In an era of bigger, faster, and stronger, the slow-moving but evasive knuckleball remains an anomaly in Major League Baseball. The new documentary Knuckleball! from directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (who also directed the acclaimed documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work) explores one of the game's biggest mysteries, and the lives of the few men who have made a living throwing it. The fascinating story is told through copious archival footage and interviews with knuckleballers past and present, including Phil Niekro, Jim Bouton, Charlie Hough, current Mets star R.A. Dickey, and Tim Wakefield, who retired earlier this year after winning two World Championships with the Boston Red Sox.

Wakefield, along with directors Stern and Sundberg, join Evan "Funk" Davies tonight to discuss the documentary, which has its world premiere outdoors this coming Saturday night as part of the Tribeca Drive-In series at the World Financial Center. (Get there early for knuckleball pitching clinics with R.A. Dickey, Tim Wakefield and Jim Bouton!) Visit TribecaFilm.com for more info on Knuckleball!, and don't miss this special even-more-baseball-than-usual edition of The Evan "Funk" Davies Show!

I meant that for Resentful Pooch, of course, but there's no reason it shouldn't obtain for the rest of you.
  9:20pm
Resentful Pooch:

That's YOUR JOB :-)
  9:20pm
Danne D:

SSD ever had a baseball player? - I mean they had the uni watch guy so that's kinda close
  9:21pm
Danne D:

So EFD, you have to figure Aharon will probably be picking up Tim Wakefield in the EFDHHDYDTY Fantasy Baseball League tonight, right?
  9:22pm
john:

Shhhh, I'm trying to trade him Charlie Hough.
  9:23pm
Danne D:

miss cheri:

hi there evan--what's cooking? i'm sorry i missed you last week,, i was on vacay.
  9:37pm
keving:

Only caught you giving the title of the song and initially thought you were talking about the MGMT song about the TVPs. Never gave that band a thought, but turned the stereo up since you were apparently playing them, and thought, 'Wow, this band is actually way better than I thought!" Guess I'll continue to stick with my instincts.

second time i randomly tune info fmu today and second time i hear a song ive liked before and didnt know what it was! red mass!! thanks you efd!!

Danne D:

ooh bases loaded Double for Napoli - 2 runs score :)
  9:40pm
miss cheri:

evan & danne just off the cuff--what's your all time fave movie??
  9:40pm
Danne D:

My catchers have accounted for 10 of my team's 14 HR, 31 of my team's 67 RBI and even 2 of my team's 20 stolen bases :) Maybe this 4-catcher strategy isn't all bad.
  9:43pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

@miss Cheri. Did you see The Three Stooges while on vacay?
  9:45pm
Just Guessing:

@BS: She Went Daily, and twice when there were matinees.
  9:45pm
miss cheri:

yes i did,,i loved it!!
  9:46pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Top notch.

Cute girls universally love The Three Stooges so much that even pointless remakes elicit aroused raves from them.

Andrew Waterloo:

Been awhile since I've been to the cinema outside of entertaining an 8 year-old
  9:47pm
john:

Slumberland is on a roll this year. More than usually, I mean. Terry Malts, Allo Darlin', Veronica Falls, Violens, Evans The Death, all brilliant!
  9:47pm
miss cheri:

larry david is also in it,
  9:48pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I wonder if I should shave my head and go to the three stooges looking curly like
  9:48pm
Danne D:

@Pop Culture Expert - this is not my experience

Be cool if we hear some Baseball Project tonight. If EFD has his trigger finger on the bleep button he can do that Ted Williams song :)
  9:58pm
G:

Well, FMU already has two accidental F words for the day :-) (see SSD, 6:27-28)
  10:00pm
Danne D:

@G we don't talk about such things :)
  10:00pm
Danne D:

I believe they were actually just referring to our Beloved EFD by his nickname.
  10:01pm
G:

They haven't put the archive up yet. Gotta launder it first. And consult with counsel. :-)
  10:01pm
Mike East:

For many reasons, I hope the FCC does not read the comments
  10:02pm
G:

Wouldn't surpise me if they get taken down, Mike. :-)
  10:02pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Old Chills. Tops.
  10:04pm
Danne D:

@Mike East and G: Evan is publicity shy so that's probably why they might take that stuff out.
  10:06pm
john:

Danne, At the Met last week, Baseball Project censored that song in deference to the location, apparently because nobody has ever sworn at a museum before. And you're lucky I was out all day and didn't have a chance to put Justin Morneau in my lineup tonight!
  10:08pm
keving:

Never actually heard any early Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers before. Will now definitely have to look into this.

Hi Evan! Hi everyone!

First time commenting here (as myself anyway...) proud to say that I've been listening along the whole time--with a new iPad and the WFMU App I can listen while taking a late night and cleaning up!

Hey Danne! :)
Late night *dinner* I meant. Evan's show is like the Studio 54 of FMU--everyone's here! While I don't comment on every show I have playing, I might as well start here, since I now leave some comments with Mary Wing right after :)

miss cheri:

evan tell me something,, do you think i should quit commenting on your show?
  10:22pm
G:

Yes, and one online source gives March 6th as the release date, Matt. I'm not sure what the south is -- maybe (a joke about???) southern New Zealand????
  10:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Evan: Already have the "In Love With These Times" and "Pink Flying Saucers Over The Southern Alps", so I was ecstatic when I first heard that comp came out!
  10:23pm
Danne D:

Yay :) Baseball Project :)
  10:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: Not only the very Southern Hemisphere, but probably refs the very south of NZ itself. Some called the Flying Nun style "the Dunedin Sound". (Done-Eden sound, at least that's how Kiwis say that).

  10:33pm
Danne D:

Only thing about as rare as the knuckler is the screwball
  10:34pm
Danne D:

Probably my favorite All Star Game moment was watching Charlie Hough throw to some poor catcher who had never caught the knuckleball before. Like 3 of 'em went to the backstop I think.
  10:34pm
Danne D:

Hough just stood there laughing on the mound.
  10:35pm

  10:36pm

@Danne: Is the "screwball" an actual baseball pitch?
Not just a name for a "cut-up" person?
  10:36pm
Danne D:

I heard on the radio (I think it was an interview with Dickey) apparently there are a couple kids in the minors that use a knuckleball.

That's a great inspiration, Danne! A truly heroic underdog.
And an epic performance by Bill Mac! That arrangement was kind of Pogues style--is that how Killdozer played it?

I wish. That would be @motorco - they led they way in reclaiming a totally abandoned, sad & kinda scary 3 blocks of downtown Durham, a little corner which is now, according to recent visitor Carrie Brownstein more Portland than Portland. I dunno about that, but it's friendly & welcoming & vibrant & very, very Durham, warts & all. Right next to the old aka *real* Durham Bulls ballpark.

@everyone - y'know how most folks have names that mean "wise, gallant, fair-haired first child who will lead the world", or something to that effect? 'Holly' means "prickly shrub". That really bothered me when I was little.

Both sexes have prickly shrubs, and that's a fact

Matt from Springfield:

I'm wondering just how Holly became a female name--the old carol "The Holly and The Ivy" originates in pagan traditions of celebrating the winter solstice. Apparently this symbolized the sexuality between man and woman. (The ivy is broad and it spreads, and the holly pricks! Get it?)

@SteveL, White Hills live set was 2 weeks ago, and it smoked! Just listened to it the other day myself.

@anatomist - Recently a lot pop-blogs have posited that female pubic hair is going the way of the dodo.

Small World Alert:

In the under 40 set, yes, north of that it's a dice throw.

Forrest:

My momma said pubic hair is like a box of chocolates -- you never know what you're gonna get.
  11:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Don't think of it that way. If you can't avoid thinking of it that way...you listen to Irwin's show? There's a terrific and feminine singer called "Ivy" he plays... ;)

Holly in NC:

@smallworld Erm.. Let's just say if someone wants me to look like a prepubescent, they are sh*t out if luck, in all ways.

Obviously no one should need to pick their teeth, either...
  11:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Also...what??! Save the, um, "dodo"!!!
But only *certain* kinds of "dodo"...
  11:48pm
Forrest:

Holly almost mistyped "the way of the dildo", but caught herself before hitting send :-P

Put 30 or 60 minutes of Spongey on autorepeat. They will not notice or care that it repaets over and over.

A veteran desk guy in office some years ago arranged to get a tour of Fenway for he and his son. They came upon Wakefield throwing in cage somewhere. He immediately came over to the boy, talked to him, showed him how he threw, signed a ball. Ray, who also worked as a reporter as inside guys did in those days, said it was the most touching thing he had experienced in all his years in the biz and he had a few. Not too much time after that he died suddenly, shocking us all. His son was still very young. I think of Ray, a huge Yankee fan, every time I hear Wakefield's name.
