Listener comments!

  3:02am
Matt from Springfield:

Get Your Kinks Out Honey!
This mix IS discoey!
  3:03am
Andrew:

Hi Julie & Matt....good start to 'The Julie Show' hehe
This is so different sounding...
  3:05am
Julie:

Hi Guys!
  3:05am
Matt from Springfield:

I was actually awake before the beginning this time--I heard "The Julie Show" bit as well! Dum Dum gives hysterical intros to this show.
  3:08am
Matt from Springfield:

Julie, I was busy and was going to cast an official email "vote" for this show last Thu morning, when I saw this already on the schedule! The response must have been overwhelmingly in favor of Kinks!
  3:12am
Matt from Springfield:

And ALEX CHILTON! Wonderful!
Too bad we can't have a Kinks and Big Star show anymore :(
  3:13am
Andrew:

nearly 100% Julie ^_^
pretty good going, that is probably the highest one i've seen
  3:14am
Sweenebean:

i was trying to think of song that was so impressive at jones Beach '93. That was it Til the End of the day.
  3:14am
Julie:

That doesn't let you guys off the hook! :) Let's go past 100!
  3:15am
Sweenebean:

Past 100 thousand?
  3:16am
Andrew:

well, i can give you 1% ^_^
Hi Sweenebean
  3:17am
Sweenebean:

Hello Andrew.
  3:18am
Matt from Springfield:

Despite the parody of Swinging London fashions here, it seems Ray and the guys were quite fashionable themselves in the day, very mod.
  3:21am
fred von helsing:

stuck in a meeting... no Kinks love for this guy yet...
  3:24am
King Penguin (formerly Sweenbean:

What's this? sounds great
  3:24am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, pre-Kinks Ray!
Even pre-"Long Tall Sally" (Kinks first single, in 1964)
  3:28am
King Penguin:

My first band was called the Ravens. Maye that's us. We did Well Respected Man.
  3:31am
Matt from Springfield:

@KP: Seriously? Did you know about the Davies connection with the Ravens then? That's an amazing coincidence!
  3:32am
King Penguin:

Nope. w knew there was an R&B band by that name. WE were in grade school.
  3:33am
King Penguin:

Julie, you'e going to the Beacon? See you there :-)
  3:35am
Matt from Springfield:

So THAT's the "Percy" album--that Lola instrumental is IDEAL talkover music!
  3:35am
G:

I always liked the innocence of the time "Come dancing" talks about and always thought of my sister when I heard it. I think I also remember David Watts sung by The Jam.
  3:37am
King Penguin:

That Jam cover is great, They dont try to do too much.
  3:37am
Andrew:

wow this is different...
ah, love this version, much faster...

also I looked up the lyrics for Come Dancing...yeh it is pretty racy ^_^
  3:38am
G:

I love the Fa Fa Fa's on The Jam's cover.
  3:39am
King Penguin:

well now ihabee to look them up because i neve thought that.
  3:40am
Julie:

Sorry can't talk much these songs are SHORT
  3:41am
Matt from Springfield:

I heard "Destroyer" was a fairly big hit in '78, like "All Day and All the Night" reincarnated for the next generation.
  3:41am
Andrew:

hmm, wonder why it didn't go to 95%? It was on 94% before yeh?

is it just me, or does the guitar bit sound like all day & all of the night?
  3:41am
King Penguin:

Andrew, i'm a little disappointed in those lyrics.
  3:42am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, Zydeco "Apeman"!
  3:44am
King Penguin:

That goal keep getting higher.
  3:44am
King Penguin:

Fa Fa Fa.
  3:45am
G:

Back in the early 80's when I was a kid and heard "Destroyer" on WNEW little did I know I would one day have a little green man in my head gnawing at me.
  3:45am
King Penguin:

goal keep? Yeesh. The cat moved
  3:48am
Andrew:

hmm, sounds like he's got an Aussie accent...
  3:48am
King Penguin:

G, that's my little Green Man.
  3:49am
Matt from Springfield:

Play the lounge circuit, Ray!
  3:49am
Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew: Agree with King Penguin, "Come Dancing" is a lot more, um, *tasteful* than it could have been.

Now, I first heard "88 Lines About 44 Women" as an early teen, and then Julie played a radio-edit of that last year--it was A LOT dirtier than I was aware of at 14!
  3:52am
Andrew:

I was like that with walk on the wild side
  3:52am
Julie:

C'mon fellas, make my meter rise
  3:54am
King Penguin:

88 lines. is that kinks?
  3:54am
Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew: Apparently the censors on that one were so out of touch, they were unaware "giving head" meant something!
  3:55am
King Penguin:

Julie!
  3:55am
Andrew:

I put $10 in but it didn't make it go up...usually $10 = 1%
  3:55am
Matt from Springfield:

@KP: The Nails, actually. From '86.
Check Julie's show from Oct 19 2010.
  3:56am
Matt from Springfield:

LOL Ray! I'd rather have a great ass than be an asshole myself!
  3:57am
Matt from Springfield:

Clap your hands everybody!
  3:58am
G:

Ha ha ha. I wish I could send you mine for safe keeping King Penguin! As I remember back in the pre fuzz boxes days of the early 60's the Kinks would poke holes on their amplifiers to get the distorted sound they wanted at the time. Clap. Clap.
  4:00am
King Penguin:

I get the picture. The lyrics read like Jim Carrol
  4:03am
King Penguin:

There's a great vid of Kinks doing Sunny Afternoon in the dead of winter. Snow and all. Youtube.
  4:04am
Kevin:

I"m having a good time, thanks! Gr33tz from sweden
  4:04am
Matt from Springfield:

FOUR, actually, unless somebody's using multiple aliases here? :)
  4:04am
King Penguin:

Yes. G. ive only heard that thing about the speakers in relation to the Kinks.
  4:05am
Matt from Springfield:

KEVIN! You make it five--welcome to tonight's Kinksfest.
  4:06am
King Penguin:

I started as Sweenbean. Couldnt get into it.
  4:07am
darue:

there's a nice Ray Davies solo performance from relatively recently, called "live at Sage Gateshead" all should check it out.

get into the Great Lost Kinks Album Juile, ballade of the Virgin Soldiers would work nicely. You could could put together quite a "dark" kinks set :) too. Wicked show!
  4:08am
King Penguin:

we used to disconnect the speaker wires and run them into a second amp. Now that was distortion. In effect that's all a fuzzbox does.
  4:10am
King Penguin:

Great version of Dead End! not familiar with it
  4:10am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: So that's what you meant when you said how Dave Davies is "hippy dippy" :)

Joe McG would be impressed with you playing all these mono cuts tonight!
  4:11am
Matt from Springfield:

@KP: In this case, I think it's actually a different recording instead of just a different mix. Ray's vocal sounds different, but the backing tracking the same as the stereo version I'm familiar with.
  4:12am
fred von helsing:

yeay... I am at one with Ray...
  4:13am
King Penguin:

Is that Marc Bolan in there?
  4:13am
Julie:

@FVH :D
  4:13am
Julie:

that's why I played it..very Bolanesque
  4:16am
King Penguin:

Oh def. sounds different. Everyone is so into mono Truth is Stereo always sounds better in car. And that's al that matters. But when it's a different mix or recording it's worthwhile.
  4:17am
pierre:

Bonjour Juile !
Bonjour fellow listeners !!!
  4:17am
King Penguin:

Art lover What a great one THanks Julie!
Never sounded more lechy.
  4:17am
Julie:

Bonjour Pierre!
  4:18am
Julie:

this was always my fave song on this record, ever since he sang it on SNL
  4:18am
Caryn:

Good god, this track sound even dirtier nowadays...
  4:18am
King Penguin:

Lovely
  4:19am
Matt from Springfield:

Never heard "Art Lover" before! Thanks! A big bowl of "lech" from Ray, KP! That would be a good song for SNL.
  4:19am
King Penguin:

Pierre, voulez-vous Les Kinks?
  4:19am
Andrew:

Hi Kevin, Fred & Pierre ^_^
oh also, hi G & darue...
i like stereo cos i listen on headphones a lot

Also, hi Caryn ^_^
  4:19am
Matt from Springfield:

Bonjour pierre!
Hello Caryn!
  4:20am
King Penguin:

What's wrong with being an art lover That song is set in Paris!
  4:21am
pierre:

J'adore les Kinks, alors oui merci, je veux bien les Kinks
  4:21am
King Penguin:

I'll tell tya his show sounds great with headphones, when Julie speaks. Yeow!
  4:22am
Caryn:

Hi everyone! I'm kicking myself over here, since being on the other side of the planet, I unfortunately remembered my calculations for when the show starts wrong, so I missed the first hour! Dammit!
  4:22am
G:

Hello Everyone. Lovely is correct. What a great show Julie. Before, when I wanted to be a rock and roller, I always thought you had to sound like a mix of David Bowie and The Kinks if you really wanted to make it. You also had to play the piano. I too was going to mention the singing sounded like T Rex.
  4:23am
Julie:

Hi Caryn & G..and any new folks I missed! Trying to keep up here
  4:24am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Is there a female vocal credit for the wife on Soap Opera? She sounds familiar...
  4:24am
King Penguin:

i adore the Kinks, thank you very much, i'll have the croque madame?
Is that correct, Pierre?
  4:24am
Andrew:

a lot of these songs sound a lot 'softer' than say, You Really Got Me (original one), or more laid back, ballady....
good to hear though, as I've really only heard their bigger hits. ^_^
Oh yeh, I've only ever heard Julie on headphones ^_^
Oh yeh, I do that too Caryn, but I was listneing to Prof Dum Dum's show before this, so i didn't miss it.

Like this Black Messiah song...
  4:25am
Julie:

Sorry I don't have the credits with me, but I don't think she was well-known
  4:26am
Matt from Springfield:

@G: I love classic rock, and being kind of traditional like that I think you had it right--always try to be a bit of Bowie when you're a rocker! And piano playing and Kinks style stories always help.
  4:26am
pierre:

it is King Penguin, croque madame with an egg, croque monsieur without...
  4:27am
King Penguin:

Caryn that's the archives are for. What time zone are you in?
  4:27am
Andrew:

oooh this song is great, wicked annabella....great guitar
  4:27am
Julie:

shhh with the classic rock moniker
  4:28am
(-_-):

Morning Julie and everyone.

I've been listening to quite a lot of Austra since Julies plug last week and I must say i like a lot. The Sparks album is also quite out there. Whats the update on the session.
  4:28am
King Penguin:

Oh i know that. But that's about it.
  4:28am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Thanks anyhow! Though she does kinda sound like the mother's voice on "Come Dancing".

Oooh, sorry Julie, um, "Clay rock"? "Granddad rock"? :D
  4:29am
Julie:

No word from Austra last I heard they were in Iceland
  4:30am
Caryn:

@KP: I'm GMT+2. The problem with the archives is I have a new computer that I'm still working out and it refuses to play the archives. I can only listen to the live flash stream.
  4:31am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: Thanks, I didn't know there was a "croque madame"--in America there is a Reuben sandwich (with corned beef and sauerkraut), and a Rachel sandwich (with pastrami and coleslaw).
  4:31am
Matt from Springfield:

This one goes out to Andrew!
  4:31am
King Penguin:

Always go with the Madame otherwise it's just jambone y fromage.
  4:31am
Andrew:

wow this is very...70s rock...sort of um..deep purple? i cant think of the band...
they really did vary a lot!
  4:31am
(-_-):

Yes I think they are coming to London as well.

No chance of seeing them. Had a little baby daughter last Friday! In search of that special name.

@Julie you usually play a lot of women singers in your show and I am always on the lookout for names. Any favs?
  4:33am
King Penguin:

Beat around the bush in Australia!
  4:33am
Andrew:

Hi (-_-)

Didn't know about this song ^_^
They're singing about my country, hehe
  4:34am
Matt from Springfield:

Congrats (-_-)!
Um, Annabella? :)

Are you looking for older, elegant names or a more modern, stark name?
  4:34am
ausmanx:

okay, you played Australia, so time for me to come on board here... evening, all, it's 7.30 pm here...
  4:34am
Julie:

@Matt stop it..that's the reason some people tried to talk me out of this show
  4:34am
Julie:

Hi ya Aus!
  4:35am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi ausmanx!
No one ignores the Kinks---in Aus-tra-li-a!
  4:35am
King Penguin:

wow that is intense playing from Dave in my right speaker
  4:36am
Andrew:

good time to show up ausmanx ^_^
  4:36am
King Penguin:

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!
  4:36am
Matt from Springfield:

@KP YES! The left channel is keeping the song grounded with a rhythm, the right channel is freakin' out!
  4:37am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie It's these labels I tell ya, someday they're gonna bring the whole world down.
  4:37am
(-_-):

@Matt no preferance really.
  4:37am
King Penguin:

Not familiar with this.. Awesome Stones like jam here
  4:38am
King Penguin:

got new Mac and new bose speakers. Sounds fantastic.
  4:38am
King Penguin:

Oh god, Big Black Smoke .Great.
  4:39am
Matt from Springfield:

Great selection of Kinks songs! All of them lesser known catalogue tracks or else an alternate version of a better known. (Monos especially!)
  4:40am
pierre:

@king penguin : i agree, three kind of protein, is better than two…

@ Matt from Springfield : pastrami, corned beef, sauerkraut, coleslaw… whoa great ingredients… croque madame feel a bit sad next to this
  4:41am
Julie:

He does this thing far too well
  4:41am
King Penguin:

Yes Matt. not only unknown, unknown and great .. That's the find.
  4:42am
King Penguin:

Yes Matt. not only unknown, unknown and great .. That's the find.
  4:42am
King Penguin:

hahaaha
  4:43am
ausmanx:

nothing from Muswell Hillbillies yet, Julie? my favourite, other than Village Green... still reckon you should do a Robyn Hitchcock show though. I'll help to program!
  4:43am
Julie:

Oh no worries, I got Muswell coming up later
  4:44am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre Cheer up! Reubens and croques are really the same family, I enjoy any sandwich with good ingredients.
  4:46am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre I was going to say it's funny how an egg makes it "madame"; a few days ago on English Wikipedia the featured article was a TV episode titled "Mother and Child Reunion", named after a Paul Simon song. He named the song after a Chinese dish of chicken and egg--"mother and child reunion"!
  4:47am
King Penguin:

Actuall Pierre, best meal i had in PArsis was at the Invalides. Piece of terrible pizza under a mountain of melted brie.
  4:48am
King Penguin:

Mother and child reunion .That is funny
  4:49am
King Penguin:

When they are 70? Next weeK?
  4:50am
King Penguin:

It's hard to believe last tour and album was in 1993.
  4:50am
Andrew:

his underpants sound good
  4:51am
King Penguin:

What was that sound?
  4:51am
King Penguin:

Yer welcome.
  4:52am
King Penguin:

Andrew: his underpants sound good
Ha ahahaha ha haha!
  4:53am
Andrew:

^_^
  4:55am
King Penguin:

He slashed Dave's head open!
  4:55am
Andrew:

he really does have an aussie sounding accent....or more so, i guess a lot of aussies sound like him...
  4:56am
Julie:

I guess it's a south London thing
  4:58am
King Penguin:

God two hours already Time flies. Hey still on 94%.
  4:59am
King Penguin:

har har
  4:59am
King Penguin:

What a rake!
  5:00am
Andrew:

yeh I know...it goes too fast when it's a good show O_Q

it didn't move when I pledged mine, maybe it's borked
  5:01am
King Penguin:

Juie''s song. Love this version.
  5:01am
Julie:

Let's get that number to move..Make KEN raise my goal again
  5:02am
Matt from Springfield:

Julie said how she didn't meet Terry last time in London.
Did you make sure you were at Waterloo Station during a sunset???
  5:02am
King Penguin:

Bye Bye.
  5:03am
pierre:

@ King Penguin : Melted Brie! sounds terribly superior! I'll buy myself some within the hour.

@ Matt : that's cute, poetic, and dark funny
  5:03am
Matt from Springfield:

Love this version as well, with the chorus backing him.
Bye Bye KP, make sure to catch this Archive!
  5:04am
King Penguin:

  5:12am
Caryn:

BTW, Fred, if you're still there, I've translated all the Latin (well, the ones I could make out from the photos) in the catacomb pics.
  5:12am
Julie:

Good morning Dave & T-Zero
  5:14am
Julie:

what's nice about this show..is I can pull all the records back in the same place :)
  5:15am
T-Zero:

Morning, Julie. Been here while doing work in the background...
And I just read an NYT article where they actually referred to Matthew Herbert as writing "pop music". o~O
  5:15am
Julie:

Where's Kitty this morning?
  5:16am
Andrew:

ducks on the wall ^_^ hehe
Hi T-Zero & Dave B
  5:16am
fred von helsing:

@caryn OH COOL !
  5:17am
T-Zero:

Hi, Andrew... Hey, is your time an hour behind Sydney?
  5:17am
fred von helsing:

Kitty is chasing ducks
  5:18am
Andrew:

did they release an album yearly>? they have so many it seems
  5:18am
Dave B:

Ray Davies is playing the Beacon (NYC) 20 November. I might just have to go. (it's right down the block)
  5:18am
Julie:

Dave himself couldn't say how many records they put out
  5:18am
Julie:

@Dave I've got my ticket!
  5:20am
Andrew:

  5:21am
Julie:

Gosh I should play Victoria..if I have time
  5:22am
T-Zero:

@Andrew: Right! Forgot! You'd told me about Triple Zed and was listening to their morning show, which made me think you were in Qnsld
  5:24am
T-Zero:

Play what you want, Julie ;) I admit I wasn't sure about having 3 hours of Kinks but this has worked. (I do like them btw, just wasn't sure but 3 hours worth at once)
  5:24am
Andrew:

triple Z? i dont know that one.

oohh this hatred song is a good one
  5:25am
Caryn:

@Fred: I sent a message about it on Facebook to the Fred who posted the pics, hoping it's you. So I can give you the translations that way.
  5:26am
Julie:

Dave -- email me, k?
  5:26am
T-Zero:

@Andrew... Hmmm. If not you, wonder who was telling me about that lol (Brisbane 4zzzz 102.1)
  5:26am
Julie:

yeah how appropriate
  5:28am
Andrew:

mmm maybe ausmanx?

I could easily go 6 hours of kinks after hearing all these ^_^
  5:28am
Julie:

Yes, homework, go listen to more
  5:29am
Dave B:

Will do
  5:30am
T-Zero:

Andrew, Yeah, that's probably who it was... had to be if not you lol I think you're the only two from down under I know on here
  5:30am
Julie:

Everyone sing along....Oh demon alcohol...
  5:30am
Matt from Springfield:

This is the one from Muswell Hillbillies I know best!
  5:30am
ausmanx:

yeah, Brisbane is an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne cos they don't go onto summer time at all. some people say brisbane is about a century behind actually, but that's a bit unfair, it's quite a cool place...
  5:31am
Julie:

I picked Acute Schizophrenia first but decided I like this one better
  5:32am
T-Zero:

Hi ausmanx. That station was pretty good at the time I was tuned in. Around 6 to 10am in Qnsld I think. The only other time it was a little too heavy for me at the time.
  5:34am
ausmanx:

zzz is a fine station... more ameteurish than FMU, but the music's pretty good. like RRR in Melbourne. sydney has FBI radio...
  5:34am
(mta) Tony:

Fantastic show, Julie; great selections.
  5:34am
T-Zero:

.... anyway, I was trying to adjust my world clocks since daytime went into effect. Before there wasn't the time difference so it threw me off when it changed.
  5:34am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie That's a well-known BBC announcer--I always remember him for ending a live performance of Fotheringay with: "Gypsy Dave - Fotheringay style!" A great soundbite, the way he says it!
  5:35am
Andrew:

My friend lived in brisbane for a couple of years, he said it was nice.

What year is Muswell Hillbillies?
  5:36am
Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew 1971, if I remember.
  5:36am
Julie:

Thank you tony! Hard choices! Was that Brian Matthews?
  5:36am
fred von helsing:

hmm I don't see it yet but the other Fred isn't on Faceborg so it's gotta show up sooner or later !
  5:37am
Julie:

yes 1971 was hard to find on the record
  5:37am
Julie:

who wants to make my widget rise?
  5:38am
fred von helsing:

Why do I get the feeling that the Kinks all have pix of Dorian Gray in their hallways ?
  5:38am
fred von helsing:

saucy, she is :-P
  5:38am
Caryn:

@Fred: sent it after last weeks show, so it should be there (it's a different name, since Caryn is my middle name)
  5:38am
Dave B:

Brian Matthews it is/was
  5:38am
Dave B:

Brian Matthews it is/was
  5:39am
Julie:

Ray has SO much energy, and he looks great.
  5:39am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Thanks! That sounds about right..
Brian Matthew: "veteran English broadcaster, who became well known in the 1960s. He is still broadcasting on radio for the BBC, having presented Sounds of the 60s since 1990, often employing the same vocabulary and the same measured delivery he used in previous decades."
  5:39am
T-Zero:

RRR I've listened to, but could feed a feed url for FBI, just if I listened through the browser (which I rather not do)
  5:39am
fred von helsing:

um erm better try again ? sez FredB
  5:40am
Dave B:

(double post echo courtesy iOS)
  5:40am
T-Zero:

... could not find...
  5:40am
T-Zero:

Ok, not too crazy about Drift Away
  5:40am
Matt from Springfield:

And thanks Dave B as well!
You should come here more often, help keep a "3 continent comments board" with me! :)
  5:41am
Andrew:

Was going to say, The two tracks off Phobia have made me want to get that album ^_^
  5:43am
Caryn:

@ok, Fred, sent a message again
  5:43am
Dave B:

I might just Matt... though most likely just the last hour. Sleep gets in the way of my music consumption...
  5:47am
Andrew:

yeh, sleep....sleep vs music...
  5:47am
Matt from Springfield:

I know, there's just too much good music out there, and my body *arrogantly* insists on sleeping, unconscious, for a large chunk of every day!
  5:49am
T-Zero:

Indeed, that's such an inconvenience, Matt
  5:49am
Julie:

A little money nudge would be nice. I know, I'm greedy when it comes to WFMU. But where else could I do a show like this? When the guys are still alive!
  5:49am
fred von helsing:

dunno, @caryn, no message and I checked my privacy settings... wot the heck is going on ? just in case, you can find me via the lists of dj meghan or dj keili
  5:50am
Andrew:

ah, some days, if i didnt have to eat & other stuff, and work...you could just listen to WFMU all day
  5:52am
Andrew:

you know, some of the other shows are still in the 10s in %? I pledged to one who had only 1% last week
  5:53am
Julie:

Yeah I know I don't get it at all! Hopefully the last couple weeks will treat them well!
  5:55am
Julie:

Gonna try to squeeze in one more song. Thanks for listening you guys! Even those not on the comment board.
  5:55am
T-Zero:

Yeah, me too. One I have in mind in particular... Makes me feel bad as I love the show
  5:55am
Andrew:

maybe it depends on the music...

been a great night of music tonight though ^_^
I've decided i'll get an album from each decade...
  5:56am
Julie:

I barely touched on Low Budget. It is a GREAT one
  5:58am
Matt from Springfield:

Thank you for such a well-researched Kinksfest! You've enlightened everyone I'm sure!

Have a great day everyone! Glad to have so many on the board tonight!
  5:58am
Andrew:

yeh, unfortunately i can't afford to give heaps. I figure If i give 10 to each show I like, it all helps.

Thanks Julie, awesome show! ^_^
Thanks everyone else, good chat ^_^
  5:59am
Caryn:

@Fred: well, apart from one piece, all of them were quotes from either the Bible or Virgil.
  5:59am
T-Zero:

Take care...
  6:00am
Julie:

thanks everyone!!!
  9:50am
Lizardner Dave:

  8:35pm
Julie:

I totally agree! I could do a ton more...maybe somewhere down the road.
  11:34pm
Holly in NC:

  11:31pm
