Since then, with the help of his apostles Spike, Al, Stan and Black-Eyed Susan Brown, I have made it my mission to spread the Gospel of the Firesign and the Word of the Waller. Sollie Paul "Tex" Williams (8/13/17-10/11/85) was a product of Ramsey IL (in the middle of nowhere). He started out with Spade Cooley's Band, but did not get along with Mr Cooley (neither did anyone else) and when he left he took the band with him. That's why the Western Caravan sounds so much like the Cooley Band, with those distinctive twin fiddles (think Allman Brothers with Dickie Betts and Duane Allman). |

Vocals by Meredith Blake and Johnny Bond. Ayres on violin fronted this sort of generic whitebread orchestra (ala Welk and Lombardo). He went on to become the music director for Perry Como on TV. Born in Milwaukee on Xmas Eve in 1910, died 9/5/69 when hit by a car. |

By virtue of the Murray-Kauffman Act of 1899, virtually every song recorded from 1900-1910 had to include either Billy Murray or Irving Kauffman. Kauffman worked in the Biz for over 60 years, often teaming up with his brothers Jack and Phil (oddly, as the Kauffman Brothers) or with other big stars (like Billy Murray or Al Jolson). Had the habit so bad he even recorded under assumed names as well as in his sleep and for 30 years after his death (though these recording sound sort of muffled...) |

They did vaudeville routines, ciomic duets and "Coon Songs" (which featured whites only in blackface. Even black performers had to appear in blackface, assuming they were allowed to appear anywhere at all) |

Aileen was born Maude Elsie Aileen Muggeridge in Chicago and began her stage careeer with her brother Stanley (as Stanley and Aileen). When her brother left the act, she simply reversed the names. Recorded prodigiously throughout the naughties, including many blues recordings under the pseudonym Mamie Jones for the Black Swan Label (which mainly specialized in blues and 'race' recordings). Billy we've already met. |

| Peerless Quartet |
SINCE MOTHER GOES TO MOVIE SHOWS

Before 1906, they were known as the Columbia Quartet (after the Columbia label, until a contract dispute). Members were: Henry Burr, Albert Campbell, Steve Porter (replaced by Arthur Collins in 1909) and Frank Stanley (died in 1910, replaced by John C Meyers). They remained together loosely until about 1928. |

Cliff was born in Hannibal, MO in 1896 and made a name for himself jazzing up hits of the day (which were sorely in need of it) as well as a slew of novelty numbers. Single-handedly started the Great Ukulele Infestation of the 20s (which, along with raccoon coats, was blamed for the Other Depression). Of course, best known as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in 'Pinocchio' as well as one of the Crows in 'Dumbo.' |

CHAUTAUQUA AT PUMPKIN CENTER

Chautauqua was an adult education movement in the US (mostly in the rural South, popular in the late 1800s through the 1920s) and featured teachers, musicians, stage performrs and other specialties. It brought entertainment and culture to whole communities that might not have otherwise had a chance (think Boneroo). |

Lord Invader was Rupert Westmore Grant from Trinidad. This is the foillow-up to his biggest hit, "Rum & Coca Cola" which in turn is based on a Martinique folk song "L'Annie Passee" (which was written by fellow Calypsonian Lionel Belasco and later stolen by Morey Amsterdam and turned into a big hit by the Andrews Sisters. Lawsuits ensued). |

I WANT A HOT DOG FOR MY ROLL

Jodie Edwards & Susie Hawthorne were husband and wife for some 40 years. Butterbeans played the fool to Susie's elegant sophistication. Much of their material was too racy for release by the Okeh label. They were mentors to many early black performers (like Moms Mabley) and despite their recorded bickering were ecstatically happliy married well into their 60s, when death did them part. |

One of the first white performers to do blues numbers, Bernard performed in blackface throughout the 20s. Also known as "the Singing Comedian" he performed many duets with comtemporary stars (Ernie Hair, Jimmy Durante, Verne Dalhart, etc). It wazs Verne Dalhart who persuaded him to record "Hesitation Blues" with the Goofus Five, widely regarded as one of the first Western Swing recordings. |

LAUGHING GIRL HAS HER PICTURE TOOK

Half of the vaudeville duo the Olson Sisters (with her sister Eleanora - who was 19 years her senior) performed for about 20 years together. She was born in the US of Norwegian parents and they were extremely popular in the US (mostly the midwest). Equally adept at comedy, gospel and popular numbers, they had a very long career of recordings and appearances. |
