Familiar & forgotten gems from 50-plus years of music on the darker side, shoegaze, synthpop, goth, psychedelia, darkwave, with unapologetic detours into 70s pop. In a dark night of the soul, it's always 3 o'clock in the morning.

Trying to stay awake on one hour of sleep here, so I may be listening to much of the show unconsciously...

-it is related to English expression "hold sticks with" (="compete on equal footing with", so that if there are more than that, you are outnumbered)
-the expression was first thought up by the Dutch, but mistranslated (Dutch verb schok = hit / shake)
-the stick is a pointer used for counting, so shaking your stick at something is counting how many of it there are (derived from counting of farm animals)
-the stick is used to threaten (like Glovanie suggested above)
-the expression refers to Native American practice of counting coup, i.e. touching as many enemies as possible during a battle

The name and its various spellings spread across our family. Every woman on my father's side of the family has some derivative or version of the name as their first or middle name.

But I'm tempted to just go watch the Python "Self-defense against fresh fruit" sketch after all these mentions. Yay, Eric Idle!

"But what if he's got a pointèd stick??"
Also acceptable is "point-ed", so long as you emphasize how it's said! :)

In fact, I found something in the Grandiloquent Dictionary a long time ago, what is apparently a real word: "aichmorhabdophobia" -- fear of being attacked with a pointed stick! Someone must've made up that word from Greek after seeing that sketch!

@Caryn: Wow, high school Greek DID pay off! How long has it been since Greek was taught this side of the pond, most schools don't even require Latin anymore.

And yes, Matt from Springfield!! (First time this marathon, I guess I'll make sure to add "Matt from Springfield, Virginia" each time.

Caryn:
You could leave it as just Sprinfield and leave people guessing which Springfield you're from, like the Simpsons.
And now I need to check out that youtube vid of PIL on American Bandstand...

Marathons are good for seeing regular listeners in slots you don't normally see them in. Glenn was also here last year, and I think hamburger from London was here as well!

53 is okay, because it looks very much like a prime number. It's obvious. I once had a routine about how the title "127 Hours" is appropriately scary; 127 doesn't look like a prime number, BUT IT IS! 100 isn't a prime, 27 isn't a prime, yet 127 IS! It sneaks up on you!! :)
