Favoriting October 19, 2011: Shock & Awetober week 3: A shining example of a typical Evan "Funk" Davies show. THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE PLEDGING FOR, PEOPLE!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

It's week 3 of Shock & Awetober on WFMU! We;ve got live bands and tons of other special events on WFMU, and it's also our first-ever Silent Fundraiser! Sincere thanks to those of you who have pledged so far -- I REALLY appreciate it! However, it pains me to point out that with 3 out of 4 Shock and Awetober shows in the can at this point I should have raised around 75% of my goal. Sadly, as the thermometer up at the top of the page indicates, I've still got a ways to go. PLEASE use that form at the top of this page to make a pledge! Thank you.
You're also invited to vote for the theme of this year's Singles Going Steady show! It's coming up in less than a week, and YOU can help decide which 45s I'll be spinning. And guess what, you can make a pledge on that page too. DO IT!

Listener comments!

  9:06pm
Danne D:

Hey EFD :) Hey Funk Fans :)
Happy World Series everyone!
  9:06pm
Monitor:

scoreless
  9:06pm
Danne D:

Hope that Evan's show can drown out the stupid hammering they are doing here at the coffee shop :(
  9:07pm
Stevel:

Pledging tonight! Love a bunch of WFMU shows, but efd tops my list!
  9:07pm
Playlist:

Any hammering sounds here are *smart*.
  9:08pm
efd:

Thanks so much Steve, I appreciate it! Hi everybody!
  9:10pm
Danne D:

I'm sorry Evan, but I had to make my stealth marathon to the wonderful Ms. Amanda. Hope you can understand :)

I'm sure that your loyal fanbase will come through with lotsa pledge. To the ladies out there, Evan loves when you pledge to his show. Just sayin'
  9:11pm
Richard from Venezuela:

Good evening Evan and all the listeners.
  9:12pm
efd:

You are dead to me, Danne D.

JUST KIDDING!! The money all goes to the same place, thanks for pledging!
  9:12pm
efd:

Also, I love it just as much when men pledge to my show.
  9:16pm
Richard from Venezuela:

thanks for the last Notekillers live session. So great.
  9:17pm
efd:

You're very welcome Richard, glad you enjoyed it!
  9:18pm
PB:

With certain notable exceptions (off the top of my head, English Beat, Dream Syndicate, Flipper) the early 80s was a really, really bad era for pop/rock music especially "electro-pop".
  9:20pm
efd:

Did somebody say "The English Beat?!"
  9:22pm
Danne D:

Whoa Cool :)
  9:22pm
PB:

@efd. that was good timing!
  9:22pm
Stevel:

Uncanny!! It can not be explained!
  9:22pm
Danne D:

To the guys out there, I have it on good authority that the ladies who pledge to Evan's show like guys who pledge to Evan's show. Just sayin'
  9:24pm
Parq:

EFD just can't stop it.
  9:25pm
efd:

However, I would prefer if people simply pledge out of the goodness of their heart (or because they believe in what WFMU is doing and what it represents), not just to try to impress some girl (or guy)!
  9:25pm
PB:

Warching the WS and listening to efd, what could be bad.
  9:27pm
Playlist:

Danne clearly has an advanced degree from Pimpston University :-)
  9:28pm
Joe B:

early 80s were great in my view
  9:31pm
Danne D:

you ain't down with the Funk, you ain't down with Davies!

Get down into your wallet and pledge!
  9:33pm
Danne D:

That's a friggin ALL STAR line up!

:( I really doubt I can make it. I already snuck out for the meet-up last night and really need to work more :(
  9:34pm
Danne D:

Ugh - that meet-up is so good :( You guys gotta fill that place up!
  9:34pm
G:

Just how weird were the live weirdos, Danne?
  9:38pm
Li'l Funk:

Catchy sailor! http://youtu.be/FeISAc9j0WE
  9:38pm
David:

lol, glad to hear the explanation for why you thanked Marion Vierra
  9:39pm
Danne D:

about as weird as could be expected, G.

My drawing on the suw website (that I did before the meet-up) wasn't too far off base ;)
  9:41pm
PB:

Mikal Cronin is great (not as great as Ty Segall) but great nonetheless. I really like this album.
  9:44pm
Danne D:

Ever topical - Evan manages to work in a 10/21/11 end of the world song :)
  9:45pm
calzone!:

A 'New Afternoon Show' classic - Mood 6!
  9:45pm
G:

1959 and 1961 were the two really great post-WWII Lafite vintages as of the time Foghat wrote the song. It was tremendously expensive by the bottle. I imagine Foghat were having fun with thr fact that they'd been able to afford having it.
  9:46pm
Li'l Funk:

<internet stalker mode>You know, White Pages says there's only *one* person named Marion Vierra in the whole U.S. of A. Maybe you should see if it's her!</internet stalker mode>
  9:46pm
calzone!:

I purchased my Mood 6 45 @ Metro Records in Little Neck, Queens.
  9:46pm
Danne D:

*redacted as I don't wanna get in trouble with EFD*
  9:47pm
Marion Vierra:

LEAVE ME ALONE, YOU OLD RECORD FREAKS!!!!
  9:47pm
Danne D:

Marion Vierra is probably just a slick pseudonym for someone famous. Like Meredith Vierra or something.
  9:50pm
David:

Li'l Funk, I also googled the name wondering if it was a celebrity. Feel weird now that I know there's only one.
  9:50pm
Aharon:

Pete Galub: nice guy and good musician. Good to hear him on the radio.
  9:51pm
calzone!:

Old record freaks don't die, they just listen to FMU....
  9:53pm
Amanda:

This Jacuzzi Boys track is very good to grate cheese to. Hi everyone!
  9:54pm
Danne D:

Hi for a 4th time Amanda :D

I agree, this song is grate
  9:56pm
efd:

OMG, the only thing worse than you saying "this song is grate" is that I didn't think of it.
  9:56pm
Grater:

But not cheesy.
  9:57pm
Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

Hi Evan & all!

@PB - I must say I've never seen Flipper described as 'pop' before. I would LOVE to see your lp collection! :-)

@Danne -That was cheesy.
  9:57pm
Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

Drat you, Grater
  9:58pm
Grater:

Poke.
  9:58pm
PB:

@Holly, clearly Flipper was hardcore punk, I just rushed the comment out.
  9:58pm
Amanda:

Settle down, everyone! About to eat my dinner and relax with a glass of Cupcake Vineyards Boogie Merlot.
  10:01pm
Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

@PB - I'd still love to see your record collection! (Grater, no snide comments.)

Amanda. I toast you with a glass of Pietra Santa Cabernet

efd - thanks for jwc iii!
  10:02pm

Danne D:

given that it's a Rock Jock meetup, I presume you'll be wearing your Red Sox jersey, Evan?
  10:07pm
Weights and Measures:

That's 1/2 of "at 1/2 staff"
  10:08pm
Stevel:

So happy for what is about to come, but sad as well.
  10:08pm
PB:

How old is Dick Dale? Chuck Berry just turned 85.
  10:10pm
Guessing:

A few Wednesdays ago efd piled his Sox gear in a heap and poured lighter fluid on it, etc. etc.
  10:10pm
Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

  10:19pm
paulyD:

  10:21pm
efd:

Stevel, I'm concerned that Holly may not have heard the news yet...

Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

  10:26pm
Robin E:

Evan! No fair! I'm bone tired and wanna go to sleep but you're playing such mega fantastic music (including my favorite English Beat and Paul Weller songs) that I can't bear to turn the radio off and it's too big to put under my pillow!

  10:33pm
Li'l Funk:

  10:36pm
Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

Incognito. But just look for the lobstah.

Mostly I follow food trucks.

Excellent song choices, btw!
  10:37pm
efd:

To be honest, the song choices were made by Billy and Miriam at Norton! :) I'm just playing what they put out!
  10:38pm
Stevel:

That was fucking beautiful. Thank you. Gotta dance!
  10:38pm
13 Women:

We knew you couldn't forget us, Evvie!
  10:38pm
Parq:

Oh thank God, "13 Women"! I was going into withdrawal.
  10:38pm
PB:

I pride myself on knowing a little bit about music but I've got to admit I've never even heard of The Renegades. Good stuff. Did they write Cadillac? Of course, the Clash did a great cover on London Calling. I guess they retitled it Brand New Cadillac.
  10:38pm
Danne D:

Hi Cheri.

Wow that's such sad news, Evan :( Bittersweet hearing "13 Women" tonight :(
  10:39pm
slugluv1313:

ah!!!!! THIRTEEN WOMEN!!!!!! somehow *perfect* for sending out resumes . . . ! THANK YOU, Mr. Evan "Funk" Davies!!!!!
  10:40pm
jaycjay:

Of all the many, many recorded versions of 13 Women, The Renegades did it best.
  10:41pm
slugluv1313:

oh good grief but now just seeing that Kim Brown has passed away, RIP :(

If I could be someone other than me, I'd be Billy 'n' Miriam, I think.
  10:44pm
john:

Back from one of the best Jonathan Richman shows I can recall, and I missed Splash of Colour and Sandy Salisbury? Serves me right for going out on a Wednesday!
  10:46pm
Danne D:

I think I might know that Amanda in Jersey City :)
  10:47pm
efd:

Hi John! I've been waiting for you to return.

I think you made the right choice, it's not like the Jonathan Richman show will be archived.
  10:47pm
Danne D:

Did Jonathan do "Government Center" ? :)
  10:47pm
Danne D:

(I'm partial to that particular Jonathan Richman song) :)
  10:49pm
john:

Thanks, Evan! No Danne, almost all newer stuff, with one excursion into Egyptian Reggae. Tiny place, couldn't have held more than 200. We were about six feet from him most of the show, except when he stepped off the stage and wandered around telling stories.
  10:49pm
cheri:

well i'll see you later evan & danne ,,got to go evan,,keep the funk up! like i said before "you and joe mcg know how to treat a woman, night all,,
  10:51pm
Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

Evan, can we hear some Jonathan?
"Her Mystery".. especially resonates.

OH BUT HUNGRY, SO ANGRY!!!
  10:51pm
Danne D:

8( No Government Center 8(

This is very Funky, Evan :)

Gnight Cheri!
  10:51pm
Stevel:

Very jealous of John! We in the Midwest don't see Jonathan R. very much. One of my favorite performers ever.
  10:51pm
Rickwaukee:

Ack - make me feel so old - 30 years older anyway
  10:52pm
Danne D:

Sounds like a great show, John. It's always good when Jonathan is into it (which from seeing him like a half-dozen or so times isn't always the case).

I'm looking forward to seeing John Wesley Harding next month :)
  10:53pm
Stevel:

Rick: I saw him in Madison, WI. You're right. Probably in 1983.

Someone out there HELP US!
  10:53pm
Joe B:

glad to hear Jonathan is pushing the new stuff ... his recent albums have all been very strong
  10:53pm
Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

@Steve1 -

You should move to NC - JR plays Chapel Hill almost every Valentines Day.
  10:53pm
Danne D:

This is a good song to listen to while eating an entire pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream :)
  10:53pm
Conselua:

Evan this show is phat! Props!
  10:57pm
john:

He was totally into it tonight, though he's been pretty engaged every time I've seen him. Especially when he was persuaded to come out 10 minutes after he said goodnight to do one more encore of Not So Much To Be Loved As To Love. I think the small venue really helped---last time I saw him was at the El Rey in LA, which was jam (and action) packed, quite a different vibe.
  10:58pm
Holly the (disgruntled) Yankee fan in NC:

I didn't think I liked the Fungi Girls. I was wrong.

Tell the 'Pope' story!!! :-)
  10:58pm
David:

foghat won for best song title, but I think this band wins for best (or at least longest) name.
  11:00pm
PB:

That Fungi Girls track was good but it sounded a lot like Beefheart's Dropout Boogie to me.
  11:00pm
john:

PS Sad about Kim Brown. I guess now there are thirteen women and no men in town.
  11:04pm
david:

going through my vinyl since moving, happy to hear all these records.
  11:05pm
Danne D:

Enron Hubbard may be the best stage name ever :)
