Listener comments!

  12:08pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Good afternoon Duane!
  12:08pm
Cecile:

Hi, Duane!
Wasn't that Freddy Jackson Unsung interesting? he kind of reminds me of Bobby Short - very erudite and elegant.
  12:10pm
Duane:

Hi Jan. Happy belated! Cecille: Yeah the Freddie Jackson unsung was great. I knew he was popular, but I had no idea that he sold so many records..his first two records sold 3 million plus!!
  12:12pm
Duane:

the Bobby Short analogy is on point
  12:12pm
Ike:

I really love this opening set so far!
  12:14pm
Cecile:

I was working in a record store when his first came out. We could not keep the albums or singles in stock. And yet, the record companies were pushing things like Mick Jagger solo albums. And yet things like Freddie, Gary Morris's Plain Brown Wrapper, and every Metallica album flew off our shelves. THat's why Soundscan had to happen.
  12:14pm
still b/p:

Among other regrets/lost chances associated with NY visits being too few: never seeing Short at the Carlyle.
  12:14pm
robyn:

morning Duane. enjoying the set. listened to the stuff i missed last week and enjoyed the ali/king/stevie wonder...and your decidedly creepy porn story. yeeeeeesh.
  12:15pm
Cecile:

How he discusses his sexuality is a lot like Short too - from what I've read Short had fulfilling relationships with both men and women and never let himself get pegged as anything but Bobby Short.
  12:16pm
Cecile:

He seems like a perfectly delightful man.
  12:16pm
Duane:

Hahaha..Thanx Robyn.Thanx Ike. Yeah Cecile..I remember Tower Records massive displays of Mick Jaggers'"She's got a have it" album..and nobody i knew owned it..or even liked it
  12:19pm
Cecile:

I KNOW! It was ridiculous.
  12:22pm
Duane:

still b/p: Yeah I always wished i got to see Short doing Cabaret in NYC..I was able to see Blossom Dearie a few times however..and those shows were always great
  12:27pm
holland oats:

fon-kay randy newman!
  12:27pm
kat330:

Never heard this Newman cover -- cool, Duane!
  12:28pm
jill:

Hey Duane, etal.
you have a year on this Etta tune?
  12:28pm
kat330:

I must say Etta sounds very randy.
  12:28pm
Duane:

'76
  12:30pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

"Let's Burn Down The Cornfield" is another great James track from the same period
  12:33pm
kata:

good morning all!
  12:33pm
kat330:

Guess we could tie the earlier Bobby convo with Newman through the song "Short People."
  12:34pm
Duane:

HI Kata:) kat330:*rimshot*
  12:36pm
kat330:

Yeah, all the kool kats are here.
  12:38pm
kat330:

And now a shoutout to all the cool herbs growing in our garden.
  12:40pm
dale:

awesome scarborough fair
  12:44pm
Cecile:

oooh, I'm feeling a Baskets of Light Pentangle vibe here.
  12:45pm
kat330:

The sitar is a nice touch.
  12:45pm
kat330:

I should say a nice "light" touch.
  12:46pm
dale:

jacqui had her own iteration of pentangle without bert or john. can't imagine it was any comparison
  12:47pm
kat330:

I like how it doesn't overwhelm and take center stage -- unless that's just my system.
  12:47pm
holland oats:

i missed jansch last time he came to nyc (w neil young in tow) - guess i'll catch him next time...
  12:48pm
kata:

yeah kat330 :)
  12:50pm
Shields and Yarnel:

Always enjoy your show, Duane.
  12:50pm
dale:

you'll have to catch him playing the harp holland...he died a few months ago. i dunno if renbourn tours
  12:51pm
Mike East:

Whoa - thought I was listening to Irene's show for a second there.
  12:52pm
Head East:

We lost our singer to Petra. The rest is Christian Rock history.
  12:53pm
Cecile:

I always think the Giants are strangely underrated. They kind of sneak up on their Super Bowls.
  12:54pm
Persistent Coughlin:

Believe in ELI.
  12:55pm
Duane:

That's very true Cecille. They're never boring team to follow..no mater how frustrating the season
  12:56pm
Cecile:

I was a big Phil Sims fan.
Just a surgeon with the short passes.

I'm not a wagering woman, but when the Giants get to the final game, they don't mess around.
  12:58pm
Lizardner Dave:

I always wondered what the name of this track was when I heard it in Asian fusion restaurants.
  1:00pm
?:

It won't be easy beating the Pats twice in the Super Bowl. Giants will be lucky to get it done. Cecile, if memory serves, you are from Minneapolis? Not a Vikes fan? North Stars? Twinkies? Dinkytown? Dylan? Brown Institute of Radio Technology? First Avenue Bar? Prince? Replacements?
  1:01pm
kat330:

Ugggh, if something beats my distaste for Rod Stewart, it's football (the American variety). Mais, vive la difference!
  1:02pm
Eddie The Eagle:

C'mon, Rod with the Faces was good stuff.
  1:02pm
Duane:

kat330: I think the Super bowl Halftime shows has both beat:)
  1:03pm
Sean:

Is halftime Madonna this year?
  1:04pm
kat330:

@Duane, Heh! You got that right. Here it is right in Hoosierland, and then that.....
  1:04pm
kata:

where I sit, I am surrounded by an office. And the happenings in said office are frequently cutting into my headphone time. So wrong. Been enjoying the doses I've gotten so far though! :0
  1:06pm
Cecile:

Puppy Bowl, man.

?
I'm in Mpls and I'm a fan of the Timberwolves, 1st Avenue, Highland Park and Paul Metzger. Ha! Brown Insitute. Their motto should have been "Training 400 people for the 9 radio jobs in Minnesota every year."
  1:06pm
kat330:

Let's hope they construct the stage a lot sturdier than at the State Fair this summer. But I heard something how she'd already injured herself rehearsing in NYC?
  1:08pm
Duane:

Apparently Madonna's gonna do vogue with old skool members of house of ninja...so they say in the rags! And yeah Eddie..Rod & the Faces are great!
  1:08pm
northguineahills:

Enjoying the Third Wave....
  1:09pm
kat330:

@Eddie: The Rod Stewart joke dingus has been all over various playlists, so I was just using that as a reference point. :)
  1:09pm
Duane:

thank you ngh..that's George Duke on piano
  1:10pm
Miss Tury:

Nice Sunshine Pop, Duane. Just picked up a mint 45 by The Collage last weekend. Love it. $2. Also love Queen Anne's Lace. GREAT show. I love you. My wife is ecstatic about your show.
  1:10pm
Cecile:

Willie Ninja.
Madonna says "F*ck the House of Labeja."
  1:11pm
kata:

there is some pretty embarrassing footage of Madonna's live performances from recent years on youtube. One from Germany stands out. Just awful. Hope she gets her shit together.
  1:11pm
Ciccone Aged:

Vogue is my favorite Madge tune. I think it's the production. Jellybean? Also ... Dress You Up.
  1:12pm
Cecile:

ah! Karin Krog! She sang a lot with Archie Shepp, is this Archie on this cut?
  1:13pm
Yanni:

George Duke, ex-Zappa. He went all smooth jazz with Grover Washington, Jr. and Kenny G. Man's gotta make a living, I guess.
  1:14pm
kata:

oh, you are cheering me up Duane, thank you!
  1:14pm
Gene:

Loved that distorted Slingerland intro.
  1:17pm
Duane:

Yanni: I like Duke's disco and funk stuff tho!
  1:17pm
Clem:

Oooh. My psychic friend, Dionne! Thanques!
  1:18pm
Duane:

kata/ciccone aged: Does Madge ever perform "Angel" liveanymore?..that's always been my fave..it's so bubblegum!
  1:19pm
Mike East:

Love this Dionne Warwick edit!
  1:20pm
Hank XVI:

THis sounds like Sceptor-era Dionne. Love that, and Sceptor-era BJ Thomas.
  1:20pm
Duane:

thanx Mike East!
  1:21pm
Head East:

No one remembers Jefftown Creek, our follow-up single.
  1:22pm
Elliott Easton:

I LIKED the New Cars.
  1:23pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Nice edit Bim Marx
  1:24pm
Jennique:

Oh my GOD! BUBBALICIOUS!! I actually have that commercial saved on my youtube favorites. Always thought I would cover that as a full song day if I were ever to form a band.
  1:26pm
kat330:

Just last night I was wondering why Indiana has so few famous women to tout -- it's a state that's hard on women -- and no famous female in the music biz at all that I could find in a search. Crystal Gayle lived in Wabash but was born in Kentucky, and the only others in any category are Amelia Earhart, Anne Baxter, Florence Henderson and Jane Pauley. I imagine Janet Jackson wasn't even born in Gary. Sad. I guess we deserve Madonna.
  1:26pm
kata:

I've never seen her live, and can't call myself an aficionado, so I have no idea what kind of set she does these days. My personal early years fave is "Burning Up." Surely Ciccone must know ?
  1:27pm
kat330:

And Duane, this is a nice stroll indeed.
  1:28pm
Cecile:

Madonna was born and raised in Michigan.

Here's a song I'd love to see covered.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlXA4tS9pl8

My favorite Madonna song is get into the groove.
  1:30pm
Patrick:

Great Bim Marx edit. Really enjoyed that song here in Germany. Like your show, Duane!
  1:30pm
kata:

also, Lucky Star has a brilliant first several bars...
  1:30pm
kat330:

Yes, Cecile, I knew where Madonna was from.
  1:31pm
Cecile:

Well, you were mentioning Indiana, and I got a little mixed up. Sorry...
  1:31pm
Patrick:

wow duane, this temptations song is really hitting to spot. thanks for playing it.
  1:32pm
kat330:

Just that Indiana deserves her for entertainment since we can't seem to produce anyone on our own -- not even cornfed.
  1:34pm
Cecile:

The MX-80 (Sound) and the Zero Boys are reasons to be proud of Indiana. The Lazy Cowgirls came from Indiana.
  1:36pm
kat330:

Don't know them -- how would they fare as s spectacular halftime show? I think there are many groups spawned from Bloomington - IU has such a fine School of Music -- but no one has hit the charts so to speak. :)
  1:38pm
Cecile:

Ha. They would be awful halftime entertainment. But I would sell a couple of limbs to see MX-80 do one of their audience baiting shows at Superbowl halftime.
  1:38pm
Jennique:

Cecile - nice Rolo song. I will add it to my fantasy cover band set list. Always thought the Riunite on Ice song was a good one too.
  1:39pm
kat330:

And I am only speaking of fame, here, not quality. Football entertainment is not often known for its quality.
  1:39pm
Cecile:

Oooh, that is a good song. Also, the "Say Yes to Martini and Rossi" song?
  1:40pm
Letterman:

Where the hell is Mellencamp? Painting?
  1:41pm
Ghost of Gipper:

Where's Rudy?
  1:44pm
kat330:

Duh (slapping head), Florence Henderson IS a singer, geez, how did that fact elude me. Perhaps she should have been chosen for the big Indianapolis halftime show. And Dave, I specifically was speaking of FEMALE Hoosiers. Plenty from the male category. Like Will Shortz.
  1:45pm
Jennique:

Duane, whenever I hear the Peggy Lee version of "I'm A Woman" I kept expecting her to say ENJOLI. You don't know how many gallons of Jean Nate perfume I bought my poor mother because of their Charlie's Angels ads.
  1:45pm
kat330:

And like Indiana, Will is hard on women. But maybe I should go back to dissing Rod Stewart....
  1:46pm
Ball Stater:

They should trot Joyce DeWitt up there.
  1:46pm
seang:

there's Rita Indiana but she's from the Dominican Republic--she rocks hard
  1:47pm
Duane:

Jennique: You and me both. I think my mother had about 10 bottles of that stuff from xmases '80-'86..haha
  1:47pm
northguineahills:

Wow! The Drop Nineteens! It feels like high school again!!
  1:48pm
Duane:

Lisa Germano's from Indiana right? What a bummer of a halftime show that'd be, huh?
  1:49pm
kat330:

Probably she spent time in Bloomington at school -- hadn't known she was born here? Where's Caryn when you need her...
  1:50pm
Joe:

How about LaToya????
  1:51pm
Jennique:

How about Harrison Ford singing and dancing a Broadway version of Raiders of the Lost Ark as Indiana Jones?
  1:51pm
kat330:

I can just picture an extravaganza with Flo doing a medley from "Song of Norway."
  1:53pm
kat330:

Harrison and Henderson, mmmmm.....
  1:55pm
Patrick:

Janet will never be invited back after her wardrobe malfunction.
  1:57pm
Patrick:

i bet it would be better...
  2:02pm
kat330:

I don't know if any of the Jackson's want to be back home again in Indiana, and yeah the wardrobe malfunction might preclude Janet's invitation. Duane, you made me do some spit takes during your comments there.
  2:04pm
AndrewK:

It's too bad the KLF aren't available.
  2:04pm
Duane:

kat330: haha! I still like the idea of Latoya!
  2:08pm
kat330:

@Patrick: I, for one, am a big fan of Grieg.
  2:08pm
The Dude from Prodigy:

ANdrewK .... or SNAP.
  2:14pm
Duane:

Snap! hahaha! Has KISS played a halftime show yet? That'd be a spectacle
  2:15pm
SNAP:

Okay, mea culpa, I'm responsible for Janet's wardrobe malfunction....
  2:18pm
AndrewK:

I was thinking about SNAP too.
  2:19pm
robyn:

hahaha! "worst halftime show ever."
  2:19pm
paul:

wow. this happened.
  2:19pm
AndrewK:

excuse me while I have this spit take
  2:20pm
AndrewK:

GWAR! Just imagine the size of the jello cannon!
  2:20pm
paul:

i was expecting this to be karaoke, but it's an actual super bowl halftime. awesome.
  2:20pm
Patrick:

bet they have asked kiss, but they wanted to much money... give it a few more years when they are on the verge of being all but forgotten im sure we will see Kiss do it.
  2:21pm
?:

anyone ever heard the Linda McCartney solo'd vocal from a Paul concert?
  2:22pm
kat330:

Cavett! At least he kept his word and came to the UCB.
  2:22pm
paul:

and this i was expecting to be that time andy kaufman was on letterman and tried begging the audience for money
  2:23pm
Patrick:

wonder if we will ever see Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young do a half time show.
  2:23pm
Cecile:

?
Yes i have. It's pretty funny. I think the Loud Family titled one album The Tape of Only Linda.
  2:24pm
AndrewK:

Kiss played Superbowl 33
  2:24pm
glenn:

ummm. i'm pretty sure kiss IS all but forgotten, and thank the baby cheebus for that.
  2:25pm
kat330:

Holy crap, I just got three issues of National Geographic in the mail all at once. Weird.
  2:25pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Sorry Duane, I'm working too hard atm to commentate...
  2:25pm
Duane:

Fuck it..Boredoms!!!
  2:28pm
kat330:

I was born at the wrong time to ever appreciate glam and face makeup rock.
  2:28pm
still b/p:

Would rumors of an planned Gene codpiece malfunction really boost or really suppress the halftime ratings?
  2:28pm
Pemberton:

Sly burned through his septum. Urban myth.
  2:29pm
kat330:

Oh, lordy!! Heh!
  2:29pm
pete:

my favorite anthem butcher
  2:30pm
Crespo:

I thought Steven Tyler's anthem was fine. There was much ragging on him.
  2:30pm
kat330:

@sbp: seriously repress.
  2:32pm
Brass Knuckles:

Steven Tyler yells. That's how he sings. Guess he wasn't doing it R&B style enough for people.
  2:34pm
kat330:

With all these halftime show suggestions, I should never be so hard on Rod the Mod, in balance.
  2:34pm
Brass Knuckles:

p.s. the star spangled banner is a really shitty song
  2:35pm
kat330:

Wasn't there a movement to replace it with "America, the Beautiful"?
  2:36pm
Patriot:

I love the anthem.
  2:37pm
kat330:

And the Pledge of Allegiance should really be amended to "One nation, under Canada" per Robin Williams.
  2:38pm
still b/p:

Many have suggested This Land Is My Land as a replacement.
  2:39pm
?:

ahhhhhh
  2:40pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Christmas is just eleven months away.
  2:40pm
kat330:

As much as I appreciate Guthrie's contributions to the American songbook, I wouldn't vote for that. Lacks some sort of gravitas, which seems fitting for sports performances, come to think of it.
  2:41pm
Patch Addams:

What about New Years? FYI, that's a little after Xmas.
  2:43pm
kat330:

@KfHP and @Patch: WTF?
  2:45pm
northguineahills:

The intro to this Elis Regina reminded me of YMO going bossa....

Soul Jazz put out a Samba School record!?!? Duane, is this new or old?

Sean in Berlin:

Que Legál Duane! Nice turn to the show. Obrigado
  2:52pm
Duane:

sorry..it's not on SOul Jazz.my bad!
  2:52pm
Caryn:

Hi all! Slight technical glitches here, but back listening. Looking back over the comments, gotta say, kat, I don't think I would be of much help on the "where was Lisa Germano born" issue. Well, any more help than a google search, that is.
"The Star Spangled Banner" is a bitch to sing. "America, the Beautiful" would work way better. Of course, some stand-up comedian did suggest that they should just change the anthem to "We Will Rock You", because a) it's rhythmic, 2) it's sung at sports events anyway, and 3) in wartime, it would intimidate the opponent.
  2:53pm
kat330:

@Caryn: Solar flares to blame?
  2:54pm
kat330:

And I only meant your web searching prowess.
  2:54pm
Sven!:

Maamme Laulu
  2:57pm
Caryn:

@kat: Nah, my DVR is on the fritz again, and was trying to fix it. On the other hand, solar flares is so much cooler, so let's just go with that.
@Sven: hah! The funny thing is, there's occasionally debate about our anthem too, mainly because the Estonians use the same melody as their anthem. Some people think we should replace it with Sibelius' Finlandia Hymn. I'm fine either way, though the Finlandia Hymn would be less boring melodically and lyrically.
  2:58pm
?:

dope EWF edit! commercially available?
  2:59pm
Cecile:

our anthem used to be a English collegiate drinking song.
  2:59pm
G:

Vida cachorro = Dog life (Ports.)
  2:59pm
Caryn:

And just to use the web-search prowess kat credits me with: Lisa Germano was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, which is the twin city of South Bend.
  3:00pm
kat330:

Yes, it was fun -- thank YOU, Duane!
