Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from April 19, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Slug Guts  Live in the WFMU studio   Favoriting engineered by Ruaraidh Sanachan    Two excellent exports from sunny Brisbane, Australia visiting Brian's show today. Up first, Blank Realm who create a levitating atmosphere built on improvisations that focus sharp into excellent, tuneful songs reminiscent of a grimier early Pere Ubu. Following up are fellow locals Slug Guts, who wage serious sax-inflicted junkyard reverb chaos with the spirit of Rowland S. Howard hovering close above. They recently did a split single with the Primitive Calculators and a full LP called "Howlin' Gang" on Sacred Bones records and are a stomping, Stooged-out, snarling sextet in the live forum. Hear both bands live today after they cris-cross the USA on their first ever tour. Song titles: Glory Holes / Chrome Crucifix / Drownin' Man / Walkin' Round / Blacksports / Howlin' / Never Leavin' / (interview) / Double Suicide. Check out sacredbones.com, and the Mp3s from this session will be up on the Free Music Archive!   3:26pm
BT:

Rained in for RSD ! I know, lame....but didnt wanna go out.
  3:27pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I felt the same way, totally unmotivated.
  3:30pm
glenn:

it was a crappy day out, that's for sure. the guy at my local video store was playing graveyard today. great band. hint hint.
  3:32pm
Pete Moss:

I went and everything I wanted was sold out. But I see I can get it on ebay from a hundred different people for five times what they paid for it.
  3:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

that's the entrepenurial spirit

  3:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@JS: Shit, you're right! I was wondering what that could be!
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

They have a website for RSD:
http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues

I didn't go out because of weather, but this year on FMU was the first time I heard of Record Store Day--I thought it was a NYC thing and didn't realize they do it all over the world! But they WILL have it next year, so remember next April!
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

LOVE this Alice song! I learned about this from an earlier show, Brian. Then I found out someone sang this song for an earlier Hoof & Mouth.
  3:41pm
Pete Moss:

RSD was really fun--nerdy crowds, live bands, and where I went, Tom Scharling DJing.
  3:44pm
glenn:

has michael shelley heard this promo?
  3:44pm
Rich Russo:

Can I have my ipod back now?
  3:46pm
randy in NC:

re. RSD, the Raveonettes were supposed to be where I went, but they cancelled. I guess they got nervous about tornados...
  3:46pm
Tornado:

Hey Brian, Can't believe you played Staten Island's own, infamous Terrible Tim — wrongly credited at DJ Rick Russo. If you ever get a chance to watch Staten Island cable when the Terrible one is on, it might blow your mind what this guy gets away with on TV. Thought you might be interested.
  3:49pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

such a nice tune
  3:50pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

that one AND this one
  3:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: The best part about Good Morning Kisses--they help you all the day through.
But perhaps they shouldn't end on a preposition---
  3:51pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'll have to try that, Matt, instead of a gruff "c ya" every damn day!
  3:53pm
Tornado:

Unless you were there when the doors opened, willing to get into crowded shoving matches, seemed like the best RSD stuff was snatched up. The best part of all for me, were the bands in certain stores. Curse collector scum.
  3:55pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Dan Friel of Parts and Labor did a solo set in a local store (P&L played later that night). I would have liked to have been there. But...gray and cold make me rather inert.
  3:59pm
pierre:

Bonsoir all
  4:03pm
BT:

greets pierre
  4:06pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

awesome drone/exp set!
  4:08pm
Pete Moss:

I just saw some scenes from philosophy of the world last night with Irwin hosting discussion. He was telling us afterwards how when BMG, who do a lot of Broadway albums, rereleased it in 1999 (a decision made solely by their new president) the marketing people refused to promote it. And now it's going to Broadway. Oh the irony, or something.
  4:10pm
yair yona (tel aviv):

good evening everyone
  4:11pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

hello yair....pull up a chair and listen to Brian with us.

@dc pat: mchnegndrms are great, however! ROCK IT Sarcofago!
  4:18pm
BT:

hey all, details on the stream prob?
  4:19pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

the 20k stream had buffering issues, and flash disappeared for about a minute during sacrofago....seems to be back now
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Flash player's fine. Streams have been blocked at my workplace for weeks so I can't check for you.

(Where's Hillary on Internet FREEDOM when you REALLY need it?!!)
  4:20pm

  4:21pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

  4:23pm
Pete Moss:

128k no interruption at all
  4:25pm
yair yona (tel aviv):

it makes metal music nonsense with all the buffering ;) looks like it's solved since i moved to the 20k real
  4:25pm
BT:

Cool, thanks for the reports everybody./ You never know...
  4:26pm
powiva:

never no problems nahthin
  4:28pm
Pauli Guy:

Wow, is this some real fasten-your-seatbelts-for-take-off stuff?
  4:28pm
pierre:

whoa… that was refreshing !
  4:29pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

sounded like Zond would be a great live experience
  4:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

@yair: metal music (machine) nonsense, whether the artist intended it or not :)

@DCE: What slackers need is an Internet canteen--you pour some Internet in, and you can pour it out whenever and wherever you need some! And when you're going through airport security? Just pour it in your hair and wear it in!
  4:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

u r strnge mtt
  4:36pm
yair yona (tel aviv):

wow! they sound incredible!
  4:48pm
yair yona (tel aviv):

they remind me a bit of Crystal Antlers, in the time of their first ep. this is mind blowing and ears melting,
  4:49pm
Marmalade Kitty:

This is great!!

Wow, Ive just google searched Images: for Wes Wilson.. Wowzer!! Hundreds of thumbnail Trippy artwork!!
  4:53pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

  4:57pm

Rockin' Foo!
  5:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BT: Oh snap! Most of the bands where I know the hometown always seems to be in NSW or Victoria--never realized the GBs also were, so thank you Brian!
  5:30pm
BT:

Can I just add here that Ruaraidh and Ernie are two of the most awesome engineers in the world? These bands sound sublime....
  5:31pm
Billy Jam:

Sounds really good....Great live acts every week on Brian Turner's show - impressive!
  5:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Shout out to Ruaraidh and Ernie and all the other fine engineers on Brian's live sets!
  5:36pm
jaycjay:

There are plenty of bands "without a Myspace" now. And even more with accounts they haven't logged in to in months.
  5:40pm
BT:

I think some temporarily delete theirs if they're coming in from overseas so customs doesn't look up dates and hassle em.
  5:43pm
jaycjay:

Others have abandoned the site just like the majority of non-musicians. It's understandable, because in terms of usability myspace now completely sucks. But, doing booking, it's inconvenient that there's no one place now to communicate with bands. Bandcamp seems to be becoming the go-to site, though.
  5:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@jaycjay: I didn't notice this at first--but is "jaycjay" now the preferred name for "JCJ"?
  5:45pm
jaycjay:

Yeah, Matt, for now anyway!
  5:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Not for customs reasons, I hope? ;)
  5:50pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm seeing Echo & The Bunnymen in DC! Hope this will be a great tour.

And for New Yorkers, the Bowery Ballroom--I've heard so many great bands announced on this show that play there.
  5:56pm
Marc in Liverpool:

cool
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Slug Guts and Blank Realm!
Brian: Another kickass live show! Have your live shows ever been anything less!
  9:12pm
Volara:

two Brissy bands in the house! Blank Realm are one of the best live bands i've seen and this recording comes pretty close to capturing it.
  3:56pm
Violet Times:

Violet Times just released the new Cakekitchen LP, "Kangaroos In My Top Paddock", w/ that track you played, 300 copies only, not sure why the playlist says "No Label"...
