Records | 2025 | From 'Louder Than War' --- "The mighty PROLAPSE return with a new single... ...Released on Tuesday 25th March, it’s called On The Quarter Days and, in the band’s very own words, the title alludes to the following: “In the very olden days, the nearest you could get to nothing was to pay a peppercorn rent – a nominal sum. This was a symbolic act which was often paid on the quarter days – 4 days a year when you could sign a binding contract without giving anything away.” ///////////// This is great news for those of us (that’s including me of course) who still believe that this band are one of the greatest ever to have blessed us with gloriously addictive noise in the last 50 years. ///////////// The band have been sporadically gigging between their normal day jobs (only two of which involve music full time) since their unexpected and much welcome regrouping in 2015 – tentatively – and then again in 2022 – properly for a series of live dates – and have been hinting at recording new material for some time (having debuted some new numbers at the recent live shows), and now after a gap of over 25 years since their last album Ghosts Of Dead Aeroplanes, they issue this first taster for a forthcoming new album – slated for release later in the year. ///////////// Comprising the original sextet of ‘Scottish’ Mick Derrick, Linda Steelyard (both on vocals), David Jeffreys on guitar, Pat Marsden on guitar/keys, and the formidable rhythm section of ‘Geordie’ Mick Harrison on bass and ‘Octopus’ Tim Pattison on drums, along with seventh partner-in-crime the venerable Donald Ross Skinner, the band previewed their first new release on the Mark Riley & Gideon Coe Show on 6Music just a few days ago on 20th March. ///////////// On The Quarter Days does not disappoint: it’s as if Prolapse have been cryogenically frozen in all that intervening time and have returned sounding as youthfully cocksure, brash, bright, breezy and belligerently vital as ever. It starts like a homage to Kids In America (by Kim Wilde – but don’t be fooled for one second!) with a throbbing one-note synth tattoo before bursting into the usual and reassuringly familiar trademark post-punk-meets-Kraut-meets-noise-rock dual guitar assault that has Mick and Linda doing their usual terse call-and-response wordplay and sounding like neither have changed one iota since 1999, whilst an undercarriage of unsettling discordant noise threatens to derail the track but somehow doesn’t manage to succeed due to the rhythmic tightness of the propulsive bass and drums. ///////////// As sure as night follows day, the insistent, nagging circular riffing builds to a typically frenetic and thrillingly noisy climax and that, in itself, is the essence of Prolapse. On The Quarter Days is seven minutes of perfectly controlled beautiful chaos, just like before, but still with tunes!! ///////////// The new single will be available on all streaming platforms (no physical format as yet to be confirmed)." "Death In Vegas announce first new album in nine years ‘Death Mask’ and share two The band's seventh studio LP is set to drop in the summer" "On June 6th, Death In Vegas return with new album ‘Death Mask’, where disintegration, overload and total sonic immersion tell a personal tale. With dirty circuitry and rough-hewn textures at the fore, this is gritty, unpolished techno; an audio outlier that’s full of personality, and a bold artistic statement. It’s closer in DNA to the grainy growl of sunn O))), or the searing intensity of Underground Resistance at their fiercest, and as far from generic influencer business as you could possibly get. ////////// “I’ve been soaking in Ramleh’s ‘Hole In the Heart’, the machine funk of Terrence Dixon’s Population One, Jamal Moss’ psychedelic techno jams, the stunning minimalism of Mika Vanio’s Ø and Panasonic, the layered drones of LOOP, and drowning in the acid of TM 404” ////////// Broader inspirations are weaved into the album’s fabric too; from his Thameside Metal Box studio and evocations of nautical ghosts, to lamentations for a broken world, to memories of a youthful Detroit pilgrimage, and the innocent fraternity of rave euphoria, there’s a lot going on, acting as a chronicle of moments, and locations.of personality, and a bold artistic statement." | * | 0:31:04 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Wer das Hört ist Doom | doom | 2023 | The Berlin trio lead by ARM (vocals/bass), Boris Guschlbauer (Guitar) and WTO (Drums) formed in Berlin in 2018, ceate a mix of punk rock and neue deutsche welle with songs less than 1 minute long. "Alte weiße Frau, Bitte schön" is the unique extended radio edit, being that it is the longer edit as it otherwise would be. The narrative of the song addresses the old white woman dancing her way to the top of the pops, steady but slowly leveling with her sweetheart, the old white man, when it comes to privilege, use of power, being will strong and other values that come into this often described picture. The song can be seen as a manual for those (men and women alike) who want to be aware of their power, to show it and to use it. On the way up there’s a lot of friction, as in anticipating other people’s feelings or listening to lame advice or thinking less of yourself just because of dirty fingernails, “oh ::: hahaha, that’s not going to stop me ; ) !!!" | 0:46:11 (MP3 | Pop-up)

The Show Must Go | Lo | 2015 | A prime example of how so many fine bands and sounds can be missed by those of us with the best of listening intentions....After the immense futuristic irony of naming their 4th album “Well Done Europe” in 2010, The Chap Eurogroup choose to do “here and now” by tackling the political in rock music with the release of their 6th album “The Show Must Go” – a diatribe on the absolute certainty that rock music has not and will never ever change the world. It’s the sound of despair in the face of awesome idiocy. Or, as the band put it: “In the midst of events that deeply affect our family and friends, we are united in the realisation: you can take Democracy out of Europe, but you can still tour Europe. Fuck you, Europe. We are The Chap, we are Europe.” Ahead of their time in many ways, while laden with comforting distorted and loud guitars of the shoegaze and a nod to Sonic Youth... | 0:51:53 (MP3 | Pop-up)

The sound is strutting, slinking psych-rock meets pop, with warmth running through the tapes, and a matador’s sense of dramatic style. "I have a lot of different genres in me, I also don’t like making the same song over and over again, it felt more exciting to explore different arrangements and dynamics. I think that I always will do that because I get kind of bored of repetition....Songwriting for me can be a way to escape for sure, I love a song to be like a room in the room. And if it’s a good idea for a song you feel obligated to put furniture in it and finish it. That room could also be a beach or a thought, and it might become a full song as long as you want to hang out in it for a while." | * | 0:56:36 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Listen | Feel It | 2025 | More uh uhh uh uhh uh uhhh...that is the best earworm ever about the evils of sugar. I love sugar. Frosted Flakes were the best. And the worst. In the heart of the heartland, a mere ten miles from where the airplane carrying Buddy Holly crashed into a frozen cornfield, lies Mason City, Iowa. A town so small that it's pre-pandemic punk scene (with 20+ bands) went almost entirely unnoticed. That is, until the music of WHY BOTHER? and the "Punk on the Plains" compilations (curated by WB? drummer Paul), were made available by Tremendo Garaje - one of YouTube's most obsessive gateways into contemporary underground punk music. WHY BOTHER? is Terry on vocals + synth, Speck on guitar, Pamela on bass, and Paul on drums. Their sound takes the classic Midwestern punk approach of The Zero Boys and Toxic Reasons, adding in warm layers of synth and sci-fi thematics ala The Spits and darker post-punk moments in the vein of early Joy Division. Yet there's so much more to this band that defies comparison, for WHY BOTHER? are truly a singular experience. | * | 0:58:57 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Self-Improvement started up as a long-distance project during the pandemic where the members sent songs back and forth from San Francisco to Long Beach. Self Improvement's chaotic in the way a math rock band can switch up beats and riffs with the same amount of force that a crash test dummy flies into a windshield. The guitar feedback almost sounds like broken glass, or a ping pong match where the guitar and bass battle it out. On top of all the instruments, Jett's vocals lure the listener in with introspective lyrics and a cadence reminiscent of early punk bands like Naked Aggression or X. | * | 1:01:02 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

"All of your anger is packed with a beautiful barrage of industrial back-beats, Adderall-addicted bass lines, and so much grizzled shouting from dual vocalists John Watson and Vic Byers that you can almost taste the blood dripping from their windpipes. ////// With three years since their debut LP, We Found This, the 12 tracks on this new record feel wholly distinct. Where every rock critic’s favourite word, “angular,” was painted all over that first record, it’s exciting to see that All of your anger transcended that categorization, instead opting for a path with no map." ////"The title for Gloin’s sophomore full-length is, in itself, quite loaded, brashly setting the tone for an intense listening. Ironically though, the album is actually a vibrant, uplifting listen packed with high-energy bangers that drip with gritty satire. Past a fierce facade, we are treated to a deeply emotional and strikingly energizing lyrical universe that does well to balance healthy paranoia and asserted commentary. Whether digging into childhood trauma, shame or self-doubt, questioning the daily grind, public standards and tech/electronics, or more broadly pondering about existence itself, the album ends up feeling much like a brutal but most-welcomed therapeutic musical onslaught." ||||||||| TORONTO OCCUPANTS... Ill At Ease | Born Losers | 2025 | Preoccupations' beautifully rough version of post-punk is equally life-affirming and well-versed in existential dread. The band's debut album, 2015's Viet Cong, mixed post-punk, psych-pop, shoegaze, noise, and electronics in fearless ways that nevertheless maintained a very human pulse. This connection to their humanity remained on all of their albums, though Preoccupations' music became subtler and more open-ended on 2016's Preoccupations, more anthemic on 2018's poised New Material, and more confrontational on 2022's Arrangements. Preoccupations' beautifully rough version of post-punk is equally life-affirming and well-versed in existential dread. Flegel was a member of the celebrated Calgary indie rock band Women while Munro had formerly played guitar with Lab Coast. Flegel and Munro began working on songs together during a European tour as part of Chad VanGaalen's backing band; when they heard about the death of Women guitarist Chris Reimer, they realized it was time to start a new project. They recruited former Women drummer Mike Wallace and guitarist Danny Christiansen, who had worked with Flegel and Wallace in a Black Sabbath tribute act. Originally named Viet Cong, in 2013 the band released a four-song cassette — cleverly titled Cassette — that they sold at their shows during a North American tour with Freak Heat Waves. Following their performance at the 2014 CMJ Music Festival, the group signed to the Canadian label Flemish Eye, who issued two songs from the cassette as a single (in the U.S., Mexican Summer released an expanded seven-song version of the tape as a 12" vinyl EP in 2014).In January 2015, the band released their self-titled debut album. Produced by Graham Walsh, Viet Cong added noise and electronics to the band's moody mix of post-punk, shoegaze, and straight-ahead indie rock. ///////////// Citing concerns that their name might be offensive to some, in April 2016 the band announced they had changed their name to Preoccupations. Their first album under that name, September 2016's Preoccupations, was a more considered effort that nevertheless highlighted the heavy and danceable sides of their music and featured a guest appearance by Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner. A deluxe version of the album included a single with covers of Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Key" and the Raincoats' "Off Duty Trip." | * | 1:30:16 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

A Rock Unsteady | We Are Time | 2025 | New Chance Announces Sophomore Album 'A Rock Unsteady,' Shares "Oh Mercury" //// It's the follow-up to the project's 2021 debut 'Real Time' //// Toronto musician, producer and astrologer Victoria Cheong has announced her sophomore album as New Chance, previewed today by lead single "Oh Mercury." //// A Rock Unsteady is due May 23 through We Are Time. With additional production from Johnny Spence, it's the follow-up to the 2021 debut Real Time, and saw Cheong undertake an intensive study of metakosmios, the concept of "worlds between worlds" that dates back to Ancient Greece. //// The record's lead single — featuring guest vocals from Isla Craig, Robin Dann (Bernice) and Felicity Williams (Bahamas) — exemplifies the various states of in-betweenness found between the known and unknown. //// "It is about relationships both external and internal and what it takes to get along," Cheong explained in a press release. "The song ends with an a cappella coda I call 'Seem to Agree Score,' in which we hear how a group of voices can have a unified intention while also expressing individual difference." | * | 1:34:45 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

"noise rock bullshit etc." The very young and unpredictable band have sonically dynamited the generation gap to a chasm the size of Death Valley. They do noise-rock the way that Pussy Galore, Free Kitten, Huggy Bear and (to our ears) Twin Infinitives-era Royal Trux did: stripped of art-school pretensions and left with catharsis through feedback. | 2:01:39 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Comprising vocalist Lucina Mays González (Black Hondo, Madly, Sin Sin 77), guitarist Alia Jyawook (Hot Nerds, El Vez’s The Screamers), bassist Mike Delgado (Moving Units, Shark Attack, Braggers) and drummer Charlie Brownell (Creepxotica, The Nephews, Buzzkill Romantics), Scary Pierre is driven by a darkly infectious post-punk sound with a hedonistic rock ‘n’ roll streak. Single | Glitterbeat Records | 2024 | Trupa Trupa is psychedelic post punk band from Gdańsk, Poland. According to Metro, they are combining post-punk and psych with skill. “The Beatles sing Joy Division oversimplifies them but doesn’t misrepresent them”. According to The Guardian, “the band’s music blends off-kilter melodies, dense instrumentation and lyrical explorations of the darkest side of the human condition”. The Times compares them to Sonic Youth, Radiohead and the Manchester scene in the 80s. According to Mojo, their “gripping and energetic record packs a serious punch”. KEXP highlights “ominous guitars, stern rhythms and haunting melodies” and The Quietus agrees. As Pitchfork describes, “Trupa Trupa are the rare dystopian post-punk band to embrace optimism and levity as necessary survival mechanisms. They may not have the perfect prescription for a better world, but they welcome you to imagine one together”. | 2:07:44 (MP3 | Pop-up)

It’s a place where the only way things happen is if you make them happen. Single | Wifeswap | 2024 | This unfortunately (fortunately?) named band gets over the weirdness of the name. Wifeswap is the project of Offaly native Joe Brody, currently based in Dublin. (singer, rhythm guitar) who is joined by Jasper Ryan (guitar), Cian Bates (bass) and Lorcan Connolly (drums). Following the debut single “Inertia” which secured the band a place in the top 30 bands in Ireland by the Neon Room Dublin at the end of 2023, the band returned with the 7” double A-side record “Spiritus Mundi / Happy Days” which was released at a sold out Whelan’s upstairs headline show. Combining art rock & literary influences, Wifeswap debuted in October 2022 at a sold-out Workman’s Cellar gig. Since then they’ve taken to the main stage at Whelan’s Ones to Watch festivals & multiple times at The Workman’s Club bank holiday events curated by Trevor Dietz (Manager, Fontaines D.C.). With support slots for local legends such as Yard & Nerves and International heroes such as Peter Doherty & Been Stellar, the band have forged a name for themselves in the Irish alternative music scene. Single | Rough Trade | 2025 | NEW TODAY! It’s official: after various hints over the last six months, Pulp have announced their first album in 24 years! (The last was 2001’s We Love Life that was produced by Scott Walker). It’s titled More and will be out June 6 via Rough Trade. Here’s Jarvis Cocker on how it happened: “Well: when we started touring again in 2023 we practiced a new song called ‘Hymn of the North’ during soundchecks & eventually played it at the end of our second night at Hammersmith Odeon. This seemed to open the floodgates: we came up with the rest of the songs on this album during the first half of 2024. A couple are revivals of ideas from last century. The music for one song was written by Richard Hawley. The music for another was written by Jason Buckle. The Eno family sing backing vocals on a song. There are string arrangements written by Richard Jones & played by the Elysian Collective.” More was made with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Beth Gibbons) over just three weeks in London last fall. “This is the shortest amount of time a Pulp album has ever taken to record,” Jarvis notes. “It was obviously ready to happen.” | * | 2:18:35 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Hard Times Furious Dancing | The Leaf Label Ltd. | 2025 | Released March 28, 2025 / Snapped Ankles / London, UK ---- "Snapt Rayvers with some heavy Logtronica!" /////// Austin: vocals, keyboards, log synths & guitar /////// Chestnutt: sequencers & synths ////// Parry: bass synths & sequencers /////// Long: drums, percussion & sequencers |||| snappedankles.com |||| gofundtrees.co.uk |||| "Hard Times Furious Dancing is an invitation to all those lost in the unrelenting noise of the present, to leave it all behind and come together in the forest. Driven by the primitive thrust of their single-oscillator ‘log’ synths, high and low culture collide in a surreal, free flowing narrative - but the rhythm is universal. This is easily the closest Snapped Ankles have come to capturing their rapturous live energy in the studio. It’s everything you’ve come to know and love from a Snapped Ankles album, amped all the way up until the ground begins to shake. ////// The sound of Hard Times Furious Dancing evolved at Snapped Ankles’ South London ‘Forest Rayve’ club nights in 2024 in response to that age-old primal urge to bring people together and make them move. It’s the first time the woodwose have road tested new material to this extent before committing it to tape since debut album Come Play The Trees, and in doing so have harnessed that feral energy once again. This surreal human/woodwose connection is the very best release from an algorithm that knows you better than you know yourself. Landfill | Gadzook | 2025 | Young Knives are from Oxford, UK --- "Young Knives are an English alternative – indie rock band originally from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. The band is essentially brothers Henry Dartnall (vocals, guitar), and Thomas Dartnall (vocals, bass guitar), also known as his stage name “The House of Lords”. Their new album `Landfill` is released this month and sees the band contemplating the nature of their existence, and having their vision fixed on how they can best catalogue it through the music. “It’s a record about letting things go before they are taken from you, including the carefully curated images of ourselves. Embracing everything the world throws at you and not taking it to heart,” explained vocalist Henry Dartnall. //// The album opens with `A Memory of Venom` with underlying piano keys and cello strings and vocals spread atop with occasional harmonies. It`s a tender fairly melancholic number that has an almost haunting mystical lyrical sentiment. There was a much more funky jazzy vibe about `Ugly House` which is drum led initially and has vocals that are rapidly shared. It slows down at times throughout but feels kind of psychedelic throughout its lifespan. //// `Cause & Effect` may be the relationship between two events or situations, where one of the two is the cause of the other. Here it`s a bit of a quirky listen with distorted vocals along with a spoken word stream of consciousness and some rolling beats. Thomas Aquinas developed several arguments for the existence of God, one being the second way which may be hinted at in `The People from The Second Way`. It drifts along with lyrics that may or may not be about God, a celestial being or a deity. //// `Dissolution` has lyrics aimed at killing off your ego partly inspired by `Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy`. The words are about the dissolution of the ego or ego death; a thing that appears in eastern religions and was written about in Joseph Campbell’s “A Hero’s Journey.” It`s all set to a ragged jagged quirky soundtrack. A drum machine beat paces us through the electronic `No Sound` which may well be about mortality..." https://youngknives.bandcamp.com/ | * | 2:40:53 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Noble And Godlike In Ruin | Joyful Noise Recordings | 2025 | "Last month, Deerhoof announced their new album Noble And Godlike In Ruin. So far we’ve heard “Overrated Species Anyhow,” “Sparrow Sparrow,” and “Immigrant Songs,” and today they’re back with “Under Rats” featuring Saul Williams. //// On Instagram, drummer Greg Saunier wrote of [this] track: Almost as bad as the crimes of the ruling class are the crimes that enable them: tricking everyone into thinking that no one else cares. There were so many times when we were making our new record when we became almost overwhelmed with doubt: “What’s the point of music when genocide is standard fare and the murderers are the most rewarded people in society?” Saul Williams was and is someone we look to. Who’s doing it like Saul? He’s been there every day with poetry, with grief, with news that oligarch-owned media doesn’t touch for months. Making us all feel less alone. We express ourselves in order to find our chosen family. //// I met Saul at a tiny music festival in Switzerland. I was performing a duo with Marc Ribot, and Saul was performing with a string quartet. When it was over Saul, Marc and I talked American politics backstage for hours, and I immediately felt I’d become acquainted with someone I would respect for a lifetime. I’ve been grateful ever since." https://deerhoof.bandcamp.com/ | * | 2:44:03 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

Returning after three years, the band helmed by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers have previewed the record with its first single, “catch these fists.” //// “We were just kind of having fun and exploring,” Chambers shared in a statement. The dance-punk song is at once playful and threatening, set to a chaotic video marked by an impromptu kidnapping, milk swallowed down in huge gulps, and a kick line as Teasdale sings: “I don’t want your love, I just want to fight. /////// For Teasdale, the primary focus while creating moisturizer with Chambers and producer Dan Carey was making sure it would be fun to perform live. “It was very natural that we would write the second record together,” she said. ////// The content itself was less natural as the musician warmed up to writing love songs from a new perspective. “I thought I was straight all of my life until I met my current partner — these love songs are about them,” Teasdale said. “I just found it so much more interesting and empowering to be writing love songs where I’m not lusting over a man — it feels a little bit different.” | * | 2:47:47 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Instant Holograms on Metal Film | Warp Records | 2025 | 10 Apr 2025 | By Elizabeth Guest --- "Stereolab Return with New Single ‘Aerial Troubles,’ Announce Album and Tour //// When a number of Stereolab fans mysteriously received a package stamped ‘unsolicited Stereolab material’ earlier this month, the return of the English-French outfit perhaps appeared more imminent than previously considered. Yet the band’s return was confirmed on the 8th of April 2025, with the official release of their newest single, ‘Aerial Troubles. ’ Coupled with an accompanying album, ‘Instant Holograms on Metal Film’, released on 23rd May via Duophonic UHF Disks/ Warp, Stereolab also announced an extensive international tour. Following this three-part announcement, it is safe to say that Stereolab have returned, with ‘Aerial Troubles’ being swiftly christened as a swirling, spring-time soundtrack. //// Despite it being a decade and a half since the release of their last studio album, the release of ‘Aerial Troubles’ proves that Stereolab are still at their art-pop best. Promptly picking up where they left off, ‘Aerial Troubles’ naturally features the characteristic cooing, caressing vocals of Laetitia Sadier, along with Tim Gane’s groove-laced guitar. In true Stereolab fashion, the band employs whirring, celestial synths and honey-laced backing vocals, successfully making even the most surreal of lyrics into a curving, catchy number. The single opens with brooding piano notes and Sadier’s ominously dreamlike vocals, then swiftly shifts into the melodically synthesised playfulness that Stereolab fans know and love. Even though the single is undoubtedly reminiscent of vintage Stereolab sound, ‘Aerial Troubles’ is by no means a stagnant nor a repetitive release. After decades of honing their creative craft, it is a marker of a band confident and anchored in their abilities. //////////// ‘Aerial Troubles’ features all the ingredients for a successful Stereolab single and proves that time has not blighted Stereolab, nor their creative output. If ‘Aerial Troubles’ is anything to go by, then 23rd May should be marked on all Stereolab fans’ calendars with a large, red circle, as the release of ‘Instant Holograms on Metal Film’ certainly promises to be a similar, ethereal effort. //////////// The thirteen track ‘Instant Holograms on Metal Film’ will be available on double vinyl LP, in both standard and colour variants, along with compact disc and digital formats. The band begin in undertaking their global tour in late May, with Stereolab playing dates across the UK in December 2025." | * | 2:51:02 (MP3 | Pop-up) |

massage and acupuncture, and chiropractic, actually get people healthy and independent of the pharmaceutical industry - which is not what they're looking for.

for the last ~6 months he'd been denied cigarettes, limited coffee, had a tv and squishy chair bought for him where he was plopped down inside his hot, stuffy cluttered apartment all day every day; instead of out on his porch having spontaneous social visits and watching the girls walk by; and taking slow walks to get coffee or a cookie.
i think *that's* what killed him.
