Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Favoriting January 5, 2012: Occupy NDAA - Penn Station Conversations

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This episode was recorded during an Occupy Wall Street action at Grand Central Station on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2011. The activists participating were drawing attention to the NDAA - National Defense Authorization Act, which you can read more about here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Defense_Authorization_Act_for_Fiscal_Year_2012

Later in the episode, I went to a General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street at 100 WIlliams Street. Finally, there are two lengthy interviews which take place at Penn Station in Manhattan.

I have been wrestling with some technical problems associated with my continuing efforts to enter the digital realm. These problems have been irritating, to say the least. I will continue to try and improve the sound quality and I appreciate your patience and support in this endeavor.

  6:07pm

  6:08pm
kata:

  6:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Occupy Comment Boards!

Hello and Happy New Year Clay!
  6:08pm

Sounds like Clay saw Joey Boots...

Caryn:

Hello Clay & comments board!
  6:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey listeners! Caryn, david, kata, slugluv, Ken!
  6:11pm
david:

notice how they kept increasing the amount and volume of track announcements at GCT as the action went on
  6:12pm
Clay:

Hello everyone. I'm reading your words.
  6:13pm
kata:

woah, this is intense Clay!
  6:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

@david: "Thank you for your cooperation"!
  6:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

Brendan from OWS probably deserves an episode dedicated to him at some point, he's everywhere Clay goes!
  6:15pm
david:

I think Lauren was one of the folks assaulted in the Zuccotti encampment early on...
  6:16pm
Cecile:

how many people are still out there?
  6:17pm
Clay:

You mean listeners, Cecile?
  6:17pm
Cecile:

no. protesters
  6:17pm
david:

grand central action from the top of the steps, for later reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI3EhHkH6qw
  6:19pm
david:

Cecile - there's no permanent encampment in NYC like before but new year's actions and this grand central action were certainly 4-figure turnouts...
  6:19pm
Cecile:

that's very good for winter and holidays!
  6:20pm
Cecile:

Clay, you should boil this down to a 2-hour disc set and send it out. This isn't being covered at all in the news.
  6:20pm
Ike:

Hey Clay, if you didn't see my comments at the end of Fabio's show, try a vaporizer. They're cheap. And apparently easy to clean with vinegar (hmm, I need to clean mine). I always found humidifiers to be very difficult to clean (YMMV)....
  6:21pm
Cecile:

I have a humidifier with a simple compartment - just swish it out and it's great. If you get a humidifier, keep it as simple as humanly possible.
  6:23pm
Cecile:

also, all this unison chanting is like being at Mass my two time a year..
  6:23pm
Cecile:

it's pretty powerful.
  6:23pm
Listener Dave from Seattle:

Just put a pan with some water in it on the radiator. As told to me by my mom.
  6:24pm
hallowed by my name:

this reciatation sounds like "our father, who art in heaven..."
  6:24pm
Cecile:

any way, be well everyone.
Listener Dave that also works in a pinch.
  6:24pm
Clay:

cecile and Ike - i'm happy you stpooed by! I'm lobbying for the vaporizer, ike. an horrid tan one. cecile, i hear you on the Mass thing.
  6:25pm
Clay:

stpooed!
  6:25pm
Ike:

@LDfS, I tried that. Never worked too well for me. Radiator didn't get hot enough, I don't think. Sometimes I'd end up w/a strange orange rust too. So if you try it, don't use a good pan.
  6:25pm
Cecile:

yeah, hallowed. Like the old liturgy. Not the new, weird, legalistic liturgy.

Anyway, I must go. Take care.
  6:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Interesting how Brookfield keeps re-grouping and disappearing (like Blackwater/Xe/whatever now)
  6:25pm
Caryn:

Bye, Cecile!
  6:26pm
Clay:

By Cecile!
  6:27pm
Clay:

buy buy!
  6:27pm
Ike:

Oh yeah Clay, the off-whitish Vicks vaporizers are horrid indeed, ugly as Schlitz. But they work well.
  6:27pm
Caryn:

pie pie!
  6:32pm
kata:

This journalist guy is right -- they've been doing this a while and are now just making it official by passing the law.
  6:32pm
seang:

time to fight back big time
  6:33pm
Clay:

Nice to hear from you Kata and Seang.
  6:33pm
david:

exactly, kata. the argument goes, "well, the president said that he won't do it when he signed..." Well, they were already doing it!
  6:35pm
kata:

Obama is a zombie.
  6:35pm
Clay:

I need the optional windscreen.
  6:35pm
Caryn:

My great-grandfather and his brother both spent decades of their lives in prison for their political views. Great-grandpa still managed to be a member of parliament and fight for his beliefs. Great-granduncle died after 2 years in an internment camp. In our family, you learned early on about the importance of protest and fighting for your rights. The NDAA is just making the existing status quo official. Here's hoping the general population becomes aware of what has been done to their rights.
  6:37pm
Clay:

Thanks, Caryn. Inspiring words. Peace.
  6:37pm
david:

Ydanis Rodriguez has gotten arrested once or twice, I think...
  6:43pm
kata:

thanks for sharing Caryn, you're right!
  6:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Romney = Republican Kerry--I was thinking the same impression! Points to Clay for being the first in the media I heard say that!
  6:44pm
Clay:

Yes, Matt! High Four!
  6:45pm
kata:

the more I listen to this coverage, the more it seems the conservatives use the same words; "socialism" and "entitlements" and tow the same party line, while the folks involved in OWS you've interviewed are so different from eachother and each have a unique point of view and way to express their minds.
  6:46pm
kata:

than again, I am biased ;)
  6:47pm
Caryn:

If you look at the current candidates, it's not so much "the lesser of two evils" but the "evil of two lessers"...
  6:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

(Four!)
  6:50pm
northguineahills:

I was thinking Romney was the Republican Dukakis.
  6:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: Even better--more of a blowout! ;)

With so many divergent opinions this year, there could be a major political split. If Romney wins the nomination, a third party conservative might "Bull Moose" him (see: Teddy Roosevelt, 1912). I've also pondered a 4-way split like 1948.
  6:54pm
david:

I'd could see a 4-way contest too, Matt.
  6:56pm
Caryn:

@kata: gotta agree with you on that. Also, if you ask most people what percentage of the budget is spent on welfare or foreign aid, people's answers tend to be several hundred times the actual number. I kinda think the conservative view was best spelled out on The Daily Show: http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-august-18-2011/world-of-class-warfare---the-poor-s-free-ride-is-over?xrs=share_fb
  6:58pm
kata:

I'm sure I saw that cuz I'm a Daily Show addict ! :)

thanks Clay -- great show again! until next time everyone...
  6:59pm
Night Al:

I never get tired of seeing the International Space Station fly over.
  6:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ambassador to the homeless--The Dusty Show has always been great and finding these amazing people around NYC and sharing them with us.
  7:00pm
Caryn:

Great show again, Clay!
  7:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Have a great night everyone!
Another fine show for the tally!
  7:00pm
kme in chi:

Thank you for another wonderful show Clay!
  3:05pm
Clay-Dohâ„¢:

Thank you for your comments. I am still struggling with the digital format. To me, this show sounded a bit muddy and distant. Someone told me she misses all the sound effects. I'm afraid I have drifted far away from old Dustyland. Not sure I can find my way home. Love you all. HNY. Clay NYC 2012 - feeling every second of that sixteenth minute.
