Back in 1979, I made the decision to accept Dr Demento as my personal savior. Since then, with the help of his apostles Spike, Al, Stan and Black-Eyed Susan Brown, I have made it my mission to spread the Gospel of the Firesign and the Word of the Waller. Please join me and my fellow seekers as we find the Wisdom we crave and the Rapture we deserve. A new sermon every Tuesday (and NO collection plate!).

Favoriting August 11, 2009: Wheels vol 2

Listen to this show: MP3 - 128K | Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Year Comments
Philip Austin  LORD JIM CRAPPINGTON   Favoriting Roller Maidens from Outer Space    I could swear I saw this on late-night TV in LA back in the 70s... except I've never really been in LA (except for that day at Disneyland, which may also have been a dream). I guess there's something universal about car commercials.
Neal Gladstone  DODGE DART   Favoriting     Neal is originally from Stillwater OK and went to the U of Chicago, where he majored in the Beatles. He has a skillion albums and currently lives in Eugene, OR. I myself learned to drive in my dad's 1965 Dodge Dart. The thing was indestructible and it took a Newark tow truck truck two tries to do it.
KGOD  BILLY BOB JOE BROWN'S CONTRUCTION VEHICLES   Favoriting     From the straight-to-video KGOD with Dabney Coleman (see last week)
Kitt, the Amazing Car of Tomorrow  KNIGHT RIDER'S XMAS   Favoriting     A spin-off from the TV series 'Knight Rider' starring David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, Do-Gooder and featuring William Daniels as the voice of KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand), the amazing sarcastic talking car of tyhe future. I'm not sure if these are the voices on this track. A brief attempt was made to make 'Knight Rider 2009', but it ended up a bloody stump. You can probably still find reruns in syndication. Check local listings for something better to see.
Da Yoopers  RUSTY CHEVROLET   Favoriting Culture Shock  1987  A Yooper is someone from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (called U.P. - get it?). These guys are from picturesque Ishpeming and formed the band in 1975. They're still at it, too (their most recent album '21st Century Yoopers in Space' was in 2006). Go to their website (www.dayoopers.com) and play 'Guess da Doo Hickey.' Don't miss the Tourist Trap & Museum and the Yooper Hall of Fame (which has no one you've ever heard of). Then go wash your hands.
George Carlin  CARS AND DRIVING   Favoriting     George always knows what to say.

MARCHE DE CLOCHE   Favoriting

Steven Banks  BUCKLE UP BABY   Favoriting     I could be wrong here, but... It seems this is the same Steven Banks who is an accomplished actor, writer and performer. Friend of Penn Gilette, head writer of Spongebob Squarepants, Jimmy Neutron, Cat/Dog and Hi Hi Puffy Yum Yum. If you saw 'The Aristocrats' you will never forget his performance as Billy the Mime.
Pete Cicero  TRAFFIC ACCIDENT   Favoriting     His claim to fame is that he co-wrote (with Martin Margules - who is better known as musician and film producer Johnny Legend) Freddie Blassie's classic 'Pencil-Neck Geek'
4 Jokers  TRANSFUSION   Favoriting     Allegedly features Jimmy Drake (AKA Nervous Norvus, a former truck driver). I quote from Wikipedia: "Contrary to popular belief, Drake was never a member of the Four Jokers. He was very shy and even turned down a chance to perform 'Transfusion' on the Ed Sullivan Show. He only recorded sporadically thereafter for a series of independent labels like Embee and Big Ben, up to 1960. Nervous Norvus died in 1968 of cirrhosis of the liver, aged 56."
Credibilty Gap  EDITORIAL REPLY   Favoriting     Featuring David "Squiggy" Lander. David has been stricken with Multiple Sclerosis since 1984, which limits him to doing voice work and he is very involved in the fight for MS.
Couch Flambeau  WE'LL GO THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD TOGETHER   Favoriting Day the Music Died  1985  Originally formed in 1980 in Greenville WI by high school friends Jay Tiller (guitar) and Ron Faiola (drums). Their first shows were in 1981 in Milwaukee under the name Couch Potatoes. They decided to change the name of the band and decided on Couch Flambeau after seeing a Canadian fire prevention film where a cat goes looking for 'mouse flambeau.'
Milo Trembley  ROAD KILL   Favoriting     Born as James Lee Reeves in Mercer Island, WA. Performs as Professor Milo, Marriage Counselor. And has done time at Farm Aid with his good friend Willie Nelson
Blatz Beer and Dodge  SAFETY PSA   Favoriting     MIxed by my friend Jerry Nutter
Ed Herlihy  PONTIAC FOR 1948   Favoriting
Deluxe Brothers  HARVE KIRSCHNER MOTORS   Favoriting     Another LA TV nightmare commercial
Paul Revere and the Raiders  PONTIAC GTO   Favoriting     Started as a quick commercial for Pontiac, soon became a hit single. Or maybe it was the other way around.
Casey Anderson  SPORTS CAR SONG (Even if the Weather Be Good)   Favoriting The Bag I'm In  1962  Real name Charles H. Anderson. Born in Chicago and grew up in Oklahoma and Alabama. He recorded 10 LPs from 1960 until 1976 on the Atco label and others. This album, "The Bag I'm In" is mostly made up of his versions of traditional folk songs and he does a real fine job of it. We'll be hearing more.

NEIGHBORS DANCE   Favoriting

Volkswagen  BEETLE LOVE   Favoriting     Late 60s commercial
Anonymous  KEEP YOUR HAND OFF MY CAR   Favoriting     From Irwin's Incorrect Music collection. For a funny non-related video, go to http://www.livevideo.com/video/D1A5DF3DDDDF4594917D78157E459553/keep-your-hands-off-my-car-.aspx
Will Halley  HE'D HAVE TO GET UNDER ... TO FIX UP HIS AUTOMOBILE   Favoriting     I think this song originated with buggy-whip lobbyists. Google this guy to find out when Halley's Comet will return (spoiler: 2061)
Benny Bell  WILL YOU LOVE ME WHEN MY FLIVVER IS A WRECK   Favoriting     Also known simply as the "Automobile Song." Benny is, of course, best known for "Shaving Cream," but has a few hundred songs to his credit. He is known to record in English, Yiddish and Hebrew and many combinations of the three and many of his songs are of dubious morality. I actually met him at a Dr Demento show at the Bottom line in 1980 and he was absolutly adorable. He died in 1999 at age 93.
Tommy Odim  SHE WON'T TURN OVER FOR ME   Favoriting     I'm guessinig that he was a one-hit wonder (assuming this was actually a hit). I found many references to this song as being included in something, but no artist info. Listeners?
Fields Nord  OLD ZEKE PERKINS   Favoriting     This one's been covered to death (for example "A Ford Song" by A Flivver - 1918). Nord (1911-87) was a member of the Bogtrotters in the 30s and 40s.
Laughing Cal Stewart  UNCLE JOSH BUYS AN AUTOMOBILE   Favoriting     Stewart was born in Charlotte County, VA in 1856 (died 1919) and claims to have been a friend of Mark Twain (he'd have been 20 when Twain died) and Will Rogers. He made a small fortune off his Uncle Josh Wethersby charactor.
Chevrolet  SEE THE USA   Favoriting     Yep - that's Dinah Shore. See her here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGZvQoPxhNs
Treniers  GET OUTTA THE CAR!   Favoriting     One of the side effects of the car was its part in the expanding population. back seats became the new motel rooms to all to all those who had nowhere else to go. And while much of the play was at least consensual, there were many who did not play fair. And yes, we still call it rape. Meet the Treniers: Cliff and Claude (later joined by younger brother Milton). They were responsible for some of the earliest rock n roll on TV, on Martin & Lewis' Colgate Comedy Hour in 1954. Here's a You-Tube sample http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbNAFJPVaYk

Music behind DJ:
Barry Tuckwell

RONDO   Favoriting

Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports  CAN'T GET MY MOTOR TO START   Favoriting   1979  If you missed it the first time I played it (pod #1-4/14/09), this is mostly the Carla Bley Band at work here. Karen Kraft gets the award as the bewildered sweetheart.
