Julie:

You cannot do a Canada show without Payolas
  9:42pm
efd:

I have Payolas AND Rock & Hyde!
  9:42pm
PB:

Does The Band count as Canadian, seeing as Levon Helm was the only non-Canadian in the band. I think that 80% Canadian membership would pass the Canadian content regs.

  10:02pm
Sweenbean:

Terrif non rock show i saw in Montreal was Ashley McIssac's young sister Lisa in a small bar. Ive seen him and she was much better. Very trad. she is now an actress and has folk duo.Fantastic fiddler and quite a clogger.

  10:04pm
Sweenbean:

hahaa a Does Evan like the Bruins too?
  10:07pm
PB:

This show is bringing back horrible flashbacks to my teenage years and hearing stuff like Lighthouse, Mahogany Rush and Murray McLachlan on some of the local Toronto radio stations.
  10:07pm
Sweenbean:

Hey Danne, i was thinkng of you this weekend. I wore tha WFMU shirt to our shoot. the guy though preferred me in tie dye. another guy though wore a different FMU shirt. i brought a bag of them down.

  10:09pm
Brian:

Dang... wandered away and missed Coney Hatch AND Prism!
  10:10pm
SF Spike:

Prism Stynx.
  10:10pm
PB:

I never lived in Montreal but used to lisen to CHOM FM when I visited. It was a very cool station. CFNY (Toronto) was also very good in its early days and CHUM-FM was also great in the very early days (late 60s).
  10:10pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

Hello efd & all!!
I second the Chilliwack request, and how about some Fable?
I also bet efd is gonna play something off of Rush's [surprisingly good] cover lp, not a proper Rush-penned song ;-)
Take off!
  10:13pm
Sweenbean:

Also remember pro wrestling from Montreal.Gave us Andre the Giant and Mad Dog Vachon.
  10:15pm
Danne D:

That's cool - I can see why they'd prefer you in tie dye. Actually now that I think about it has FMU ever done a tie-dye shirt?
  10:16pm
Danne D:

@Holly - though it'd be nice if he'd play a little Why Why Zed, eh?
  10:16pm
SF Spike:

Martha and the Muffins?
  10:16pm
G:

What? Nothing by Toronto?? (My sister in Vancouver is reminding me of bands to request...)
  10:17pm
SF Spike:

The Poppy Family!
  10:18pm
efd:

Got that Toronto LP in my record bag, G. And Martha and the Muffins too.

Bad news for Triumph fans, though - there's none in the FMU library.
  10:18pm
Sweenbean:

Spike YES! ECho Beach.
  10:19pm
Julie:

Hi Holly!
  10:21pm
Danne D:

http://wfmu.org/artistbrowser.php?action=artist&artist=Triumph&artist_id=185909
  10:22pm
Dave B:

How's about some "Snortin' Whisky"? - Pat Travers

(Canadian Club of course, eh.?)
  10:23pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

Hi Julie!
Oh, SF Spike just made 2 AWESOME suggestions!
Poppy Family - Where Evil Grows, Shadows On My Wall, There's No Blood In Bone....

And if people want to hear more Sloan, may I put in a request for the _original_ version of "Underwhelmed" from the Peppermint ep?

efd - I really like the Bon
  10:24pm
Sweenbean:

This is great,
  10:24pm
SF Spike:

The Weakerthans might be my favorite current Canadian band. I'm also fond of Simply Saucer.
  10:25pm
Sweenbean:

I meant the Bon. Soon to be on show?
Far away, inside.
  10:25pm
SF Spike:

Yay, Echo Beach! THANX EFD!!!
  10:25pm
calzone!:

Far away inside!
  10:25pm
efd:

oh, Simply Saucer! I meant to grab that from the library... will try to run back in there. Not sure if we have any Weakerthans...
  10:26pm
calzone!:

Echo beach still sounds kinda timeless and cool...
  10:27pm
Sweenbean:

The only thng that helps pass the time away is knowing EFD is just a headphone away
  10:27pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

@Danne -
If efd plays yyz, I'll be compelled to get my flute out of the attic & commence marching - I still remember the formation ;-) [Danne impressively remembers that the Neil Peart-obsessed drummers in my high school marching band successfully lobbied for yyz to be our 1/2 time grand finale]
  10:27pm
?:

I've always liked M&M. Still love the Trance and Dance album.
  10:27pm
efd:

yes, well, I guess we'll hear two M &the Ms songs then.
  10:27pm
calzone!:

  10:28pm
Dave B:

  10:29pm
Kaptain Kool:

If no Triumph, what about Zebra?
They aren't technically Canadian, but they sound like they are.
  10:29pm
Julie:

I think this song is better than Echo Beach
  10:30pm
Sweenbean:

Far away, in TIME? I like my version better,
  10:30pm
calzone!:

Energy can be directed....just sayin'.
  10:31pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

I agree with Julie
  10:32pm
Dave B:

ZEBRA?

Set the WABAC machine...

Next up "Good Rats"
  10:32pm
JMD:

Neat! Elton Jean!
  10:33pm
PB:

In the mid-60s Rick James (who was from Buffalo) played in a band with Neil Young called the Mynah Birds that played the Yonge Street strip in Toronto.
  10:33pm
efd:

OMG, was he really called Elton Jean? That's hilarious. Totally makes sense.
  10:33pm
Parq:

Echo Beach? My nabe last summer -- the bust is called "Echo".

  10:34pm
G:

Did the Mynah Birds open for The Yonge and the Restless?
  10:35pm
Joe B:

didn't Pagiaro used to play third base for the Yankees?
  10:36pm
Joe B:

Mynahs of course also recorded for Motown
  10:36pm
Stevel:

Gotta love a scratchy record. Its a sign of love. Abusive love possibly, but love nonetheless.
  10:36pm
calzone!:

EFD's copy of Rock Me Gently sounds very 'Pre-enjoyed'!
  10:37pm
Dave B:

How about "Liquor and Whores" by Bubbles (from Trailer Park Boys)

  10:38pm
Beavis:

  10:38pm
calzone!:

Bout time!
  10:38pm
Randy in NC:

efd, did you ever listen to CKLW when you were a kid? I used to listen to them at night in Boston. If memory serves me right, in the late '60's they were owned by the same company as WRKO in Boston and had the same format, same jingles and such.
  10:39pm
Brian:

The Andy Kim sent me into a K-Tel fever dream...

And now I drinking paralyzers on the dance floor of The Pat', Switchin' to Glide...

What part of my youth will I be transported to next?
  10:40pm
Sweenbean:

Best song EVAH on EVAN.
  10:40pm
efd:

Randy, I did tune them in once in a while! And CKLM as well, I think.
  10:40pm
Dave B:

@calzone - the proper proncunciations would bee

"boout time, eh?"

just sayin'. know what I'm sayin?
  10:41pm
SF Spike:

Switchin' to Glide! There was a rock station in Phoenix that would play this song at 5 p.m. every Friday. I thought that was kinda brilliant. Better than Loverboy's "Working for the Weekend."
  10:41pm
Sweenbean:

never heard another song by these guys. Guess im lazy.
  10:41pm
calzone!:

The big payoff!
  10:41pm
Dave B:

and spelling would be

bee = be
  10:41pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

@Danne - Color me clueless - I never connected the song title with the airport code. Wow.
  10:41pm
Fuzzy:

"Switchin' to Glide" -- great junior year of highschool tune...WCOZ in Boston, those were the days....
  10:42pm
Sweenbean:

From a Wednesday point of view.
  10:42pm
G:

I listened to CKLW (800AM) back in the Rosalie Trombley days, mid 60s till I moved to England in late 1971. I lived in southeast Michigan.

CKLW... the Motor City...
  10:43pm
Dave B:

I just saved a lot on my car insurance by

SWITCHING TO GLIDE!
  10:43pm
Stevel:

Payoff indeed! Great, great pop song. Not even sure where I heard it, but I heard it a lot.
  10:43pm
PB:

Wasn't CKLW a Windsor station?
  10:43pm
Randy in NC:

CKLW I guess was a 50,000W clear channel station because you could get them all over the north east on a good night.
  10:43pm
Danne D:

I used to joke that there were basically 3 types of people when it came to Rush:

1) Those who owned every bit of everything Rush ever produced
2) Those who couldn't stand Rush and owned nothing of theirs
3) People who owned Moving Pictures
  10:43pm
SF Spike:

Dave B Funny!
  10:44pm
calzone!:

Not just the greatest Canadian song ever, but theeer greatest song in the whole world ever!
  10:44pm
Randy in NC:

@ PB, yes.

  10:44pm
Sweenbean:

hey Julie? you just prefer the Toyah version of Echo Beach,
  10:44pm
G:

Yes, but their famous jingle was "CKLW the Motor City". They had far more US than Canadian listeners, and did tons of ads for Detroit car dealerships...
  10:45pm
Stevel:

2112 inspired a great deal of dope smoking in my circle.
  10:45pm
Sweenbean:

Awesome line, Dave B. !!!
  10:46pm
Dave B:

:-)
  10:46pm
Julie:

You realize what I'm hearing every time you say "kings"
  10:46pm
Randy in NC:

@G, I wonder if they had to have Canadian Content back then?
  10:47pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

@Danne - I was a "1" up through & including Signals. Lost me at Grace Under Pressure. Came back for that cover lp I suspect we'll be hearing.
  10:48pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

kinks?
  10:48pm
Kaptain Kool:

Who will EFD play first? Aldo Nova or Honeymoon Suite?
  10:48pm
G:

The operated in Canada (station in Windsor). CKLW having to follow can-con regs brought a lot of Canadian artists to American attention, b/c for awhile in the late 60s CKLW had one of the most influential top-40 playlists in North America...
  10:48pm
Sweenbean:

dont knock Canadian content. it gave us the Great White North.
  10:48pm
Julie:

Sweenbean -- the Toyah version IS what I'm used to..It's a great song, but I loved that second one
  10:48pm
Julie:

@holly very good! :)
  10:49pm
David (chudleycannons):

You know what's Canadian, good, and Chris Sims would probably want to listen to: Plumtree's Scott Pilgrim.
  10:49pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

@Julie - you know I have an unfair advantage ;-)
  10:50pm
Sweenbean:

how was Toyah. Her band is pretty big now.
  10:50pm
Doug Mckenzie:

according to wikipedia, canadian content rules came in in 1971
  10:50pm
Dave B:

So, would "Aldo Nova" in English translate to "Aldo No Go"?
  10:51pm
glenn:

i'm waiting for cub.
  10:51pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

Oops - missed efd's backsell - what WAS the second M&M song? I can't pull out my lps right now
  10:52pm
Julie:

paint by number heart I think
  10:52pm
glenn:

  10:52pm
Julie:

@Sween her band was AWESOME..it's like great new Toyah stuff PLUS
  10:52pm
T-Zero:

I think Metro was 79. Trance and Dance was 80.

Paint by Number Heart, Holly
  10:53pm
glenn:

oh well, neko was in cub for a while.
  10:54pm
Julie:

  10:54pm
johnk:

great DVD on CKLW
Radio Revolution: The Rise and Fall of the Big 8
unfortunately currently unavailable on Amazon
  10:54pm
G:

CKLW alrready played noticeable can-con in the late 60s. Maybe some system or accommodation already existed informally before the major legislation was passed. For example, CKLW really pushed the Guess Who well before 1971 -- the Guess Who were huge already in spring 1970.
  10:55pm
PB:

Nic Harcourt has a 5 page entry called O, Canada in his book Music Lust.
  10:55pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

Hi Doug, you hoser!
  10:55pm
Sweenbean:

Yes i keep hearing of them but cant think of one particular song,
  10:55pm
Dave B:

I suppose there's no room for Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians doing "O' Canada" is there?
  10:55pm
glenn:

hah. teenage head. saw them many many many times.
  10:56pm
PB:

Teenage Head were great.
  10:56pm
yourboss:

  10:56pm
PB:

Didn't they have another great song called Top Down?
  10:57pm
Dave B:

teenage head...

oh, never mind...
  10:57pm
glenn:

yep. that's on the first album.
  10:57pm
Julie:

I keep thinking he is saying "I am disco Stu"
  10:58pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

I'll see your Neko & raise you Kate & Anna McGarrigle - how about the Swimming Song (they do it better than Loudon, I think)
  10:58pm
Sweenbean:

I saw two big shows in the old forum. Pink Floyd premiering Dark Side to yawns, and the Who being unable to play Quadrophenia because tapes wouldnt work. Regarded as their worst show ever. They ended up fighting amongst themselves and spent night in jail.
  10:58pm
efd:

Kaptain Kool, fooled you with some SAGA!
  10:59pm
Julie:

Joni Mitchell is canadian isn't she
  10:59pm
JMD:

fuck yeah! Saga! Thanks1
  10:59pm
Danne D:

WOOHOO! SAGA!
  10:59pm
Randy in NC:

@G even though CKLW as I recall had the same owner as WRKO in Boston, same format, jingles, etc, I do remember the music being different sometimes.
  10:59pm
Danne D:

I like the slightly more melodramatic "Wind Him Up" which tells a harrowing tale of the hazards of compulsive gambling...
  11:00pm
Julie:

a lot of these Canadian rock bands sound like they're right out of the Clay Pigeon library
  11:00pm
T-Zero:

Saskatoon, Julie
  11:00pm
PB:

@ Julie, Joni Mitchell is from Saskatoon and cut her teeth on the Toronto folk scene.
  11:00pm
Randy in NC:

I think top 40 was more localized back then.
  11:00pm
Kaptain Kool:

Nice!
  11:00pm
JMD:

My mom bought me this record for a birthday present when it came out just because she new I liked Canadian power trios. Whatta mom!
  11:01pm
Danne D:

Julie, like I said, see if you can find out where Clay hid his Triumph CD at the station so EFD can play it :)
  11:01pm
Danne D:

He never really says what else they'll be reaching for in this song
  11:02pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

@jmd - That's a great anecdote. Yay to your mom!
  11:02pm
Droll:

Whoa -- I totally mistook Saga for Loverboy at first! CC: Check. I miss this song like I miss Survivor, who also had some solid singles.
  11:02pm
Sweenbean:

I think Clay Pigeon is in every one of these bands, except Martha and the Muffins.
  11:02pm
Dave B:

@Julie -

that would be a major Triumph...

...literally
  11:02pm
Julie:

YAY!!
  11:03pm
Joe B:

right on, Randy. Jerry Blavat in Philly had a different top 40 than the rest of the country.
  11:03pm
glenn:

there's a great documentary called the festival express, about a series of concerts across canada in (i think) 1970, and the hijinks that ensued. also, they were taking the train.
  11:03pm
efd:

There will be no Loverboy played on this show. I have SOME standards, after all.

PS - Hi Droll!
  11:03pm
G:

From wiki article on CKLW: "... breaking records by Canadian acts such as Gordon Lightfoot, the Poppy Family, Skylark, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, the Stampeders, The Bells, Neil Young, Five Man Electrical Band, April Wine, and the Guess Who and helping them to all become well-known hit artists across the United States as well."
  11:04pm
eastvanhalen:

Thank the gods for the Loverboy ban. I was getting flashbacks just thinking about it.
  11:05pm
pgw in mntclr:

+1 for "I think Clay Pigeon is in every one of these bands..."
  11:05pm
eastvanhalen:

First arena show I ever saw: Prism and Loverboy at the Pacific Coliseum. I was 12. Eek.
  11:05pm
glenn:

well, loverboy is definitely the only canadian band to include a former member of x ray spex
  11:05pm
PB:

@glenn, I remember that the Grateful Dead were on that cross-country train tour but can't remember any of the other acts. The documentary was very interesting.
  11:05pm
Sweenbean:

Thank you Evan.
How about Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, the Canadian Byrds?
  11:05pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

Payola$ = wonderful.

efd, I trust your standards also exclude Bryan Adams?
  11:06pm
efd:

Holly, you are correct.
  11:07pm
glenn:

buddy guy, janis joplin, tom rush, mashmakhan, maybe mike bloomfield. i can't remember them all.
  11:07pm
Stevel:

PB: Janis Joplin, Buddy Guy, The Band, others but I'm blanking.
  11:07pm
arugula:

oof! the next thing you know, you'll be tracking some icicle works; whom had a brilliant first album mind you. where is the love indeed!
  11:07pm
Dave B:

@efd - set the WABAC machine:

(sorry I couldn't resist using that URL...)
  11:07pm
Julie:

I love the rhythms on this song
  11:07pm
Danne D:

Alas Scott, some of the authority figures around WFMU do not have the same ban on Loverboy as you do. "Hot Girls In Love" anyone?
http://wfmu.org/artistbrowser.php?action=artist&artist=Loverboy&artist_id=27002

Stevel:

Best part of the doc is when hippie musicians are forced to turn to BOOZE!
  11:08pm
SF Spike:

Wow. Payola$. Yer really killin' it tonight. I'm outta work in ten minutes, but I might have to stick around. Just don't play any Mahogany Rush.
  11:08pm
arugula:

  11:08pm
Sweenbean:

so after pink floyd did Dark Side, which nobody knew or liked, we were walking out. I was with these French Canadian guys from school and their friends, One sneered; Preeeeetenish Craaaaap. I had to agree and of course still do.
  11:09pm
Stevel:

Oh, Sha Na Na was in the film too. Pretty odd.
  11:09pm
Danne D:

Bryan Adams in the WFMU mix too:

  11:10pm
PB:

@Steve1, the Dead didn't play in Canada for years because they were terrified of Canadian customs.
  11:10pm
glenn:

really? i remember sha na na in the woodstock film.
  11:10pm
Danne D:

Sha-Na-Na?. Yup FMU has played them too:
http://wfmu.org/artistbrowser.php?action=artist&artist=Sha+Na+Na&artist_id=165191
  11:10pm
PB:

That is weird but Sha Na Na also played Woodstock, I think.
  11:10pm
Droll:

I will match, CAD for CAD, any payola to play Rush on broadcast FM in the USA.
  11:11pm
eastvanhalen:

Tsk, glenn, don't be messing with people like that. :)
  11:12pm
Danne D:

Yup PB, Sha Na Na went on right before Hendrix (at least that's what Wikipedia Sez - I was negative-1 years old then)
  11:12pm
Stevel:

SNN DID play Woodstock. Anyone know why they had that sort of cred at the time?

"Festival Express" was the film. Worth a watch, especially for the jam session on the train.

in the woodstock era, sha na na were so retro they were like performance art space aleins, that's why
  11:14pm
glenn:

sha na na probably played cheap. all those guys had day jobs, from what i recall.
  11:14pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

That's efd's call. Though we could threaten a nasty flying horned beetle invasion...
  11:15pm
Dave B:

(i couldn't figure out how to insert accent "agu" or "grave" - but Gold Lame works just the same)
  11:15pm
Sweenbean:

Anyone remember an acoustic cover of Cuts Like A Knife FMU used to play years ago. it was deadpan but hysterical.
  11:15pm

Semi-legendary Vancouver f*ck band the Frank Frink Five used to do Cuts Like A Knife Polka. it was awesome.
  11:18pm
eastvanhalen:

Mind you, they'll make anything into a polka if you feed them enough beer.
  11:18pm
Danne D:

I heard a rumor that EFD is gonna be the next GM of the Red Sox...

  11:21pm
Danne D:

Evan may need to expand this to Canada month
  11:21pm
Holly the (nice) Rush fan in NC:

I wonder if Evan is a carrot or stick kinda guy. I'm leaning towards carrot, which means, Honking, you're going to have to offer to stay OUT of the studio.

Maybe we can knit efd a toque?
  11:21pm
PB:

efd, great show. A real trip down memory lane for this Canuck. I have to turn in but will check out the archives for the last 40 minutes.

  11:26pm
Julie:

Rush fans have nice tatas?
  11:26pm
Droll:

Not sure why Canukism is so popular tonight, but nobody's pressed the big red maple leaf shaped button over there labeled "April Wine" to see if it takes us on a journey to the stars.
  11:26pm
Danne D:

I gotta head out myself - but wi][ be sure to get the rest of my Canadian content via the archives.

Thanks for a great show as always Evan :)

wow. That's my photo of The Diodes. I took it in 1977 or 78 in NYC at The Paramount Hotel.

For the person who asked what is Canadian Content (to qualify for airplay on Canadian radio) it must have 2 of these 4 criteria: M (Music is 100% written by a Canadian), A (the artist is Canadian, ie solo artist or band if the main performers are Canadian - could be tricky), P (song is produced 100% in Canada, recording, mixing), L (lyrics are 100% written by Canadian). Bryan Adams disputed this when he discovered one of his albums didn't qualify cause he co-wrote with a non-Canadian & recorded in the UK or somewhere and sort of got the CRTC (our FCC) to bend a little but... he's Bryan Adams :)

lots of stuff on my Bongo Beat Records site.
PS - Diodes on tour in Canada Nov 15-19!
