hey Mike, those early Meters records really don't capture the bass too well--the drums are sharp in the mix (which is great), but the bass is kind of buried. you can hear the diff on the first two tracks you played. compare vs. james brown tracks of that era.

Mucho - not sure i agree that the JB sound is the one to judge all others against. It's apples & oranges and I like both. I think that Metes mix works 100% for me.

i hear ya i love both too, but Porter's name doesn't roll off the tongue like Bootsy et al when discussing bass players of that era...always thought this may be why. of course he's just as deserving
