Thank you, 12539, for the info about Decoration Day...now Memorial Day. When did/why the name change? (DJ gets a free pass on looking it up herself - things to do, records to cue!)

Bethany, I can't find any clear statement about the name change, just that Decoration Days were originally somewhat local or state-determined. Memorial Day was used as early as 1882, and over the years the various Days gradually consolidated until Memorial Day was declared the official name by Federal law in 1967.
