ian curtis's mum:

evening all. call me an old nostalgic, but to me these covers all seem pretty lame and are a reminder of how great Mr Curtis was... that combination of fragility and intensity is something i wonder why anyone bothers covering? even Michael Gira... at least his album title got it right!
  4:22am
Pie:

Apop version is nice. Then again it is Apop. Even their metalica covers are butter
  4:23am
fred von helsing:

dear ian's mom, every human voice is a singular thing, and everyone wants to take their shot at recapturing something of the essence of your son's greatness
Avatar 🦇 4:25am
Julie:

As long as they bring something original to it, I found many that were too imitative of the original.
  4:25am

Bis? Hah! Well they did do the definitive version of the PowerPuff Girls theme. Fighting crime, trying to save the world!

Oooh the slow version of "Heart of Glass"--love "You Suck", followed by "You REALLY Suck"!!
  4:33am
fred von helsing:

This version is cool. Dunno how faithful it is to the orginal but it is cool.
  4:34am
Scuttle:

I agree! Fun version
  4:35am
Matt from Springfield:

@FVH One thing those AP and Bis covers brought up was that Spector-like "And Then He Kissed Me" movement towards the end; I didn't notice that in the original, will have to go back and check how that sounds.

ian curtis's mum:

indeed Matt, Joy Division were capable of walls of sound with the most rudimentary of resources. but then little Martin Hannett was a genius too. his mother was a terror, though!
  4:38am
Greg:

Just now I have realized I would like to here "Love will tear us apart" made by Big Black - in the same vein as they did Kraftwerk's "The Model".

  4:44am
fred von helsing:

(braces for goodness)
  4:45am
Matt from Springfield:

@ian's mum: Ah, he was the producer of both studio albums, and did several other post-punk albums. Another tragically young death.

"Nazi Punks FUCK OFF!, overproduced by Martin Hannett take one..."
THAT makes a lot more sense now!
  4:45am
KP:

Sorry, i'll have yto pick up answer later. It's been fun Julie. I wil check out rest of this show and last years. Marathon seems to be picking up steam. Happy Valentine's Day.

And here it comes! I can check out the production right now instead of coming back to it later! Thanks!

@Julie: Well, it's an intellectual triumph! But surely after all he's influenced in music we can devote an hour to Ian Curtis' song.

  5:46am
Caryn:

@Matt: actually, I have a full day planned for today, but just couldn't get out of bed... Subconsciously, it may have been me trying to avoid the holiday, though. Luckily, over here, we call valentine's "friends day", and you send valentine's greetings to dear friends. So less pressure on the love front (although that is coming in more and more each year - American influence).

That "Love Will Tear Us Apart" song - was that all Kaycee on a loop pedal...? Interesting...
  1:29pm
Van in DC:

Uh, I keep hearing the same song. But different. So to clarify, my previous question was regarding the *Kaycee* song (first I think) of that song... :)
  1:29pm
Van in DC:

This is almost reminding me sorta kinda of Ken's marathon playing of "The Only Song" recently...
  1:54pm

Van in DC:

Joy Division! Wow, been a long time since I've heard them.
  2:44pm
Van in DC:

Ah. So that's why I didn't recognize "Love Will Tear Us Apart"...I had only "Unknown Pleasures" and "Still" by Joy Division long ago...don't think either of those albums had that song on it.
  2:56pm
Van in DC:

Oh, so THAT is what that song is? Don't Speak? By "No Doubt"...? THAT is Gwyn Stefani? All of that information is pretty new to me. I had always assumed that was some song by Kim Wilde or something. Huh.
  2:57pm
Van in DC:

I guess it's "Gwen"...
