Nathan:

Afternoon Duane!
  12:07pm
Duane:

Good Afternoon Nathan..Hello Everybody! Happy Wednesday!
  12:07pm
Cecile:

Hi, Duane!
I know you might have some insight - did anyone know that Don Cornelius was that despondent? Was he gravely ill?
  12:09pm
Duane:

Cecile: Hi. You know..as far as i Know, everyone's pretty shocked in my twitter world.
  12:09pm
kata:

good morning Duane and Cecile and Nathan; movin' real slow at the junction today ;)
  12:09pm
Cecile:

mine, too!
  12:12pm
kata:

It's only 9am here, but usually I have a bit more pep... maybe the solar flares are zapping us of energy?
  12:13pm
kata:

oh, nevermind :) I'm too out of it to comment !
  12:13pm
Duane:

Hi Kata.. Glad to hear from you. I'll do my best to kick your ass in gear:)
  12:15pm
kata:

danke shoen Duane :) !!
  12:20pm
jorge:

Oh wow. Some things don't need a house version. Cocteau Twins is one of them.
  12:20pm
Duane:

Oh Jorge.:)
  12:21pm
Ike:

Opposite reaction to Jorge! This remix is the best thing since sliced infinity!!!
  12:22pm
jorge:

What? : )
  12:22pm
Nathan:

I don't mind this Cocteau Twins remix... and I've got pretty much every record them and their cohorts have been involved with. That Foggy Notion Velvet Underground sample turned R&B song that Ken played last hour I did not like however.
  12:24pm
robyn:

hey everybody, hi duane. what's up with all these music deaths recently. knock if off, people.
  12:25pm
Duane:

I agree Robyn. The Don Cornelius is really a head scratcher to me
  12:27pm
jorge:

Don't mind me. I'm just being a fogey. That "What?" Was meant for Duane, btw. Thx for the music as always D.
  12:27pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Hello Duane, hello listeners. Loving the show. Sad about Don Cornelius. I'm confused by his suicide, too. In interviews, even more recent ones, he seemed to have a positive attitude and had his s#!t together. And then there's the upcoming film. I immediately thought "diagnosis of terminal illness". Whatever the case, he'll be missed, and may he rest in peace.
  12:27pm
Cecile:

Got Silver Convention?
  12:29pm
Duane:

I might Cecile..this is a really cool SC knock-off nonetheless tho
  12:30pm
Cecile:

it is! I love me some Silver Convention.

Wendy, that must have been it. Or he could have had something like Parkinson's, MS or Lou Gehrig's disease that would have put him in a long-drawn-out physical decline. Or it could just be the spectre of untreated depression.
  12:35pm
Caryn:

To get my mind off the Cornelius thing, I went on a search for the mystery man in Ken's Timberlake gif. If anyone cares, it's T.I. That only took an hour... But now it's no longer bugging me, which is nice.
  12:36pm
Cecile:

Thanks, Caryn. T.I. cleans up good.
  12:38pm
Caryn:

Yeah, a lot of times people hide the depression from the outside world and put up a brave front. Unless news of a disease diagnosis hits, some hidden darkness is likely.
@Cecile: no prob. And for further trivia, it's from their "My Love" music video. Which sounds interesting when played at the same time as Maximum Balloon & Queen Samantha.
  12:41pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Good point about the depression angle. If it's so, that makes it worse, my sadness about Cornelius's demise. Depression is treatable. People shouldn't be dying from it.
  12:42pm
Nathan:

According to this Guardian story, he admitted to 'significant health issues' last year..

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/feb/01/soul-train-don-cornelius-found-dead
  12:42pm
Cecile:

But there is still such a huge stigma about it. Even now.
  12:45pm
Cecile:

Oooh, Nathan, thanks. That explains a whole lot.
  12:46pm
Caryn:

Exactly, there's a stigma to this day. Not to mention the real-world issues it creates (such as losing your health insurance). Or just not wanting to seem like someone who can't hack it in our modern society, where, unless you're perfectly healthy and always willing to accept more pressure and work harder, you are made to feel like a leech or a loser. And for some people, it's just too hard to admit they need help. Or make their family and friends worry. So many reasons...
  12:46pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Cecile, you're right. And that's part of the problem. Once the majority of the populace sees depression as a legitimate medical condition and not a character flaw, we might see more people getting treatment for it, and fewer people dying from it. As a person who has dealt with mental illness my entire life, I have a very personal anger about the situation.
  12:49pm
Caryn:

The health problems were in 2009, not last year. Although, who knows about last year. Maybe the problems continued. It will remain a mystery for now, until more is known.
  12:49pm
robyn:

our mental health awareness/system in the US is terrible. I just moved to Texas and their mental health system seems particularly bad.
  12:50pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Caryn, good points in your 12:46 comment. The modern world demands so much unhealthy behavior (mentally and physically) to enjoy full participation in it, if you're even privileged enough to fully participate.
  12:53pm
efd:

fwiw, Don Cornelius was always known to be pretty private at least when it came to giving interviews. I don't think it would be that surprising to learn at some point that he was dealing with illness, or multiple illnesses, that the general public didn't know about.

Great show, Duane. Just the right amount of soul, I'd say. :)
  12:53pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Duane, I hope you don't take that complainer's words to heart! I looooove that your show is so soul-full, even though you do mix it up in the free-form way. I love nearly every show on FMU, but I have often wished for more soul... and then you got on the schedule and my wish was granted. Your show kicks butt and I say NAY to the nay-sayers.
  12:54pm
still b/p:

Why would someone bother to send a complaint message about the soul in this show? "I don't like it. Don't do it."....?

I like it. Do it do it.
  12:55pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Do it!
C'mon and do it 'til you're satisfied.
Whatever it is.
  12:56pm
Caryn:

You don't like soul, don't listen to soul. Simple solution. Plenty of radio stations or DJs I don't listen to. No skin off my back, or theirs.
  12:58pm
Duane:

Thanx Guys..I was actually pretty bemused that someone would actually gooutof their way to complain about too much soul:) It's like "turn down that crazy music with that woogly beat" I'll play some skynrd instead:)
  1:01pm
robyn:

americans generally have such a difficult time cultivating political awareness. it's sad. (just reflecting on the al sharpton interview).
  1:02pm
Nathan:

Duane speaking of soul. Here's one you haven't played on the show yet.. actually never been played on WFMU but stumbled across this a few days ago and it's a corker (and you like edits)

James Brown - I'm Satisfied (Underdog Edit)
http://youtu.be/cPQ8ddWC0Pg
  1:02pm
Caryn:

Yeah. Hell, every DJ is bound to play a track you don't like, or even have a show where almost all the music is not to your taste. If I usually listen to a show and that happens, hell, I might go "well, that track was sucky" or "don't care for this bit, but to each their own". But it would never occur to me to try and tell a DJ what to do. "Yeah, Duane, enough with the soul. Can't you play 3 hours of Mongolian throat singing instead? Because that's what I want."
  1:03pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

When I see people bitch on the playlist about what the DJ is playing, it bums me out. Nobody is forcing anyone to listen to anything, and who needs that negativity? it's like going to a live show of some sort and yelling "BOOOOO!" because you don't like it. Just leave, already. Being a DJ is not easy, and those who complain have likely never been on that side of the wheels of steel, as it were.
  1:04pm
Duane:

Hey Nathan..Yes you're right I haven't played that one and it's great..
  1:07pm
Caryn:

@Wendy: I don't really mind someone not liking an individual track (of course, it's not particularly polite to the DJs), as long as they are just making a statement of their opinion and not telling the DJ they are wrong to play it. But if someone complains about the overall tone of a show or tries to make the DJ feel like they've made a mistake playing something... Oh, hell no!
  1:09pm
seang:

this song is hitting the spot
  1:09pm
still b/p:

Saw a different but great "I don't like it. Don't do it," pronouncement yesterday. Someone wrote a moan-piece about debate regarding e-book pros, cons and impacts. He don't want to hear it no mo'. "There's really no need for a discussion about the technology any longer." Sorry to bore and bother you. 500 years of a massively important presence of printed books in culture and history...but let's wrap up the gab about the shift in a relative fifteen minutes or so, hah? Okay. That attitude is one for the...whattayacallits.
  1:09pm
Stanley:

There's soul music and there's the soul music you hear on WFMU. I rest my case.
  1:10pm
Listener Comments Thingy:

I have an on/off feature. Somebody turned it on. Guess they knew what would happen and were prepared to deal with it.
  1:10pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Caryn, for me, I don't want to read on the playlist that someone doesn't like something the DJ is doing. I mean, who cares? How is that adding to the conversation? Sure, people are free to write whatever the hell they want, but who wants to read anyone whining? If you don't like the song, change the channel. The DJ is not your jukebox.
  1:12pm
robyn:

oh man, i just had MBV in my head yesterday. so good. always begging for just the right sound system though.
  1:13pm
judge:

Counsel, give your case a woogly shake, before you rest it.
  1:14pm
Cecile:

That's such a great cover of when you sleep
  1:15pm
jonathan:

great cover! who is this cat's eye?
  1:20pm
Caryn:

@Jonathan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%27s_Eyes
  1:20pm
Cecile:

I think these lyrics are completely free-association.
  1:40pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I didn't really watch Soul Train when it was on. Seems that I missed out on something nice. RIP, Don Cornelius.
  1:42pm
Duane:

They got lots and lots of footage on youtube Ken..truly an American treasure that show!
  1:46pm
David Baker:

Wow what a track - anyone know where I can download the Soul Train... Soul Train (Danny Krivit Re edit)" by Soul Train Gang - thanks
  1:46pm
Caryn:

@Ken from HP: for a start, I'd recommend this collection of pretty much every James Brown performance on "Soul Train": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsVyPAVBzRQ
45 minutes of soul goodness!
  1:47pm
Duane:

Hey David:) That track was given to me personally by Mr. Krivit about a year ago. DUnno if it's out yet, but he said it was coming soon!
  1:49pm
Duane:

The OG version of SOul Train theme is pretty common though..and its FIRE!
  1:52pm

  2:40pm
kat330:

"Recloose"? I have a tag that's a take on the "frontal lobotomy (I first heard said by Tom Waits): I'd rather be a recluse than a loose wreck.
  2:42pm
kata:

if we were at a party, I would bring you several drinks right now Duane.
