Artist Track Album Label Comments Special

Set 1 (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Alan Lamb  Primal Image (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Primal Image  Dorobo  Recorded by placing contact microphones on telephone lines strung across the Australian countryside & capturing the sounds they made as the wires moved in the wind. Starts like deep space solar wind sci-fi, some tension in the music at times, occasional snapping of the wires, sometimes beautiful, reminds me of Ligeti and Kubrick's movie 2001, also reminds me of some works by Gordon Monahan.

Sounds very dramatic at louder volumes.

rhBand  san francisco may 2000 (track 3) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting (take one)  ARG  Like being on the highway and feeling the steady throbbing of the motor, with other cars occasionally going by, sci-fi feel comes in the middle, best track on the CD.  ***

Mic break between Sets 1 & 2. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 2: the old radio show portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Johnny Modero: Pier 23  Find Pete Sutro   Favoriting originally broadcast June 19, 1947  (no label)  Plot, shmot. There is one, but who cares?

In between stints as Pat Novak For Hire, Jack Webb starred in this other short lived cult classic, which was essentially a carbon copy of it - and it was playing Pat Novak and spitting out all those snappy one-liners that launched Webb's career. And the fact that John Garfield, Gale Gordon, and one of the great radio actors, William Conrad, are all in this episode certainly doesn't hurt any.

This episode: a story of seedy people, murder, a face job and, oh yes, amnesia.

Speaking of desperately hard boiled snappy lines, this episode has them in spades:

"Down here, the only sign people pay attention to is rigor mortis."

"He had one of those far away looks you couldn't follow with a road map."

"His eyes were the color of Saturday night on a week-old jag, and he was so chunky you figured he'd be harder to move than an icebox through a basement window"

"She was about 25, with a pair of legs that woulda made a silkworm turn over and write a fan letter."

"I felt about as safe as an alligator walking through a handbag factory."

"You got enough worries to start a peace conference."

"She was wearing a pair of rose colored lounging pajamas, and I've seen baked potatoes with looser jackets."

Mic break between Sets 2 & 3. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 3: darker, and even metronomic. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Maxime de la Rochefoucauld  Reflux Statik (track 3) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Orchestraki  Storyboard  Quiet, and spaced at times. They (he, actually: Maxime Rioux) have come up with all their own percussive instruments, and set them to be activated by "inaudible frequencies".
Helios Creed  Intro (Deep Blue Love Vacuum) (track 1: faded out at about -1:00) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Deep Blue Love Vacuum  Noiseville  Deep synthy knells, animal grunts in the background, and you could even call it druggy psych. The rest of the CD has some really great psych rock.
Urban Sax  On The Time (track 6) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Spiral  FDC  Deep and warm mix of tenor and baritone saxes, best track on the CD.
Magic Carpathians Project  Distance (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Konzert w Centrum Sztuki I Techniki Japonskiej "Manggha" w Krakowie  Magic Carpathians Project  Easy, ambient metronomic theme.  ***

Mic break between Sets 3 & 4. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 4: long and mostly quiet, from peaceful to slightly throbbing to reverberant. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Phil Niblock  Sax Mix (CD 3, track 3) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Touch Three  Touch  Treated alto, tenor & baritone saxes, gently shifting & slightly throbbing tones of them, peaceful, best on this CD. The enire 3 CD set is pretty spectacular.  ***
Nadja  Ossification (track 3) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting bodycage  Profound Lore  Quiet and reverberant, soft tones start us off, it gradually builds and becomes a bit heavier until a long and quieting down last part.

The title of this piece and of the CD itself is based on the rare congenital disorder called Fibrodysplasia Ossifican Progressiva, in which the body's muscle gradually becomes rigid and ossifies - turning the victim's body into a rigid cage.

Mic break between Sets 4 & 5. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 5: 2 different sides of love. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Regine Crespin  Sur les Lagunes (track 4) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Regine Crespin: Berlioz- Les Nuits d'ete, Ravel- Sheherazade  Decca  Electrifying, luminous, and mournful: her love is dead.

"Ma belle amie est morte: je pleurerai toujours." Translation: "My love is dead, I shall weep forever."

The quality of the transfer to CD is amazing.

***
Django Reinhardt  Confessin' (track 7) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting The Great Artistry Of Django Reinhardt  FiveFour  The first 8 tracks on this CD are the last ones he recorded. Note that he wound up on an electric guitar.  ***
