Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from April 26, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Moon Unit  Live in the WFMU studio   Favoriting engineered by Ernie Indradat    One of the best bug-out psych ensembles to hail from Scotland in some time, Glasgow's Moon Unit's debut LP "Hell Horse" on the Blackest Rainbow imprint rained some serious sci-fi shred over the WFMU airwaves this past winter. Influenced by the frozen-space zones of UK combos like the Vibracathedral Orchestra and some of the best 90's skree from Japan's PSF label, Moon Unit lock into focus as often as they drift into netherworlds and foggy deconstructions where space and time collapse. Awesome sounds today. Tracklist: Hit the Wizard /. Brain Bubble / The Molten Valve. Downloadable via the Free Music Archive right here!    1:42:48 (Pop-up)

  3:10pm
Cheri Pi:

  3:11pm
BSI:

  3:11pm
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv):

Howdy Brian!
  3:12pm
Christy Minstrel:

  3:16pm
dc pat:

  3:16pm
BT:

  3:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Brian! Hi Yair, everyone!
  3:18pm
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv):

how's going Matt?
  3:18pm
BT:

Hey everyone. Its spring, uh, summer. Gonna be a good show rtoday w/the Moon Unit!
  3:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Yair Going pretty well. The weather's very humid and there's a lot of tree pollen here, though. Is there a lot of tree pollen when spring comes in Tel Aviv?
  3:27pm
B:

Jowe Head at Cake Shop last Saturday!! The Vertical Slum, Full Moon and Mother Sky medley cemented it as the best show i will see in 2011. Great job Brian!
  3:27pm
BT:

DC Pat - that show rules....glad you caught a bunch of em....
  3:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Whoa, thought this was a modern bluegrass re-working of Venus In Furs--turns out Comus is early 70s British "acid folk"!!! I like!!
  3:28pm
BT:

Thank you B! That was the most fun playing ever! Jowe is a king amongst men. A severe honor to be in the mix...
  3:30pm
Christy Minstrel:

That Comus was a 40 or so year reunion - and creepy as ever
  3:32pm
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv):

@Matt , no pollen here, just beautiful spring
@Brian - love that Comus version
  3:34pm
housewolf:

I've been listening to FMU for 25 years. That Glen Galaxy song is one of the strangest songs I've ever heard. Honestly. Thanks.
  3:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Yair: (sniff)(sniff) You're fortunate then! I guess that's not a problem in the Mediterranean -- although you might get sand in the Scirocco winds, I think at the end of summer.
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@housewolf: I've only listened for 2 years, but I love FMU for the same reason. We need a new "strangest song ever" every week or so!
  3:45pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Bill Orcutt is pertty strange too
  3:47pm
Cheri Pi:

This song was written for me.
  3:48pm
J J:

If they start playing Elton John on here, that would be strange.
  3:49pm
Jerry Lewis:

Mom!
  3:49pm
ben drinken:

to that
  3:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cheri: Stephen Sondheim anticipated your coming all the way back in 1970. Once again he is proven right.
  3:49pm
ASB:

This rules. I wish she had a song about making sporadic appearances on Law and Order.
  3:51pm
Cheri Pi:

It's True Matt! I was born in 1971!!
  3:53pm
Ted Nugent:

*Ahem*
  3:53pm
Cheri Pi:

O mah gawd! BT that video is brilliant.
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cheri Wow! I thought you had written "81" before on Surface Noise--that must've been a typo, but what a coincidence in this particular case!
  3:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

I like the name of this label: "Klanggalerie" -- The Noise Gallery!
  3:55pm
Cheri Pi:

'81=I must have been drunk.
  3:55pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Sorry, I came in late. Is there a theme about intoxicated performances goin on?
  3:56pm
Carmichael:

Hi BT and FMU peeps. I may have attempted the dry hips rotation at some point in my life.
  3:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cheri What else is late night commenting for!
  3:59pm
dc pat:

never heard this a capella version. Pretty nice.
  4:00pm
BT:

So, everyone's drunk?
  4:01pm
Scoons:

Not yet : but getting there!
  4:02pm
Carmichael:

Hours away, BT. Today is $2.50 pints at my local micro brew.
  4:03pm
BSI:

Carmichael: I'll be rat there....
  4:03pm
Christy Minstrel:

Hey it's five o'clock somewhere
  4:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BT: Still at work, but waiting for the evening, to transition out of sobriety...

Which pub is that Carmichael? A pint for $2.50 is a very happy hour indeed!
  4:04pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'm starting to hear the call to alcohol myself
  4:05pm
Cheri Pi:

I will be drunk in 2 hours. 2 hours from now.
  4:06pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

didja hear Poly Styrene is dead at 53?
  4:06pm
BSI:

My local has half-off drafts wednesdays (including the decent stuff), so patience rules the day....
  4:07pm
dc pat:

the Asylum here in DC use to have 50 cent drafts starting at 5pm on Saturdays and then increasing by 25 cents every half hour. DOn't know if that still happens...
  4:08pm
dc pat:

BSI: where?
  4:08pm
dc pat:

jeeze you guys are getting me all thirsty..
  4:08pm
Carmichael:

@Matt: http://www.rubiconbrewing.com/

See you all there. I'll buy you a pint.
  4:09pm
dc pat:

DCE: Diane K just played a ton of her tunes
  4:10pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

oh, I was elsewhere then
  4:11pm
jaycjay:

$3 for any draft from noon to 8 pm ($6 after that) at my neighborhood spot, 8 taps, everything from Guinness and Carlsberg to stuff from Brooklyn Brewery, Avery, Founders, whatever micro is up in the rotation. Heading there in a little a while in fact.
  4:12pm
Chris from DC:

Come to think of it, there's a good happy hour next door at Pizzeria Paradiso.....
  4:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carmichael: That's on my other coast, in Sacramento, but that's 3 hours behind me--if I start running NOW...
Maybe BSI's place is closer--I'd like to know myself.
  4:13pm
jaycjay:

Should also say for those who don't drink beer, also $3 for well OR call drinks during that time. Can't beat a $3 Jameson's.
  4:14pm
dc pat:

Georgetown ?
  4:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Julie played her on Dark Night of the Soul--just finished that Archive. Rumours were unconfirmed before, then Julie sadly announced Poly had indeed died yesterday of breast cancer. RIP Poly Styrene.
  4:15pm
BSI:

DCPat: Lou's City Bar, the new place @ Columbia Heights metro. Not a bad place, and they're English Premier League friendly with the TVs, AND it's stumbling-distance from home, so I can't complain.
  4:16pm
Chris from DC:

@Pat: Dupont.
  4:17pm
dc pat:

Chris: ah the original
BSI: damn, sounds great. I have to pull teeth to watch Premier League in my neighborhood. Sorry about Arsenal by the way...
  4:22pm
Chris from DC:

A couple doors down from the original, nice new digs.

Sure wish I had a local.
  4:22pm
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv):

This is good stuff.
  4:22pm
BSI:

Arsenal fans are a blessed/cursed lot. But I sacrifice animals nightly on an altar to Fabregas, so I'm doing my part. ... but yeh, I was shocked/pleased that Lou's was a comfortable pub, for being new & all.
  4:23pm
dc pat:

also by the way: ManU 2 - Schalke 0

I was gonna say, the old place didn't have much of a bar. Haven't seen the new one.
  4:23pm
BSI:

something between this conversation & The Peoples' Temple is making me insanely thirsty.
  4:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks BSI, Chris, pat! Didn't expect this show to be a guide to great DC happy hours!

I'm too far away and work late-to-late, but I am seeing Echo and his Bunnymen on WEDNESDAY May 11!! I'll have to take my friend to Lou's on the Metro ride up, and continue on to the 9:30! Good lead, thanks!
  4:27pm
BSI:

btw, that's half-price drafts all day weds., not just happy hour.
  4:28pm
dc pat:

think I might be late for din-din....
  4:28pm
Christy Minstrel:

Nyogthaeblisz ruls!
  4:29pm
mrs. dc pat:

OH no you don't!
  4:30pm
Handsome Harry:

Yeah dude. Oh yeah.
  4:30pm
Carmichael:

Anyone who walks into The Rubicon and announces "WFMU!" gets a pint from me.
  4:31pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

rock-n-ROLL!!!
  4:31pm
herr noiser:

why does this Queen version sound extra crunchy and non-album like? nice one man. killer set all over!
  4:32pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

they just re-released a bunch of early Queen, maybe it's a lost version. I was only vaguely familiar w the original, haven't heard in years
  4:33pm
glenn:

matt from springfield - the meat purveyors do a bluegrass version of what goes on, as well as round and round by ratt.
  4:33pm
dc pat:

alright kids, goin to Moe's. See ya.
  4:34pm
Cheri Pi:

I felt this same way in 1976, my poor 5 y r old ears were subjected to my parents lame albums.
  4:35pm
Carmichael:

I have the original vinyl of Sheer Heart Attack, and it does sound tinny. Someone must have re-mastered it, with some extra ooomph in the bottom end.
  4:35pm
Carmichael:

Bottoms up, Pat!
  4:35pm
doodle:

!
  4:35pm
glenn:

i wanna kill james taylor too. i gotta say though, elvis' live version of steamroller blues is pretty great.
  4:36pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

no pun intended, Carm?
  4:36pm
Cheri Pi:

Is Sheer heart attack the album w/ no synthesizer on it?
Because this was seriously a drunken argument between friends over the weekend.
  4:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Nice station promo, Randall!
  4:37pm
Christy Minstrel:

That BT just doesn't give a shit
  4:37pm
Carmichael:

He he ... obviously not, but funny nevertheless.
  4:37pm
efd:

hahaha, that was awesome.
  4:38pm
glenn:

how drunk? too drunk to access wikipedia on a smartphone drunk?
  4:39pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

what's the fun of solving a drunken argument with wikipedia! the fun is to keep arguing inconclusively!
  4:40pm
AnAnonymousParty:

Settling an argument with Wikipedia. Now that's funny.
  4:41pm
Cheri Pi:

smartphones were banned; thus our argument was never resolved. I still won't look it up on the internet.
  4:42pm
efd:

CheriPi, I specifically remember the no synths message on A Night At The Opera, but I can't say it wasn't also on Sheer Heart Attack.
  4:43pm
GuardianFan:

they had it on a bunch of their early albums
  4:44pm
efd:

Then there was the inverse "no guitars" message on Gary Wright's Dreamweaver album.
  4:45pm
Cheri Pi:

EFD-you may be right, the claimant remembered there was a message on the album stating no synths were used. Of course none of us believed him and we called him a drunken liar, then we listened to Queen II.
  4:47pm
BT:

re: Queen -- I just had reverb and pitch up to make it sound like Nyogthaeblisz. Sorry to burst the bubble!
  4:48pm
BSI:

Being a closet Queen fan as a kid, I believe that was their running schtick for all the albums. THE GAME was the first one with synths, if memory serves.
  4:52pm
Frisco Kid:

BSI is correct. Every album up to The Game had a no synthesizers statement on it. In my opinion, The Game marks the turning point of Queen from awesome to sucky. I just went on a Queen binge and still feel this holds true.
  4:53pm
buddha in a 10 foot cell:

....think I'm heading for Nirvana ....
  4:54pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

reminds me of the live set a month or two ago by Chris Forsythe....what show was that on? I'm thinking Scott McDowell's on Friday morning.
  4:55pm
BSI:

Frisco: same for me. It's all good until The Game. I think there was some ancient prophecy that predicted the downfall of Queen based on the length of Freddie's hair. Once the hair went, so went THEE POWERS...
  4:57pm
Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

NEVER a Queen fan until Queen 2 ...... but one thing I will admit unlike most GREAT 70's bands led Zep , metal progressive ,, Queen's sound was best live!! I always thought ..
  4:57pm
Cheri Pi:

Once Freddie started fixing his teeth it was downhill...
  5:00pm
Carmichael:

Cheri, I'll look at the friggin' vinyl tonight and let you know tomorrow during Ken's show. I got 'em all.
  5:01pm
SiHV:

Gotta head home, but digging this Moon Unit a lot. Probably on Free Music Archive?
  5:02pm
Cheri Pi:

OK Carmichael-meet you on Ken's board!
  5:05pm
Handsome Harry:

Great live set. Nice job, Moon Unit. Good work, Ernie.
  5:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Moon Unit lock into focus as often as they drift into netherworlds and foggy deconstructions where space and time collapse." For sure--I am in the zone today!
  5:17pm
Ike:

Oh yes, this is my kind of space-time collapse.
  5:18pm
yair yona (tel aviv):

killer set
  5:22pm
BSI:

odd thing, but it's shows like this, that cross over from 5-6pm, that ALMOST make me wish I had an iPhone thing. To take these noises on the bus with me, etc.

Tethered to desk, trying to ignore that siren call of yonder aforementioned beery goodnes....... life is tough at times.... Astounding sounds.
  5:26pm
Carmichael:

Imagine sounding this good and the bonus of no bothersome chord changes. Unreal.
  5:27pm
Christy Minstrel:

Barvo!
  5:28pm
De Sitter:

That was Far Out stuff
  5:28pm
yair yona (tel aviv):

wow - that was just mind blowing. thanks Brian,
  5:28pm
Dweezil:

Killer!!
  5:41pm
BT:

glad you dug! yeah, great mix and jams to the kosmos...
  5:46pm
Andreas:

Great show Brian, pleasure to have been able to take part. Enjoy your new place!
  5:48pm
Andreas:

And thanks to Ernie for a great mix!
  5:48pm
Carmichael:

Thanks Moon Unit! Happy Listener = Happy Purchaser!
  5:49pm
powiva:

YES!
  5:58pm
BT:

Thanks Andreas, hope you had a good flight back and handled Bushwick diner digestion well!
  5:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

Where has jazz gone? To Jooklo Duo!

Thanks to Brian and Moon Unit! We've had great live sets (FOUR weeks in a row!!), though we're taking a break for now I forward to whenever the next set is!
  5:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

G'night everybody!
Now...at last let's get drunk! (sprints out)
  10:50pm
JT:

listening on archive. i hope this shows up on FMA so i don't have to split out the mp3 myself. i like great music but i'm lazy and busy.

anyway, great Live. especially enjoyed the weird vocoder/unplugged-guitar sound.

and will try to get that LP from my usual sources.
