Favoriting June 21, 2006: Show 184: filling in for Donna (listen to entire show / each individual set / each individual song)

The start and end times of each song and set are exact.

Show time: 11 PM - 2 AM

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

(*** = special)

Artist Track Album Label Comments Special

Set 1 (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster, Panaiotis  Lear (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Deep Listening  New Albion  Recorded inside an abandoned huge water cistern with an equally huge reverb time - up to 45 seconds. Accordion, didgeridoo, trombone, voice and found metal pieces all blend together to make something peaceful and glorious - and all without any electronic processing.  ***
rhBand  Track 4 (San Francisco 6/21/97) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting First Tone  Drunken Fish  Slow and quiet start lead to heavier electronics - and help set up Speaker Swinging, which follows.
Gordon Monahan  Speaker Swinging (Side A) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Speaker Swinging  GM (Gordon Monahan)  Imagine a darkened stage. Then imagine performers on that stage swinging illuminated speakers "helicopter-style in three 22 foot diameter circles." The resulting performance and soundscape are really spectacular. I've been hoping to play this piece again for years and, now that it has reappeared in the FMU library, I can.

Gordon Monahan puts it, in part, this way:

"Speaker Swinging grew out of a desire to animate the typical electronic music concert and, in effect, to realise the loudspeaker as a valid electronic music instrument in itself."

"Speaker Swinging was first inspired by hearing Trans Am automobiles cruising on a hot summer night with Heavy Metal blaring out of the windows. As the cars cruised by, there was that fleeting moment of wet, fluid music, when one tonality melts into another."

There are a bunch of pictures of a performance of Speaker Swinging here.

Mic break between Sets 1 & 2. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 2: the old radio show portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Pat Novak, For Hire  Dixie Gillian   Favoriting Originally broadcast November 24, 1946.  (no label)  Jack Webb plays the severely down and out waterfront detective / do anything for money Pat Novak in this, the cult series that really launched his career. It is this series that resulted in his getting the role he is known for, as Sergeant Joe Friday on the radio and then TV series Dragnet.

This episode is the first in the Pat Novak series, which was known for its frequently absurdist and sharp one-liners.

Here are some from this episode:

"Her voice was OK, too - reminded you of a furnace full of marshmallows."

"It was so quiet, you could hear a worm with whooping cough."

"When it's finished, you've been through a lot of tight spots - like a piece of bubblegum in a set of false teeth."

"You couldn't hold a moth with a searchlight."

"It was like trying to walk a baby on a floor full of marbles."

Mic break between Sets 2 & 3. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 3: headlong into the percussive and beats-y. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Maxime de la Rochefoucauld  Hexadecimal Formula (track 10) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Orchestraki  Storyboard  Sustained and easy tempo, warm and ambient percussiveness, best on this CD by far - and some other tracks are very good, indeed. They're from Quebec.  ***
The Jesus Trip  The Problem (track 5) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting The Morning Star  Bottled Rag  Beats-y, easy tempo, kind of twisted and hallucinatory, even dreamy, pretty drugged out. Jesus Trip also does some punky stuff - I first heard of JT from Pat Duncan.  ***
Cheb i Sabbah  Alla Al 'Hbab: The Hydrophobia Remix (track 7) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting La Ghriba: La Kahena Remixed  Six Degrees

Mic break between Sets 3 & 4. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 4 (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Urban Sax  Urban Sax Part 1 (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Urban Sax  FDC  Slightly menacing sci-fi feel at the beginning, but becomes almost golden & almost organ music-like, slow, best at moderate volume, repeating harmonic tone / theme almost throughout. Live, they do some intense performance art.  ***
Nadja  Clinodactyl (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Bodycage  Profound Lore  The masters of golden heaviness are baaaack. This piece: slow, dark, quiet, even peaceful, gradually becomes slightly active, some way-buried soft vocals, even a mad-church feel for a bit.  ***
Flaming Fire  Celesticide Anthem (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Aleph Nought: Transmission One  Perhaps Transparent  Classical organ-like, but definitely spaced.

End of show mic break. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.
