Aww, kitten! Puppy! Masterful manipulation to try to get people to part with their cash!
Trying to stay awake on one hour of sleep here, so I may be listening to much of the show unconsciously...

'more than you can shake a stick at' my guess is that if you feel threaten by something you would shake a stick at it to scare it away.... if its too much of a threat shaking that stick wouldn't be enough to scare it away....

Julie:

5 minutes to get in on the Inkubus Sukkubus. Seriously, you cannot get in this in stores except for maybe London!
  4:38am
Caryn:

As for the "shake a stick at" thing, there are numerous theories:
-it is related to English expression "hold sticks with" (="compete on equal footing with", so that if there are more than that, you are outnumbered)
-the expression was first thought up by the Dutch, but mistranslated (Dutch verb schok = hit / shake)
-the stick is a pointer used for counting, so shaking your stick at something is counting how many of it there are (derived from counting of farm animals)
-the stick is used to threaten (like Glovanie suggested above)
-the expression refers to Native American practice of counting coup, i.e. touching as many enemies as possible during a battle

pointed sticks OUCH !!!!!
  4:51am
Berg:

@Julie that's right - original and new music!
  4:53am
Caryn:

I wonder if all this will lead to Julie playing a track by Pointed Sticks. Although their music is more Terre's or Keili's bag.
But I'm tempted to just go watch the Python "Self-defense against fresh fruit" sketch after all these mentions. Yay, Eric Idle!

  5:03am
fred von helsing:

wasn't there a map somewhere that WFMU's worldwide cult following could pin their locations ?
  5:03am
Caryn:

This reminds me that while I listen to PIL occasionally, I actually don't own a single record of theirs... Need to get on that at some point.
  5:03am
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Yes! :)
In fact, I found something in the Grandiloquent Dictionary a long time ago, what is apparently a real word: "aichmorhabdophobia" -- fear of being attacked with a pointed stick! Someone must've made up that word from Greek after seeing that sketch!
  5:04am
KP:

Airplane! And closing in on 50%.
  5:05am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: I've wondered before, was "Rise" by Public Image Ltd popular at the time, or does it just hold a place in your heart? It's got a familiar rhythm, and others on FMU have played PiL on occasion.

And I totally agree w/ your comment above--once you give above $500 a year to FMU, your worries magically vanish!
  5:08am
Caryn:

@Matt: ah yes, from the Greek aichm(o) for spear point and rhabd(o) for stick or wand... high school Greek pays off!
  5:08am
fred von helsing:

PiL was not a big deal at the time, was it ? Maybe the closest they came to having a hit was "World Destruction" with Afrika Bambaata ?

No matter what's going on with your life, you can know that WFMU is there. And that you helped make such a wonderful thing HAPPEN! :)
  5:10am
fred von helsing:

I read a great review (in VV I think) of a PiL gig in Manhattan. They played the entire gig behind a scrim and the audience thought they had the "right" to see the band and there was a near-riot.
  5:10am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Much obliged, thank you!
@Caryn: Wow, high school Greek DID pay off! How long has it been since Greek was taught this side of the pond, most schools don't even require Latin anymore.
  5:10am
KP:

PIL was huge for while. Maybe not like big time phony bands. But dominating the post punk scene. And they were on American Bandstand!
  5:11am
Caryn:

At least over here, all 3 PIL songs so far mentioned were played a lot at the time. Don't know their chart positions, though, as I was very young then.

FVH. That was filmed at the old ritz, i think.
  5:17am
Caryn:

@Matt: the Greek was actually a little addition to the Latin lessons. (a few lessons about ancient Greek to spice up the ancient Latin) But later, when I applied to study ancient literature at university, the Greek popped up again. Some of it is still lodged in the brain.
You could leave it as just Sprinfield and leave people guessing which Springfield you're from, like the Simpsons.
And now I need to check out that youtube vid of PIL on American Bandstand...

53 is okay, because it looks very much like a prime number. It's obvious. I once had a routine about how the title "127 Hours" is appropriately scary; 127 doesn't look like a prime number, BUT IT IS! 100 isn't a prime, 27 isn't a prime, yet 127 IS! It sneaks up on you!! :)

@Stan: I myself wish you have playlists posted, but that's the beauty of Freeform WFMU--it's all up to our DJs, no policy is going to make you do it one way or another! :)

@matt Mersenne primes are intimately tied to perfect numbers. If you get my drift *cough*

Good night and good luck!

And we're cut off! Hopefully that person who will call back will move it up to 60%!

Matt from Springfield:

Thank you Julie! Thank you Stan for holding the late night fort (today, and every week!)

Thanks Jeff M. and Martha for volunteering late (I THOUGHT that Jeff was Jeff M. who took my pledge!)

Matt from Springfield:

And thanks to all the pledgers!
We've only just begun!!!

If you listen to this show backwards, it repeatedly says "PLEDGE MONEY! PLEDGE MONEY!" :)

Catching up on archive as usual...

Wow, that Emilie Simon track had me doing a "double take" aurally speaking...quite a hint of KaTe Bush in her voice there!

Van in DC:

Dang it. I would have loved to have been in some of those prize giveaways.

Seventy-seven percent! Congrats.

Nerdkween, by the way, is Monica Arrington. And I'm certain she would LOVE to stop in WFMU and do a live set but she needs a tour van. She desperately wants to tour. Follow her on twitter @nerdkween to see how you can help her out with a simple vote every day for a short time.

This was such a wonderful installment of Dark Night of the Soul, by the way. Thanks Julie!

Wow. Julie's pledge meter went from 77% I think it was, earlier today, to like 0% right now....? Not sure what is going on with that...

I think all the meters reset, so I just now entered a goal for week two.

I had a pledging issue left over from October, and questions, which Joe thankfully helped me out with today, so now I can start helping out again.

just heard about this from other "source." Had i known this was a one-week total i would not have been rooting for 50%! Same with his show today. Still you both did very well and i think the station will be happy overall.

King Penguin, is that you? :)

Julie, I sent in my donation. NOT my pledge...my donation. I specified a handful of shows, and donated a large amount. I hope you get your share here. I'm still uncomfortable with how wfmu does this pledging. I don't think it should be tied to any particular show, but to WFMU. Just my opinion.
