Listener comments!

  11:04pm
Joe:

I fully expect this one 3 hour block of radio to completely redeem the hellish year that just passed. Get to it EFD!
  11:04pm
kamper:

First comment? Can it be?

And Pylon to boot.

Beginnng of a great show.
  11:07pm
john:

Do the Purdie Shuffle!
  11:09pm
Joe:

I cannot wait for his Michael Shelly interview. I might even get up early and listen to it live.
  11:12pm
efd:

Joe, you've got a few weeks to rest up for that Purdie interview - you can do it!

kamper, so close to first comment. A for effort, B for actually being the second comment.

Hi John! Hope you're feeling better.
  11:14pm
kamper:

That's me, the sad owner of a failed firstie.
  11:15pm
G:

C for mediocre G. a chord progression!
  11:18pm
cissy davis:

evan,,happy new year...how was your xmas? did you get anything great?? efd could you please play something for the late great brittney murphy? may god bless her sole...thnx evan=)-)
  11:21pm
Joe:

wow I thought Cybotron was way... not as old as it is. And I thought the name was a reference to Transformers. Which it actually predates by 4 years. That's what I get for making assumptions...

And the more I look at my Bernard Purdie semi-pledge, the more it looks like a sad lie.
  11:21pm
brendan:

Great stuff EFD. Keep it going. Gotta leave the computer, but I'll have FMU on my radio/ipod.
  11:28pm
bennett4senate:

aw man, I was all like I Gotta Go to Bed but no WAY now, EFD, FYI mom is still on xmas vacay and I herd oneoftha guys in Cybotron was a Vietnam vet (heavy). so up late more workin itis! count it down bruthah
  11:29pm
brownhat:

count it down!
  11:32pm
bennett4senate:

yeah yeah get it DEATH! this was a great one for this year, #1 is gotta be epic
  11:32pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Wow--Death is not #1?!--Must be the Nuggest box then
  11:34pm
efd:

guess again, MftLC - Nuggets box is in the compilations category, not this one.
  11:34pm
john:

Thanks! On the mend.

And please tell me #1 was Sylvester and the Hot Band. Just to hear him screech covers of Southern Man and Whiter Shade of Pale. Srsly.
  11:35pm
Joe:

I KNOW WHAT #1 IS.

I'm not telling. I'll write it down on a piece of paper, fold it over, and we'll see if I'm right in a few minutes.
  11:37pm
Amanda:

"Nuggest" is a satisfying typo. (No mockery meant.)
  11:40pm
cissy davis:

efd---could you please play something wonderfull for the late great brittney murphy,ty again evan=)=)
  11:40pm
Joe:

NAILED it.
  11:41pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Excellent choice
  11:42pm
Laurie:

toni daytona: I played that Skeeter Davis song and ate some fried chicken in honor of Brittany Murphy.
  11:42pm
efd:

"Cissy," do you even listen to the show?
  11:42pm
Joe:

It's even more satisfying if you're privvy to the fact that in certain suburban circles, marijuana buds are known as "nugget"... and the best amongst the nuggets are the "nuggest"
  11:45pm
cissy davis:

efd,,,you know i NEVER miss your show,,,,,,
  11:45pm
Channeling Cissy...:

There's a show that goes with the comments?????? What channel is it on my local cable system. so I can watch!!
  11:45pm
Amanda:

Whyever would you imagine I would not be privy to that?

Hey, remind me to pick up that "Never Learned to Drive" comp, btw.
  11:46pm
nec13:

Speaking of Big Star, I've recently rediscovered Like Flies on Sherbert. Tremendous album.
  11:46pm
Joe:

Also, Davies, remember to not run out of time. Clock is ticking. Tick tock tick tock tick tock.
  11:47pm
jeff-m:

just ordered the Cicero Park. Always loved the song Emma so much. Thanks!
  11:47pm
Cavalier Guy:

Just take some of the next shift.
  11:49pm
darkhorse:

Great playlist! I'm going to look into all these new releases. Just one question, what's the looped song you played in between?
  11:50pm
G:

Someone? :-P
  11:51pm
efd:

paging Joe...
  11:51pm
Joe:

It issssss *drumroll*

a sample of "Saturday Night Live" by the Lordz of Brooklyn, which is in turn a sample of the main riff from "American Woman" by the Guess Who.
  11:52pm
Joe:

and that will be the last time I do that this decade.

And I'll gladly do it for a decade more!

Any more than that would be getting a little ridiculous.
  11:53pm
The Guess Who:

That is The Guess Who to you, bub.
  11:54pm
Joe:

I'm surprised I get corrected on my capitalization rather than my assertion that the decade is over this year rather than next.

I'm also surprised that Wolverine is now the spokesman for -The- Guess Who.
  11:55pm
The Guess Who:

We're just practicing being cocky.
  11:55pm
cissy davis:

evan--i know that you're doing the best of 2009 but i thought you mite just sqeeze in a little tribute to brittney,,,,i'm sorry=/
  11:56pm
efd:

actually the song is "Saturday Night Fever," not "Saturday Night Live."

I know, you're out of practice.
  11:56pm
Amanda:

FYI, not going to that Upper Crust show was in my top 10 worst things I did in 2009. And following Dave Hill on Twitter was in my top 10 best.
  11:56pm
G:

Holy Kimoley
  11:59pm
Amanda:

Guess Lordz of Brooklyn aren't as vigilant as The Guess Who when it comes to the comments board.
  11:59pm
Joe:

aw... man.

I blame the rap lyric I've been reciting to anyone who'll listen for the past 2 weeks.

"We keepin' saturday night live, like Tracy Morgan"

FAIL.
  12:00am
Michael from the Left Coast:

U said it EFD!
  12:00am
Joe:

Man we say that every night! Sheeeeeeit...
  12:05am
cissy davis:

well efd i shall bother you no longer have a great & safe new year..see you next week,,,keep on rockin,,,love ya & nite nite!!
  12:10am
cissy spaceick:

pritty plz play hannah montana,,,she was top ten to,,,ty!!!

jes' funnin, a-bones rocked
  12:11am
John from Otisville:

cryptovision records is still around?! Is this the same NYC lable of the Black Orchids and Donner Party
  12:15am
Joe:

I have a friend who insists on comparing Art Brut to The Hold Steady. I'm extremely ambivalent about it.
  12:17am
efd:

Joe - I can understand the motivation to make that comparison, but I don't buy into it.

John - not sure about that, but I'm going to guess it is.
  12:18am
Amanda:

Classes the Hold Steady way up, that's for sure. And I say this as a proponent of the Hold Steady.

Cryptovision Records was relaunched with that particular release, says the internet.
  12:22am
Joe:

Number 2?! Woooooow.

Although i guess I shouldn't be surprised, I've probably put them on every mix I've made since you started playing them.

Oh, Taylor Hanson... *swoon*
  12:22am
randy in NC:

and #1 is, let me guess....
  12:22am
toni daytona:

efd i hope you had a terrific xmas..i sure did
  12:23am
efd:

i'm afraid that if your guess for #1 is wrong that it'll be something I missed
  12:27am
john from otisville:

Amazing show tonight! the ultimate mix tape. Reminds me of comp lps in the 70's-"Sound of the Summer-73, 74", etc. It had "Dancin' in the Moonlight", "Night Chicago Died", etc.
  12:29am
Casey Kasem:

Don't make me come out of an uptempo fuckin record with a fuckin dog dying. jeez!

Yeah evan, I am the measure of a true pro!!!!
  12:31am
efd:

thanks John, glad you're enjoying it!

Randy, was this your guess?

Ohai, Toni Daytona.
  12:31am
Amanda:

Aw. This CERTAINLY dredges up all MY memories of the nightmare that was 2009. Yay!!!!
  12:31am
Pete:

EFD:

Listener Pete here . . .

Stunned . .. Absolutely Stunned! I thought the Bare Wires LP would be your # 1 but I will wait for your top singles list
  12:31am
randy in NC:

OK I'm wrong, maybe it'll be the #1 single...
  12:32am
Joe:

Dark horse!!! From nowhere! Takes the gold! LOVE IT.

They are the Dinosaurs and they're ready for fun.
  12:35am
bjorn:

ahhhhhh FU cyclone60.com for having sound and upsetting my eyeballs. great track. hope i can find the album elsewhere...
  12:36am
"asterisks":

aka Earworm Honorable Mentions...
  12:37am
Joe:

Mr. Bjorn, may I direct you to:

http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/Cyclone60
  12:38am
toni daytona:

evan--have a safe and healthy new year,,,with love toni,,,cissy & rachel =)=)
  12:38am
efd:

@"asterisks" - exactly.
  12:40am
Joe:

You know, no matter how long this song is stuck in your head, it's completely impossible to read the title out loud in the right cadence. Seriously, it's a total bitch.
  12:40am
Joe:

yes. YES.
  12:42am
efd:

Joe, I knew you'd appreciate this.

Toni/Cissy/Rachel happy new year to all of you as well.
  12:44am
Taking Attendance:

But Tex must have fallen asleep before 11
  12:44am
Joe:

It's possible I appreciate it to the point where "appreciate" no longer cuts it as a proper descriptive term. So F-ing good dude.
  12:47am
Ken From Hyde Park:

I've heard this one from The Clean before. Nice song. Tom Scharpling liked the DC Snipers. Was that 2009 or 2008?
  12:49am
efd:

Ken, I'm pretty sure there was a new DC Snipers release earlier this year - they also had an album out a couple of years ago.
  12:51am
Laurie:

I knew Linda Linda was going to be in this grouping.
  12:52am
A:

A very emphatic friend of mine who lives in Marin County has been pestering me for a year to listen to MC Yogi, with whom she takes yoga classes. I resisted (this felt like an acceptable choice, based on her many questionable choices). But through EFD, she got to me.
Bonus ramble: great cover of Linda Linda Linda; the movie is even better.
  12:52am
Joe:

This was my summer BBQ jam. Marty Mac spun this ish too.

We sung it in Engrish though.
  12:53am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Why is Andrew WK not immensely popular?
  12:56am
Joe:

Because people think they're "cool" and need to get over themselves.

My buddy goes to law school with a guy who was a journalist before he switched careers. So he notices a factual inaccuracy in his legal textbook and emails the editor about it. He gets a response and starts a correspondence. Eventually, the editor recommends the guy have dinner with his son, who lives in NY and runs a nightclub.

His son was Andrew WK.
  12:57am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Joe--that's hilarious
What club does Andrew WK run in NYC?
  12:58am
toni daytona:

efd,,cissy d. wants to know if you could pay tribute to the late brittney murphy on next week's show??
  12:59am
randy in NC:

To me that Clean tune sounds like Neil Young some.
  1:03am
Joe:

Santo's Party House. I was as shocked as anyone but apparently the guy is like a polymath. The guy who had dinner with him is one of the smartest people I've ever met, and HE said that Andrew W.K. was one of the smartest people HE's ever met.

and I -will- somehow party with him some day.
  1:22am
toni daytona:

i guess cissy does'nt get her wish,,,or maybe evan is speechless..
  1:24am
lisa jane p:

Evan! I wish you a great big, shiny, happy New Year.
  1:27am
rooting:

toni, cissy, and rachel -- hot girl-on-girl-on-girl action!
  1:28am
a never-was Sweet single:

Nether Land Wig Wam Glam Wham!
  1:30am
efd:

Hey LJP! I wish the same to you and that Grammy-nominated husband of yours!

Toni/Cissy/Rachel, I'm not really sure why you're fixated on this Brittany Murphy thing, but with all due respect my program is really not the go-to venue for a tribute.
  1:45am
lisa jane p:

Your show is my go-to venue for a tribute to great music. Thanks for bringing it all year long.
  1:53am
Laurie:

yesssssssssssssssssss
  1:56am
Joe:

I'm compiling a mental list of people who would warrant an EFD tribute. It's an awesome list, but it's very short.

Top 12 EFD shows of the year:
Runner up- July 21, 2009: Pylon/Randy Bewley tribute
11-October 13, 2009: dedicated to Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack: a big part of why you listen to my show.
10-June 16, 2009: the tale of the Ronnie James Dio Lil' Bed n' Breakfast
9-July 28, 2009: happy 30th anniversary Highway To Hell!
8- June 23, 2009: working without a nap |
7-August 25, 2009: my Guess Who itch still isn't scratched
6-September 1, 2009: OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY live set! plus: efd meets his Waterloo
5-January 20, 2009: president. obama.
4-March 10, 2009: marathon week 2 with co-host PSEU BRAUN!
3- March 24, 2009: CYCLONE 60 live set!
2- This one
1- November 17, 2009: special 24-Hr Marathon Show with co-host BILL KELLY!

My list is not by any means objective and is heavily biased toward shows where I was doing something awesome whilst listening to them. I do believe, however, they stand strongly on their own.

Happy New Year.
  1:56am
Pete:

EFD:

FYI. The Poison Arrows are reformed into a new band called The Biters. Play same type of music. You can go to their myspace page whenever you get a chance
  11:29am
Archibald Wanker:

Great show efd, have a great 2010, and let's have a few more lost punky classics
  12:15pm
randy in NC:

Not surprisingly, I guessed right for the #1 single!
