Favoriting April 11, 2012: Remembering Richie Teeter, with special guest Andy Shernoff

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

photo by Lynn Goldsmith, from the Bloodbrothers photo shoot
The Dictators are among a handful of bands that I discovered during my high-school years in the mid-'70s (thanks to my influential friend Jim McIntyre) and have remained an avid fan of to this day. I was still a little too young to have been aware of Go Girl Crazy when it came out, so the first album of theirs I heard was Manifest Destiny. I was hooked instantly by everything from the anthemic "Science Gone Too Far" to the (relatively) softer sounds of "Hey Boys" and the wistful "Sleepin' With The TV On."

The lead singer on those last two songs, and the drummer on that whole album (and its even harder-rocking follow-up Bloodbrothers), was Richie Teeter. He passed away this past Tuesday at the age of 61. Hearing this news was like hearing that I'd lost an old friend that I'd grown up with... I was absolutely crushed. From getting into them in high school to moving to their hometown of NYC for college to the love I still have for their music, The Dictators are one of the bands that I've felt closest to for most of my music-loving life.

I happened to meet Rich completely by chance several years ago, when I went into the Sam Ash drum shop on 48th Street maybe six or seven years ago. I noticed him behind the counter, and saw that his nametag read "Rich Teeter." I was dumbfounded. I asked if he was "THE Rich Teeter," and he laughed and said he guessed he was; this of course prompted an outpouring of assorted inane fanboy comments from yours truly. He then good-naturedly insisted that I inform the kids in the store who worked for him that yes, he was indeed famous! I was only too happy to oblige.

A couple of years ago I bumped into him again, this time at a pizza place in Penn Station. I tried to buy him a slice, and he politely (but firmly) declined. In both of these brief meetings he struck me as a super nice and humble guy, and that sense has been borne out by several remembrances posted by his bandmates Handsome Dick Manitoba, Scott "Top Ten" Kempner, and my guest on this program, Andy Shernoff as well as by longtime fans. When I learned of his passing I knew that I had to pay tribute to his impact on my life musically; I hope you'll enjoy hearing some of his work on this edition of The Evan "Funk" Davies show.

  9:53pm
Van in DC:

Am I the only one who absolutely fears asking any FMU DJ for a request? I feel like I need to listen to each DJ's show for another, I don't know, 5 years or so in order to allow myself to request that. HA!
  9:54pm
Danne D:

The playoffs start FRIDAY, Destroit. I'll pretend I did not read your last comment. http://www.nhl.com/ice/series.htm?season=20112012&series=c

Danne D:

I'll never forget who we beat for our first Cup :D
  9:55pm
Barkevious Shabazz.:

Who wants to request when they know they shit cold?
  9:55pm
Danne D:

You can make requests, the DJ can say no with impunity that's all :)
  9:55pm
Sybil:

@Van, fear not! They'll either do it or not, but anyway, feedback is feedback (aka no bad publicity0
  9:56pm
G:

@Van: My guess is that often they come in with four or more hours of possible tunes to play and three hours of time available, so the last thing they really need is more stress about what to choose... :-)
  9:57pm
Holly in NC:

Van, I'm totally not scared to ask, but I also realize that due to each dj's vision for his/her show my request will likely not be honored. And that is totally OK. And it never hurts to try!
  9:59pm
Barkevious Shabazz.:

My kingdom for a "Douchemaster " satin jacket. Sigh.
  10:00pm
Van in DC:

My fear is not so much from the DJs but from the other listeners.

Of course, I would be constantly requesting Kate Bush, so there is that consideration... ;)
  10:00pm
Destroit:

Perfectly put Holly, holy crap Mary wing party should be destroying any capability I had at work ....tomorrow.
  10:01pm
Sybil:

Eh, Van, go for it!

Danne D:

So how long does claritin take to work?
  10:04pm

  10:05pm
Sybil:

Yah Van!

@Van - EFD is a master segue artist, I think he could something great with Ms. Kate! But...not tonight, this tribute is well planned.

Hi Sybil!
Danne, I'm so sorry you still feel so poorly.

Holly, efd has never played Kate. According to the "all artists played by efd" linkie :)

Sybil:

Holly and Danne ... and all you guys...

See you next week! Sadly sinking into the sunset...

Va, try not to make too much hay of EFD's "virgin Bush" status.
  10:14pm
Amanda:

Best Dictators song.
  10:14pm
john:

Thanks, Sybil! But after the last couple days, the chant's about to become "Let's Go Home..."
  10:15pm
Barkevious Shabazz.:

Speaking of Science gone too Far, have you seen Big Ang on Mobwives?
  10:16pm
Holly in NC:

@Van - Never has doesn't necessarily mean "won't"

@G - Virgin Bush heh heh heh (Beavis & Butthead)
  10:16pm
Frank:

Sad news about Richie Teeter. I remember seeing them at Winterland with the Ramones and Widowmaker (remember them??). Ticket price? Five bucks...
  10:16pm
Danne D:

g'night Sybil!
  10:17pm
Van in DC:

Oh I don't really G. Just saying, not preaching on it lol. There is SO MUCH out there it is impossible for all of us to really know what the best stuff is. Luckily, I discovered Kate, myself. Others like Evan, Amanda, Julie, Irene, and most especially Doug, as well as a host of other FMU DJs, clue me in to others I should know of. :)
  10:18pm
Danne D:

Usually my requests are ideas for premiums or Hoof N Mouth songs. Haven't succeeded there either ;)

SteveL:

Awesome, and well introduced.
  10:32pm
Van in DC:

@Holly 10:16 yes, but. And this was really stressed to me by another FMU DJ...don't ever pressure any given DJ to play a certain Artist that they don't, well, like. It's freeform for a reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
efd:

someone please reassure me that I successfully dumped the f-word during that interview.
  10:37pm

An efd miscue is about as rare as anyone at WFMU outside of Julie playing Toyah. Just never happens. Yes you did efd.
  10:37pm
12539:

Didn't hear a thing here.
  10:37pm
Danne D:

Well the more someone fits a DJ's show - the better chance they might play the request. I can probably count on 1 hand the number of requests I've ever made though. I usually don't tell museums where should hang the paintings either :D

One exception to the request rule (or at least suggestion rule) of course is Underwater Theme Park - Meghan seeks suggestions that fit the upcoming theme :)
  10:38pm
Danne D:

Almost put the 'ef in EFD ;)
  10:39pm

Evan you are clear. If the F-bomb had crossed my ears I would have known immediately and probably immediately not only killed my connection, but called Ken the Station Manager, Liz, AND the EPA, FDA, FCPA, RIAA, WWE, and every other organization on the entire planet to complain.

Ha. ;)

FCC:

Fucking shit, foiled again.
  10:45pm
SteveL:

Alright! Love this riff. (Just a touch of Alice Cooper's Dead Babies, which is always nice.)
  10:45pm
Danne D:

A good start is asking DJs how they feel about requests :)

I love the interaction of the comments boards (obviously) but still like that there are a handful of shows that don't employ them, giving them a more old-school feel.
  10:45pm
Van in DC:

@FCC - ha! "FORGET YOU MY FRIEND!" LOL
  10:46pm
Holly in NC:

Just got this message from Brother JT, if anyone's interested:

Dear friends,
My apologies for the intrusion, but I just wanted to let you know there is a new Brother JT album available.
It's called "THE SVELTENESS OF BOOGIETUDE". I don't know what that means.
If you're interested you can stream songs or get mp3's at:
http://brotherjt.bandcamp.com/
Or go to www.brotherjt.com if you prefer the usual handmade CD-R's. There is also a link there to get the album for free as a zipfile, for the more technically inclined.
And, in closing, just put together this video for the song "Brother JT": hope a chuckle or titter may be induced...

Flyers came back from a 3-0 deficit and beat the Penguins in OT. That series has instant classic written all over it.
  10:47pm
SteveL:

Danne D: Ditto on the boards and lack thereof. I love Dave the Spazz and Teenage Wasteland, because I just HAVE TO LISTEN instead of getting geeky (which I also love)
  10:48pm
miss cheri:

evan & danne i know i'm a woman but i just might check out the three stooges movie this weekend, btw are you two going to see it also?
  10:49pm
Ancient Times:

3 dollars at the door, not 2!!!!
  10:49pm
Van in DC:

That had a great beat and, no, wait, it didn't at all. Never mind.
  10:49pm
Mike East:

I'm with you, Danne D. Glen Jones is probably my favorite DJ of all time and he has no playlist. WFMU has it all!
  10:49pm
SteveL:

Three bucks? Forget it!!
  10:49pm
Ancient Times:

@miss cheri: Why you, I oughtaaaaa....
  10:50pm
Danne D:

@Holly that's awesome :) My friend's band Elk City has done stuff with Brother JT.
  10:50pm
Danne D:

@Ancient Times - gotta make up for those $1 tickets I guess.
  10:51pm
Danne D:

YEAH!
  10:51pm
Amanda:

Other best Dictators song.
  10:52pm
miss cheri:

sorry to trouble you guys,,efd & danne

cheri, I am not going to see the three stooges movie this weekend, even though I know I'm not a woman.

Amanda, the number of best Dictators songs is very close to the number of Dictators songs IMHO.
  10:56pm
Mike East:

I had a song with the chorus, "We're the Dictators of Rock & Roll" People always asked if it was a tribute to the Dictators, which it wasn't, but they asked often enough, that I just told them it was.
  10:56pm
G:

I *know* a woman? Does that count?
  10:58pm
Destroit:

I was totally keeping tabs on that Danne, as I watch the wings fail. Gonna be a classic indeed. Thanks efd, and all people for making this a fun/board listening/reading experience. Group hug you fucks.
  10:58pm
Andrea True:

Tributes bum me out. Got any coke?
  11:00pm
Van in DC:

It amazes me still how much I know of music that I don't see on WFMU. What's more amazing is how much I am still learning from WFMU, how much I don't know / never knew. Humbling. And consternating. All at the same time.
  11:00pm
Destroit:

Love Andrea True already,
  11:14pm
john:

other other other best taters song. Like all the rest.
  11:15pm
G:

@Anrea True Dat: Things go better with coke, I heard somewhere.
  11:15pm
Thierry:

All around very melancholic. Is it because of today's sad news, or because we sailed so far away from this great early NY punk scene?
  11:16pm
Danne D:

so 37 minutes ago the Rockies-Giants game was 9-7 in the 4th inning.

It is now 13-7 in the 5th inning. Gonna be a long night in Denver.
  11:17pm
Danne D:

I think EFD needs to have Adam Warrock create a Ticket Salad Sandwich Time theme. I think that's your solution.
  11:18pm
G:

Hair bands drove punk out of the public eye. Duh!
  11:18pm
G:

@Danne: Not exactly an easy assignment, there.
  11:19pm
Baseballs:

The air is so t-h-i-i-i-n in Denver. WHEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
  11:20pm
miss cheri:

so danne,,are you going to check out that new "three stooges" flick?
  11:20pm
Baseballs:

speaking of nutty
  11:21pm
Danne D:

That's why you bring in a heavy hitter like Warrock.

@cheri I think some stuff should be left alone. The Stooges falls into that category.
  11:22pm
Baseballs:

Denver: 42 minutes of actual playing time. 23 minutes of breaks for commericals between innings. 79 minutes of pitching changes.
  11:24pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

"a q+ a with former members of Hole. " We dare you to be interested!
  11:24pm
G:

@Danne: But here's the question that Adam W. really needs to ask himself: Does he want the title "Ticket Salad Sandwich Theme" in his discography?
  11:27pm
Danne D:

16-7 after 5 innings. Rockies have scored in every inning.
  11:27pm
Danne D:

@G He does if it's billed "Evan Funk Davies' Ticket Salad Sandwich Time"
  11:29pm
G:

up to him and EFD, then. Perhaps EFD has compromising photos from Adam's in-studio visit, or something...
  11:29pm
dave:

in some alternate universe where everything is perfect forever, somone releases a split single of "oscillation" and fugazi's "arpeggiator"
  11:30pm
miss cheri:

well evan & danne i really hate to split while the partys still going but i got to get up early,, night danne & evan the king of funk!!!
  11:30pm
G:

@dave: or maybe an EP with a cover of "devastator"
  11:31pm
Danne D:

night cheri
  11:35pm
ADL:

Wow, this Golden Boys is great. Different sound, but has a similar vibe to another Austin band, Golden Bear.
  11:36pm
Danne D:

all non-pitchers that have been in the game have at least 1 hit. All but Scutaro have at least 2 (including a pinch-hitter that went 2 for 2)
  11:36pm
glenn:

it's pretty rare for a team to score a run in every inning. 7 times in the n.l., never in the a.l.. colorado was the last team to do it, in 1999.
  11:37pm
Danne D:

@glenn wow, knew it was rare but never knew it never happened in the A.L. funny when you consider they have the DH.

Colorado has a guy on 2nd, one out, to try and keep it going.
  11:38pm
Mike East:

I'm digging this new dr. john
  11:39pm
Danne D:

me too, Mike!
  11:39pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Sounds like they simultaneously lifted the backing vocals from she's a rainbow and time of the season.
  11:40pm
Danne D:

I jinxed it. End of 6, still 16-7

Crazy baseball tonight!

I have to dig into those archives of yours, Kenzo!

Thanks for your usual excellence, Evan. Fantastic Richie Teeter tribute and interview with Andy Shernoff (he has great taste in DJs)

Take care everyone!
