Is Rinken Band from Okinawa?
  9:58am

Thanks to early '70s Sesame Street and the miracle of phonics, I only had to chew on "Minneapolitan" for a brief moment. SOUND IT OUT, the phonics teacher would say...

  10:10am

@Caryn - That answers that!
I guess I'm still in search of the great un-answerable question. Will have to resort to the old classic "Is anything ever 'in and of itself?'"

man, the NYT is all about the kohlrabi this week.
  10:21am

I have a great kohlrabi salad I make. Even people who don't like kohlrabi like it.

yeah NAING NAING !!!
  10:26am
Cecile:

basically it's a cross between cabbage, radish and turnip. Some people don't like it's bite.
I marinate it in a spicy honey vinegarette overnight, and then dress it like coleslaw the next day.
  10:27am
Cecile:

its bite. Don't want to give Ike a stroke.
  10:28am
r. THOrnton:

sounds great, Cecile. Just like this Naing Naing track! :)

chrome!
  10:29am
jt:

i like alien soundtracks so much. H (helios creed) said it sounded different because they had their gear stolen and were starting over.
  10:30am
BSI:

Speaking of which, it would appear that "broccoli rabe" is pronounced "broccoli RAHB" or some such nonsense. I maintain that "broccoli RABE" (rhyming with babe) is much more fun sounding. And therefore, makes it a healthier option at mealtimes.
  10:31am
Cecile:

BSI, whatever gets you eating cruciferous veggies!
  10:32am
jt:

i have broccoli rabies
  10:33am
BSI:

"cruciferous" now..... that's a word worth using.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am

I am a big fan of Croccoli Rabe (rhymes with Rad)
  10:34am
vegetarian rocker:

Rabe against the machine!
  10:37am
r. THOrnton:

i am completely down with BSI's RABE Revolution!
  10:37am
Cheri Pi:

I love Kohlrabi, just discovered it last year.
  10:37am
Caryn:

When my dad lived in the Netherlands, we ate kohlrabi nearly every day. It's fantastic! Yum! None of it in my small town, but I'm hoping some will eventually find its way here.
  10:38am
r. THOrnton:

Cheri, there's a bunch of kohlrabi recipes in yesterdays NYT. i want to try the kohlrabi spring rolls myself!
  10:39am
Cecile:

it's just about a perfect stir-fry veggie.
  10:39am
moose:

it makes me think of kostabi
  10:39am

This comment board needs to be happening closer to lunchtime.

.....and what the hell is a caper? One who capes?
  10:39am
Cecile:

oooh, r THO gotta check that out.
  10:40am
Cheri Pi:

Super @r. THOrnton!! I'll check it out now. I didn't know what to do with it so I just shredded it and tossed in in with other assorted veg & sesames noodles.
  10:43am
Mike East:

I have also seen the aforementioned broccoli rabe spelled "rape." good morning, folks.
  10:43am
fred von helsing:

thx!
  10:44am
Cecile:

Ha, I remember Martha Rose Shulman writing books on cakes in the 70s and 80s....
  10:44am
Deed Runlea:

good jam, keep it up
  10:46am
Leigh:

This Death Trip rawks hard! Hi, Jason!
  10:46am
Caryn:

@BSI: the name of the caper comes from its Latin scientific name (Capparis spinosa), which in turn comes from the Latin name for the plant, capparis, which in turn comes from the Greek κάππαρις. The Greek word may be derived from Asian languages, or come from the name of Cyprus, which is a big caper producer.
  10:49am
r. THOrnton:

wow Caryn! WFMU chat - a source of infinite knowledge! now as for wisdom, that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish :)
  10:49am
BSI:

Hm..... well it must not be as healthy as broccoli RAYB, as it's not nearly as much fun to say aloud.
  10:51am
glenn:

I HATE CAPERS. i really do.
  10:53am
paula pc:

to paraphrase a friend of mine - Colin Stetson is like Joe Preston; your band is always better with him playing in it
  10:54am
Caryn:

@glenn: I'm with you. Capers and olives are not welcome in this home.
  10:55am
glenn:

ahhh, here we diverge. olives are a thing of beauty.
  10:55am
Cecile:

they are my best friends.
  10:56am
Cheri Pi:

I'm in the pro caper, pro olive camp myself.
  10:57am
BSI:

I cannot form emotional bonds with green peppers. But roasted reds, though, are awesome. This should not be confused as vegetable racism.
  10:59am
Deed Runlea:

that Street Musicians of Yogyakarta LP/EP is amazing, i just picked it up at coop 87 this weekend and it hasn't left my turntable. i am happy to see its in the FMU bins
  10:59am
Brett:

Whoa these street musicians are awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am

totally Deed! There's a "Street Musicof Java" release on Original Music from 1990 that has some of the same songs but different performers/recordings and is also really good, worth tracking down
  11:02am
Nathan:

Any food is welcome in my home.. I make an effort to not hurt any particular foods feelings by being left out off my menu. They all have their individual merits.
  11:02am
William:

Just wanted to chime in and say how much I appreciate being entertained at work by the show. Thanks a lot.
  11:03am
Deed Runlea:

thanks for the tip
  11:04am
Cheri Pi:

I was listening to Fabio a few months ago and his guest was talking about a German vegetable soup with brussel sprouts, mushrooms etc. I made it that weekend and it was fantastic. like a beetless borscht almost.
  11:06am
glenn:

smoked paprika is my latest spice of choice.
  11:07am
seang:

I read on this comment board that DCE's workplace has blocked FMU and that's why he's not showing up here
  11:09am
Cecile:

I heard that, too, seang. That is a bummer.

This Yva is great!
  11:09am
BSI:

That's a serious breach of human rights, @seang. We need Amnesty International to airlift our Dead Corporate Eyes outta that office. No joke.
  11:10am
Cecile:

Either that, or urge him to buy an iPhone or Android.
  11:11am
joe:

'ello folks
  11:12am
Cheri Pi:

@Glenn-I'm doing smoked paprika too, it's so good in soups. I bought it by accident-it will now be a staple.
  11:12am
Nathan:

@Cecile Yeah. Stick it to the man.

@Cheri Pi Have you tried smoked salts?
  11:13am
Mike East:

I've been using a lot of cumin this winter which has been the winter of lentil soup for the East family.
  11:14am
joe:

One of my favorite things in the world is when Jason plays something so cool and I look at the play list and see that it comes from the FMA (i.e. Vialka)
  11:18am
Cecile:

Nathan, PBI, I have and they are great. Someon gave me some Hawaiian pink salt and that was great.
  11:19am
Cecile:

I am subbing smoked paprika for those friends of mine who can't eat spicy food any more, but miss that chipotle pepper kind of smoky taste
  11:21am
osvi:

Jason, congratulations on a wonderful marathon! Thank you guys for all you do! WFMU destroys...
  11:21am
joe:

Cecile, Nathan and Cheri slow down I'm trying to write all these down. I need new things to try :)
  11:22am
r. THOrnton:

if anyone wants to get their FMU on but is blocked by The Man, i suggest looking at Clearwire's wireless 4G Internet service. since the signal strength varies drastically depending on location, it is definitely not for everyone, but i am using it right now in the Balt. area and its great.
  11:25am
r. THOrnton:

for the record, i am a Clearwire user and not a marketdroid of any sort.
  11:25am

Aw yeah this rap from Bas-Canada is awesome!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am

loved it !!! they speak french, but i can't understand a word of what they're saying…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am

dang, really Pierre? I was hoping to find out what they're saying. I like their writing on Bas Canada and Postrigodon....
  11:39am
Cheri Pi:

Get them on the show Jason!
  11:44am
pierre:

well i do understand some words but they speak pretty fast, with a strong accent. But i've downloaded two albums, i'll give it some other tries
  11:48am
Cheri Pi:

To honor the life of CanCon advocate Pierre Juneau, the Alaclair Ensemble should mos def come to NJ.
  11:48am
William:

The audio interview snippets of trash metal fans - are they from some sort of documentary? Do they belong in the tracks or are they threwn across the audio material by the radio host? Simply great listening to thrash metal fans talking.
