Accordion, didgeridoo, trombone, voice and found metal pieces all blend together to make something peaceful and glorious - and all without any electronic processing. ***

rhBand Track 4 (San Francisco 6/21/97) (Listen: Pop-up) First Tone Drunken Fish Slow and quiet start lead to heavier electronics - and help set up Speaker Swinging, which follows.

Gordon Monahan Speaker Swinging (Side A) (Listen: Pop-up) Speaker Swinging GM (Gordon Monahan) Imagine a darkened stage. Then imagine performers on that stage swinging illuminated speakers "helicopter-style in three 22 foot diameter circles." The resulting performance and soundscape are really spectacular. I've been hoping to play this piece again for years and, now that it has reappeared in the FMU library, I can.

Gordon Monahan puts it, in part, this way:

"Speaker Swinging grew out of a desire to animate the typical electronic music concert and, in effect, to realise the loudspeaker as a valid electronic music instrument in itself."

"Speaker Swinging was first inspired by hearing Trans Am automobiles cruising on a hot summer night with Heavy Metal blaring out of the windows. As the cars cruised by, there was that fleeting moment of wet, fluid music, when one tonality melts into another."

Pat Novak, For Hire Dixie Gillian Originally broadcast November 24, 1946. (no label) Jack Webb plays the severely down and out waterfront detective / do anything for money Pat Novak in this, the cult series that really launched his career. It is this series that resulted in his getting the role he is known for, as Sergeant Joe Friday on the radio and then TV series Dragnet.

This episode is the first in the Pat Novak series, which was known for its frequently absurdist and sharp one-liners.

The Jesus Trip The Problem (track 5) (Listen: Pop-up) The Morning Star Bottled Rag Beats-y, easy tempo, kind of twisted and hallucinatory, even dreamy, pretty drugged out. Jesus Trip also does some punky stuff - I first heard of JT from Pat Duncan. ***

Nadja Clinodactyl (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up) "Clinodactyl (track 1)" by "Nadja" Bodycage Profound Lore The masters of golden heaviness are baaaack. This piece: slow, dark, quiet, even peaceful, gradually becomes slightly active, some way-buried soft vocals, even a mad-church feel for a bit. ***
